Credit Cards (No FX Fees) for US Trip That The Kids Can Use, and Parents Can Monitor?

Hi,

Im looking at a family trip to the US and looking for the best way to manage the 4 teenagers with credit cards with no FX fees.

The kids are already trusted with spending but on holiday its a little different, so im hoping some good suggestions or recommendations exist within OzB.

Thanks in advnace.

  • bankwest zero plat is good. no annual fee and no fx fee. fx rate is set by mastercard (if you choose pay in local currency when overseas). you can check usage on the app like all other credit cards out there.

or wise debit card is good. since it's a debit card, you preload money so kids cannot spend over the balance.

    • thanks. I will check that out.
Would you know if the app they have lets parents track the spend?

  • Anybody out here that tried Revolut?

    • I did come across Revolut that has a monthly fee depending on your preferred options. Definitely looks interesting but like you im keen to hear others experience with them and their app.

      • We are going to take it to India:
One can quickly make a virtual Visa card, chuck some money onto it and scammers can ONLY get what is preloaded there.
After being to India before I am glad to pay Revolut to avoid surprises.
        Privacy.com is doing virtual cards.
Trust is nice, prevention saves arguments later!

  • Most credit cards I have seen limit the age for additional card holder, must be 16 or older, so not sure if your kids meet that criterion. Also for Bankwest, it is maximum of 3 additional cardholders.

How about just consider fee free transaction account with debit card? You can just top up the account with whatever amount you wish, usually supported via NPP so it can be instant. Many of these have age limit of 13 or 14 from memory. See list at:

    • thanks for that link, i never knew that one existed.

      I have 2 under 16, the other 2 are over 18.

I currently just set up Apple Pay or Google Pay with my card, but this way it doesnt discern who actually made the purchase.

      • Have you considered a debit card? Minimum age requirements can be as low as 9 and you have more control over spending.
