  • I'll probably get canned for my recommendation, but an 2005/08 VW Golf diesel…. The Diesel (1.9L or the 2.0 TDi depending on model) will go a long way. Yes! It runs on the worst of the Dinosaur fuels, and yes! Diesel is often at a premium cost, but hear me out.. They get apprx 900k a tank (around 5.7l/100k), the DSG is the serviceable type, and not too bad if serviced regularly (reliability wise), not the fastest auto shifter, but adequate. Plenty around under $5k on Marketplace, some good examples, and also plenty of rubbish clapped out heaps too - YMMV.

There's loads of parts for these, from pick a part place like Jolly's U Pull it in Vic to Fleabay, Rockauto in the US carries plenty of bits too far cheaper then Oz, they are a dime a dozen. Not without peril as a suggested used car of course and not the prettiest either (you'll warm to the headlight shape, I promise) but a fairly easy to maintain car, rego isnt too bad and neither is insurance. 55L tank would be about $100 a fill in current prices (Source Petrol Spy, lowest is $1.76 near me ATM) and @5.7L/100k is almost 960k.. Water pump and timing belt/tensioners essential items on this one, and should have been done prior to purchase.

Should have ABS, ESP, Airbags (front and passenger at a min, but last year of the shape will likely have side airbags as well). Possibly traction control (Maybe limited to the GTD - diesel GTi version).. but overall not a bad bus.

The 2006/2008 era of either VW or Audi in general arent all that bad imo. I put my daughter in a 2005 A3 2.0L Non turbo non DSG and it's brilliant.. sips petrol, smooth and comfortable and built far better than the 2010 Mk6 Golf wagon I had. Parts are easy to obtain if you ask around and mechanics dont mind them as theyre still easy enough to diagnose with OBDII equipment/scanners.

Plug and play reverse camera and android auto/Apple car play can be installed pretty easy with the saving outta $10k.

The Diesels doesnt mind a tune later down the track either.. (but thats another story).

    • Yep, diesel golf's are grear. Jetta is the same but stupid and ugly, also cheaper. Passat the same but a bit bigger.

    • Does the golf have DPF issues in stop start driving like Polo?

      • +1

I can't be 100% sure but I think pre - 2009 models had no DPF. Mk6 Golf's do have one.

  • You can't hit up BOM&D for some more money and insurance? The less you worry about car breaking down or smashing the more you can focus on working and whatever it is young people do these days, making your TikTok videos and such.

The way the OP writes, as well as the way they use the dollar sign when listing prices, makes me think they're an immigrant new to driving rather than a 16/17 year old driver.

      • Well Giriram is an Indian name, so that might make sense…

        • +1

Did you mean Giri (space) Ram? 😀
Yes, very good observation. Could be no space too!

          • @lordra: Yes , I am - u guys are serious Tech savvy people for no doubt….

      • Interesting way of thinking mate, @kerfuffle - What about nerds/geeks/ocd peeps who have to follow their symbols?

        • +1

Those people would put dollar signs at the front, as per Australian standards.

          • @kerfuffle: I didn't notice that OP's post was revised to include the $ sign in the front.
So $ was completely omitted in the first post. Very attentive @kerfuffle ! 😀

    • Potentially International student- could see if their uni has short loan to top up for a slightly better car? Especially if they have placements or similar you could argue for it.

      • The reason i am going for low budget is - I know - i might make mistakes , so do not want to risk on bigger investment cars ….
But will look at loan options - Thanks for that

Perhaps a controversial view though you could buy something with minor hail damage. This is based on still being able to get a reliable beer vehicle, you'll probably put some dings in it anyway and don't plan on selling it for much/ anything when looking to upgrade.

Or learn how to drive a manual.

    • Yeah - just purely for learning purpose

  • You should be able to get a decent Honda Civic for that price but it will be a few years older than what you want.

    • Noted - Honda Civic ….

  • +3

Any specific reason for 2013+ ? Honda jazz is a great small car with superb visibility. You can always get an android head unit with reverse camera installed, even if the original car does not come with one

    • +1

Great recommendation. Jazz's are just as reliable as their toyota equivalent and probably easier to find cheaper too.

    • Reason for 2013- car not older than 10 years ….
Honda Jazz is a nice option - Will note for sure ….
Android kit with reverse camera is an option for sure —— if I do not get a car with reverse camera - I will choose this for sure..
      Thanks

      • +2

Just so you know, you can't use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay while on your P-Plates either as that counts as using your phone.

        • ok … Noted - Will keep in mind .,.

With your budget, youre going to have to just see what's available.

Avoid euro cars, they're hard work.

Service history is more important than low kms - a high km car that's been well looked after is better than a low km car that's been neglected. And the high km cars come at a lower price.

Make sure you get a pre purchase inspection done, they'll highlight any red flags as well as Identify minor faults you can use as bargaining chips.

    • Service NSW recently started giving Odometer history - When finalizing a car - I will get this report too
      Thanks

Make sure you get a mechanical inspection b4 handing over your hard earned cash.

  • +3

OP be aware due to covid BS and market forces and manu/dealer manipulation etc that car segment is full of old trashed cars. You will be paying a premium to buy a car that will need expensive repairs short term, UNLESS YOU ARE SUPER LUCKY. You could learn about inspecting cars, and then go inspect LOTS LOTS LOTS of cars to find the needle in the haystack.

Rule 1. Cardio Everything the seller tells you is a LIE until proven otherwise.

    • +1

      Wish me luck — 🤞

  • +1

By the time you add insurance etc, you’re probably looking at an $8000 car with all your requirements. Good luck.

  • +1

    Youre welcome!

Spoiler alert - it doesnt look good
I got 1 result using your requirements + max odo at a huge 100k kms and there is no setting for reliable so alls you get was a Jeep!

Either up the odo even further or Up your budget

Japanese or Korean car make sure it has service records.

tip from a frugalista - the most expensive part of a used car is shiny new paint

'buy the cheapest car your ego can afford'

if your ego needs a shiny new expensive car, spending money you don't have to get something you don't need, to impress people you don't like, then that's your cost - if you don't need that, then I once bought a dinged up VW Kombi van in Europe with crappy paint but a brand newly renovated engine - which ran perfectly for a year in Europe and gave me no problems - and it cost me $500

I was offered a beautiful 2010? Honda Accord for $6K a couple of years ago with maybe 60K on the odo - it had a little tiny ding in the front hood, and a couple of small scratches along the side - I didn't grab it - wasn't in the right mindset at the time - and it sold the next day to a keen buyer for a higher price than he offered it to me. So time and place changes everything.

    • Sure - Thanks for ur experience - I am not looking to satisfy my ego , rather trying to serve the purpose of my learning & household works… Hope I find a good one
      Thanks

  • Who has been supervising your driving?

    • Prompt driving tutor ..

there are 10 Japanese motor vehicle manufacturers. Just pick one of them.

actually, don't Hino only make trucks. so not that one.

  • Hyundai i30 GD

  • Op you could also get an older low mileage car. There are some cars (such as Corollas) that can get a reverse camera installed for fairly cheap.
A Honda Jazz or Toyota Corolla will last 30 years (they can potentially both do around 500.0000 kms) if they are well look after (so if you picked up at 2010 low mileage well looked after it would last you another 17 years if you look after it).

  • Go with a toyota, cant go wrong :) Corolla / Yaris etc…

  • +1

I highly recommend you drop the age limit OP, and focus on finding a Japanese or Korean car that has been garaged and maintained, even if it is 15 years old +.

Consider who is selling the car, the ideal scenario would be a older couple that are upgrading their car just because they had it a long time.

What you don't want is a holden cruze or 4cyl euro with 180,000km, multiple previous owners, and poor maintenance.

Negotiate 1k less with the stock wheels instead of the “special ones” . Just make sure the tyres are good

  • Honda Jazz

    super reliable
if no camera, can add android head unit for 500 and a camera for 20 (friend to help) .did that with my 2010 jazz

the Vtech engines just last and tonnes of space

Everyone here is going to suggest a used Toyota. But the used car market is absolutely astronomically overpriced for old Toyotas at the moment. I would seriously consider buying a new MG3 or a Kia Picanto. Yes it is more expensive but you get a brand new car which will be far more reliable and safer than a 20 year old Camry that people will recommend you buy. The servicing will be capped price and you’ll feel much more confident going on long road trips not worrying about it breaking down. As someone who’s been looking at buying a car for 6 months the cost of insurance (full comprehensive) was actually cheaper for me buying a brand new Kia Picanto than for a 20 year old Camry, and the Camry had an agreed on value of $10,000 less than the picanto.

  • How long do you think you gonna posses that car?
Cameras are Add-ons , so don't worry about that. Main thing is how long do you want to keep that car?
If just until you get used to driving - probably around 1 and half years - go for cheaper ones. Toyota YARIS and MAZDA 2 are the best in my opinion - Small Hatch Back, reliable. For lower budget, Suzuki Alto and Nissan Micra are not too bad

If you are thinking longterm, don't worry thinking you are on L or P1. All cars are similar, unless you drive 7 seater or Utes. They have camera and sensors, parking assistance, and unless you go in busy city on weekends, parking won't be a nightmare if you have cameras, it's just a fear. Only thing is drive slow and safely .

P.S: Don't go for long sized car like Camry or Aurion. In my experience if you drive expensive or big cars, you'll learn SAFE DRIVING than when you drive cheaper and easy cars. You'll be careless. 😂

  • We've been driving a small hatch (Nissan Micra) and is fairly cheap in maintenance. I would think any small hatch would be the same. Also good when hauling stuff around like moving because the back seat goes down and the back fully opens up so the whole back seat is accessible for moving small furniture and boxes.

  • Hyundai Accent hatch

  • Mitsubishi Mirage, very underrated car. It’s small, economical and reliable.

You can buy a complete swapable head unit with reversing camera for around $400 (AliExpress). It’s an easy DIY. This will give you Apple CarPlay, Android auto and those features.

You can buy a dashcam for around $130 a129. It’s a DIY, all it needs a micro sd card.

If you are a learner, get car insured under your parents name with AAMI. They cover learner permits children. and for a car less than $10k, just go with 3rd party fire and theft. Will cost you under $400.

  • As suggest here, Corolla or Yaris. The aftermarket for these cars is huge and cheap. You can get a camera easily installed on these cars along with Android Auto in the Din.

  • you won't get anything in 10k …. in sedan, automatic with less than 80,000km on clock … !

  • Out of warranty 2019 Tesla Model 3 in a year or two :)

  • Is it possible to find one at this price point with AEB?

  • Don't get them a car with reverse camera then they will never learn.

  • 10 gees for a first car. The world's gone insane. Spend half that. You'll probably bump a few things, make a few rough gear changes, go over a few speed bumps too quickly while learning.

    • +2

You're living in the past. My first car looked awful - mottled excrement spary job brown manual Datsun 180B - but was fairly reliable and cost $500 - a tenth of your recommended price - perhaps a third factoring in inflation - in the early 90s. My next car wasn't too much more and was a manual '78 Mazda 626 - loved that car but it kept blowing it's head gasket and had to go (and no I never let it run out of coolant). The days of cars that cheap are long gone, and they don't look to be coming back.

      • Surely you can still pick up a mid-2000s small car for $5k.

But I agree. The trend seems to be strongly upward. The number of adverts on Carsales for $15k ads "great for a first car" is sickening.

  • +1

Hey so, down-vote away but I have notes:
Can you improve your attitude towards driving?
You intend to hit public roads with admitted "poor driving skills"
Are you taking lessons to improve?
It's great to have airbags but it sounds like you plan to rely on them
Ideally you'd rely on a strong driving ability from lots of practice
Could you live with yourself after possibly causing a fatal accident?

  • +1

    ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE

If you are P plate or L licence, and you don't register your car under your parents or other full license driver, The rego + CTP+Insurance will take around 3000$
In todays maket,7000& budgets, you cant find any car with Auto transmission, reverse camera, functionalble airbags and not less than 2013 …

If the budgets can be negotiable, I suggest increase 30-40% to get a last gen mazda 2 and update carplay system by yourself(only around 150 if the car come with a screen).
If the budgets is fixed, My only suggestion is get a much older car, and prepare to be a car technician.
