Received 2 New Cards Instead of 1 from up Bank. What Do I Do?

Hey there OzB,

I recently disputed a transaction and as a result had my card cancelled.

I just got my new one today, however I seem to have mistakenly been sent two. They're both in my name, the only difference is the last 4 digits of the card number and the CVV.

Is there any special procedure to take care of this, or is it worth just keeping it in case of some mishap with the current card, to avoid having to get another card delivered (and more importantly me having to pay for it)?

Thanks.

You'd need to activate the card and only one of them will work

    • Say that card for lost though, and I got it cancelled. Couldn't I then just activate the other card? It doesn't have much use, but in the event of it getting lost I'd probably have to pay for a new one, so that's a workaround, yeah?

        That is not a workaround.

Only 1 of those card will work. If it gets lost or stolen, bank will send you another card. There is 0% chance they will let you activate an older card let alone use it.

Log onto your online banking and it should ask you to activate the card associated with your account. Only one of the card will match the details the bank is looking for.

        • Ah, I see. I hindsight that makes perfect sense. Okay, thanks.

        • Nope, both cards are perfectly able to be activated. Not at the same time, but the system accepts both CVVs (you can put in the CVV and go back at the Make a PIN page to cancel the setup). Interesting…

    Give one to me.

    • That'll be $10 plus shipping.

With unlimited access to your money? Post that as a bargain.

$12 plus shipping for that comment.

Use one of the credit cards to pay for a psychologist, ask them to teach you how to make decisions like this for yourself.

    • Eh, psychologists are fairly expensive. I think I might instead refer to the free forum page. Appreciate the idea though!

Or a life skills coach …. wonder if they offer guarantees?

      • Nothing guaranteed with me, my friend.

Have you tried calling your bank?

I started a live chat with them, awaiting a reply.

Activate both, spend up big. Claim the card is stolen to the bank. Get arrested. Post here about legal advice?

    • Best idea I've heard all day. Unfortunately, I'm stuck at step one, since you can't activate more than one card. You were really onto something there though, get more of those big ideas though, you'll be a master fraudster in no time.

      • Need to work (debatable definition) in Canberra to be 'master' fraudster.
Someone in the mail system has probs already layby-ed the cards going fwd, (LOL) so probs pipped at the post, by the post.

Good to see banks are so careful with security…./s

      • since you can't activate more than one card

Then activate one, and chop the other one up? How is this so difficult?

        • Well that's no fun, is it? Thought I could save myself some money by keeping it. Apparently not, it seems. Might still save me some time, though. Thanks for your input!

…to avoid having to get another card delivered (and more importantly me having to pay for it)?

Does your bank charge you a fee for a replacement card?

    • Upon further research, no, they don't. There goes that plan.

  • both probably work if you activate them. keep one spare in the drawer

    • Those are my thoughts, yeah.

  • Buy one, get one free.

    • So nice of them, isn't it?

    Tell an adult

    • Hillarious, but I doubt the other friends I live in a home with would have any better ideas than you fine folks.

  • Do both cards show up in web banking for activation?

Or do you need to enter the card number manually?

    • I just need to enter the CVV. Neither card works, Up sent out a new card for me.
