Gaming Laptop or ASUS ROG Ally

Hey everyone
I have a PS5 & XSX for most of my gaming but always wanted to play some PC games that I get for free on Epic, GOG and also steam along with buying games that are not available on consoles

Now I don’t need the best when it comes to a gaming laptop nor do I want something crap, something respectable under or on $1k or do I just wait till the teething issues are over with the ROG Ally and get that even tho it’s $1.3k

Comments

  • I'd personally go a laptop still. The handhelds still have weird issues happening with them.

    • Yep that’s why I’d wait till that’s all sorted

On that note tho, anyone recommend a gaming Laptop?

      • If it must be portable, Lenovo Legion 5 are excellent value, the Legion 5 Pro have a better screen. Look for student discount and sales that come up regularly

  • Steam deck?

Can it play Fortnite and epic games, GOG?

Downvoted for a simple question as I have no idea if it can or can’t

The steam deck can do that but not out of the box / on SteamOS. You'd have to install Windows on it, which means it would be a comparable experience to the ROG Ally in terms of software… although there is likely more community support for windows on deck. But still, much tinkering needed.

Of course the Ally has better performance than the steam deck but imo not $500 more. If you want performance I'd be looking at a laptop / NUC instead.

If it doesn't need to be portable and something that would sit next to your console this would be pretty good for cheap PC gaming:

(just make sure you select a GPU upgrade here, 3070 or 6800)

What’s the best price for the steam deck and best place to buy it seeing it’s a grey import

      • Not fortnite because of anticheat stuff. Maybe with windows.

But you can get epic games and others on there without too much hassle. You install Heroic Launcher and set up epic and gog etc in there, and then they'll work. They've done a good job getting linux to run windows games.
Similar with Emudeck for emulation, including Switch games.

Basically the steam deck is pretty open to running anything you want. It's just gonna be a bit easier and more refined if they happen to be on steam

        • So you can’t play Fornite even using epic on steam deck

          • @Twisty: Incorrect. You can play Fortnite on Steam Deck. But you need to install Windows on it. But that's not a big deal, you can dual boot and switch to it anytime you want.

The only reason it doesn't run in the regular OS is because that uses Linux and Fortnite is a Windows game AND has anti-cheat tech. Windows games are usually fine (SD uses a translation layer that works well), but because of the online play, Fortnite doesn't play well with the translation layer.

It's just a bit less convenient than running in the native OS.

Apparently you could also skip dual-boot and use xbox cloud gaming, by installing Edge and going to https://www.xbox.com/en-US/play/games/fortnite/BT5P2X999VH2
Never heard of this before but might have to try it out on my ipad

  • Does it have to be a laptop? If not a desktop will be cheaper (and more powerful), even pre-built ones. You can even stream to a mobile device like a phone or your tv with very good results.

If you go laptop. You can find some ~$1k gaming laptops that are more powerful than a Ally (but less than a desktop). Rule of thumb, anything with a dedicated gfx card will be a improvement over the ally which only has integrated graphics (albeit very impressive).

  • … Did you end up with the Ally or laptop? 🤣

    • Nothing atm

      Leaning towards a steam deck

Short on $ atm, I like the ally but the issues with it puts me way off

  • I would personally get a gaming laptop rather than an asus rog ally as gaming laptops are far more versatile in terms of gaming experience

  • +1

    Steam Deck.

  • Yeah Plus 1 for Gaming Laptop
