best thing about costco is the $1.99 hotdog and drink

  • Never been to Costco. What are people buying there that makes paying the $65/year membership worth it?

    • +7

The fuel… I fill up a couple time pays for membership easy.

    • +3

Share it with a friend, half the price

      • +2

When we signed up they did look to see if we were in the same address, lucky I still had a spare 'change of address' for my license so now my sister is living in my house according to Costco 😂

      • +2

They clamping down on that, so might need to take the card holding friend with you soon. Though I wonder how often they really would ID check. Plus business membership they can hardly ID if you send an employee there.

(profanity) those big salty chickens are good…

      • Just get a friend to buy a $25 gift card.

Bakery is pretty good, $11 for 12 huuuuge muffins, $25 for 16 brownies+caramel slices. I mostly shop the rebate items like when they have crazy markdowns to clear stock. $5 for 800gm pipis, $5 for 2kg shredded cheese, $1 for 1L Gippsland yogurt, Skecher shoes for $8, $5 for 1kg+ hotdogs, $25 for a keg of German beer. Near date food items but I chuck it in the freezer and haven't had anything go off.

They also have lots of stuff you dont find at Colesworth and their own branded products as well. The Karen pastry biscuit, so damn good I could eat a whole box of it didn't cost $15 😂

Samples - the only limit is how thick your skin is

Return policy - one of the best. You don't like something you can return it since you had to buy it in bulk, obviously don't abuse it by returning 90% of the food you buy. I returned the Weis nut cream balls as they were the most disgusting 'treat' I've ever tasted lol.

      • Petrol. Consistently the cheapest in the area. You will easily save more than $65 a year in fuel if you live near a Costco petrol station and top up there. So cheap to the point where the Ampol near my local Costco will lower their petrol prices to match as soon as Costco Fuel opens for business. The moment Costco Fuel closes for the day, their petrol prices jump back up again.

      • Meat & Seafood. By far the freshest and the cheapest compared to Colesworth. Just be prepared to buy minimum of 1-2kg at once. I have a vacuum sealer so this is a non-issue for me. Their salmon fillet is so fresh I buy it weekly and eat it for sashimi.

      • International products. Costco often has goods from other countries that you cannot get here at all or without jacked up prices. I will often get A&W Rootbeer which lolly shops here sell at almost double price, seaweed flavoured Lays chips from Taiwan and cheap as chips Manuka honey.

      • Costco croissants. I can eat that shit up all day every day.

You milage may vary depending on how close a Costco is to you. My Costco is only 15min away so a membership is a no-brainer for me; cheap petrol for my cars and I can avoid going on weekends which the place gets packed like sardines.

    • Big chickens, brioche buns, giant muffins, 4 dozen eggs. All cheaper than colesworth. The big chickens alone are worth it.

    • Not an insane question so here's a plus 1.

Also I think it depends on lifestyle, number of family members, business, cooking habits, kids and other factors. I've had it before but find that with 2 people, a small/med size fridge and cooking most meals per week, it wasn't worth it.
Miss the pizzas though and if i was located near a Costco that had the fuel discount, I'd consider it again. I'd also consider a chest freezer so I could continue justifying those cheap giant pizzas.
I can make good pizza, but cheap, topping filled, giant pizza slices, is just another thing entirely.

    • They've finally introduced the Executive Card here. It's $130 but you get 2% cashback on all Costco purchases (except fuel) at the end of the year. I'm in a household of five - it's a no brainer for us, I had executive membership in the US for 15 years and never got less than $600 back. Combined with a cashback credit card, Some years I got almost $2,000 cashback purely from Costco purchases.

  • Beware if you're buying the Portuguese Tarts (esp. at Lake Macquarie). I purchased on Saturday and they weren't discounted, despite the signage on the shelf. I queried at checkout, and was taken to a manager's area where they processed a $4 refund to my card. On checking today the original payment is on my card, but not the refund. YMMV.

    • +1

Takes a few days for the refund to go through

    • -6

Beware costco casula scam me a few times, they scan the item twice.
They refunded but if i was at colesworth, i would get the item for free?

      • +2

Nope, you wouldn't. Considered Human error. The same outcome would be had.

Biggest Costco tip to easily work out what is truely a clearance item is look at the last number in the price .
If it ends in an 8 it's is clearance, a 7 usually below cost and if it ends in a 6 they are almost giving it away.
This method makes it easy to scan for the real bargains. My main Costco is in an internet black hole area, it's even difficult to send a text message while inside.

  • To Costco users:

How do you find their frozen berries?
I am looking to join membership and looking to stock up froze berries every now and then for smoothies.

Likewise, how are their dry fruits ( Pistachios to be very specific)?

    • Frozen berries are good, dry fruits are good. Just join and if ur not happy, cancel and they will refund you the membership cost. Everyone’s summary here is pretty stop on

    • +1

The berries have gone up a fair bit over the last 12 months. The mixed berries are now $25.99 for 2kg, compared to $11/kg at Woolworths. Although the Costco mixed berries don't have those annoyingly large strawberries that take up 80% of the bag. I cant remember how much the blueberries were on their own but I think there isn't too much of a difference now due to inflation. I remember the savings being a bit more significant.

    • they have quite a range of different nuts in 1kg? tubs. Cashews, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, pretty good if you can get them on rebate. if you find its a bit 'stale', just return it. Ive returned a tub of cashews before that my sister said was stale-ish when she opened it

  • Great "deal" on the Majans Bhuja Mix 1kg lol

  • +1

Those korean noodles are really good

  • The Costco are too far away in Brisbane, can't justify the membership as it takes 35 to 45 mins drive to go there, it's not worth it for me to go time and petrol wise but I envy those people living close to them.

  • Are their Portugese tarts any good?

    • They're pretty good. They're not amazing, but certainly no complaints. I just wish you didn't have to buy such a massive pack of them.

      The bagels are excellent though.

    • they are quite sweet, like much sweeter than a normal Portugese tart, but decent for what it is

  • do they ship fresh foods to north Queensland? can a Costco member please check for me. thank you

    • i dont see any fresh foods on their website, the only thing they have in food > Specialty food is 2 olive oils

  • How good are these Portuguese Tarts?!? Pop them in the air fryer for a few minutes, and they taste exactly like those from those bakery shops in Portugal.
