Owned one of these for a few years now, and the plastic rim that adjoins the metal scoop has started snapping off in small pieces when scooping ice cream. Not sure I’d buy another one but in fairness we do put it in the dishwasher, and I’m not sure you meant to do that with these?
Pretty happy with other zyllis products we’ve got though.

Wouldnt recommend this brand either. Apparently the "metal" head has some sort of metallic coating that starts to come off after awhile.

Get yourself a proper full aluminium scoops like Norpro or Zeroll and it will last you forever

This i would recommend better than the zyliss scoop. And its cheaper

          I disagree.

Stick with stainless steel scoops. The liquid filled aluminum ones sound good by having an 'anti freeze' feature, but put them in water too hot or the dishwasher and the aluminum reacts poorly… and you end up with crap all over your ice cream.

Read the reviews on the one you've linked. They say the same thing. Unless you hand wash these ones, the coating really stuffs up.

          • @UFO: It does say in the instructions these must be hand washed only… Ours is >10yrs old and like new still

            • @pauliau: OP's one is very clearly advertised as dishwasher safe. Look at the ad.

I use zeroll but ruined my first one by putting it through the dishwasher. They have to be hand washed.

        Thanks for the inside scoop

      • Same thing happened to me. Was always hand washed too

      • We have one and you’re right: ours has a coating that’s been peeling off over the years, like chrome. We only ever hand wash ours. I wouldn’t get one of these Zyliss ones. Would rather a solid aluminium one. I’ve been keeping an eye on pricing for those.

    • I've had one with the same plastic bits coming off and the metal flakes off and it's never been in the dishwasher in the bin few weeks ago ..

Ozbargainers are still using their Bulla one.

    • 100% that scoop is the best. Sharp edge works so well

Scoop ? Straight to the tub

The RRP of $40 is a rip.

    THIS is a $40 scoop! https://www.amazon.com.au/KitchenAid-Cream-Scoop-8-Inch-Blac…

Serrated edge, stainless steel (100% dishwasher safe), textured scoop surface so ice cream doesn't stick in there…. god level scooping! It's $34 (not cheap), but if you want to scoop rock hard deep freezer icecream, this is the king. When you scoop, you gently swing left and right and you literally cut through rock hard icecream instead of trying to dig through it like a standard scoop. Dip it in a cup of hot water beforehand for really stubborn tubs, but not really needed.

And it's KitchenAid. Big name in quality kitchen stuff.

  • Simple solution for those who put in a dishwasher - don't.

    • or buy one that can go in the dishwasher like everything else.

  • This one said "Special Features ‎Dishwasher Safe" on Amazon, and the last photo is one scoop in dishwasher…

    • Just don't…. it's incorrect/false advertising. You'll get a film of residue all over the scoop and your ice cream. Read reviews.

Stainless steel scoop only. Trust me.

      • What causes the film residue?

        • +1

The aluminum reacts with the strong alkali detergent and higher temps of the dishwasher. It's that chemical reaction that causes the film. Google will explain exactly what's going on, but I'm pretty sure its the strong base detergent (as opposed to a strong acid)…. it's right up there on the pH scale, about 11-12 or something.

It's one of the easiest things to clean manually in a few seconds. I get the whole DW thing and am super lazy but some things really are better left in/to the sink.

Every time I see these deals, I'm so happy I have my mother's scoop from the 60's. Never fails, has the pushbutton bit that slides behind to release the scoop…I do still see them sometimes in op-shops.

  • Get a midnight icecream scoop, you wont need to buy another scope again :).
