Moving off Telstra - What Are My Best Budget Options?

I've been on Telstra for many years now thanks to contracts (phone + Series X). These contracts are finished up now, just in time for Telstra to force me onto a higher mobile plan. Having been out of the loop for so long, I'm wanting to know about providers that are budget oriented, but still provide a decent connection.

  • I WFH primarily, so my data usage is next to nothing (averaging about 1.2gb per month last 3 months).
  • I live in Brisbane but occasionally go rural with my parents living out near Goondiwindi and other relatives living in Toowoomba.
  • I don't make any international calls/texts, and would just get an eSIM if I went traveling.
  • 5g isn't necessary, but would be a nice addition.
  • I would need to port my number over.

What are some decent options for my use case? I saw this Boost deal which seems really good. I'm also on Aussie Broadband and could likely grab one of their budget plans for month to month flexibility if I needed it.

TIA for any guidance!

Boost yearly prepaid, especially if you need Telstra's full coverage.

      This is only correct answer

      • Yep.

    • I can confirm that they do not have the full Telstra coverage even if they say they do. My partner is on Telstra prepaid and I’m on the yearly boost SIM card and I regularly notice that the connection speed and at rate times the coverage are different between the two (We both have the same phone). A lot of time she has 5G and great connectivity while I have 4G and with okay reception.

      • Interesting. Telstra may have some QOS going to prioritize first-party customers with access to better speeds/towers.

      • I've been on Telstra for decades. Moved to boost at the start of the year and have noticed no difference in coverage.

Spend your reward points if you're done with Telstra. There's some good stuff in there if you have enough points.

I am doing the same thing. The latest plan increase inline with CPI was the last straw for me. I will be going to Boost as it still offers Telstra full network. Aussie is good too but uses Optus.

  • Amaysim but be aware they use the Optus network.

  • Boost

    woolworths

  • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOST

Can't wait for them to include esim and have a bigger 12 month plan.

  • Boost. Can get the yearly $200 kits for $170 or something?

  • If you move to boost. Can you "port" back to telstra for the JB hifi/Good Guys deals? Or is it still seen as being with telstra in their eyes?
