Seems like the keyboard hobby was the covid years equivalent of the tulip mania, prices went nuts and now everything is crashing, hobby is dead pretty much.

Yep, tons of vendors overleveraged themselves during the covid frenzy and are now eating their markups. 2 year GMK lead-times didn't help either.

      hobby is dead pretty much.

No, it's returning to where it should be.The hypebeasts who threw money at every mediocre groupbuy and inflated the aftermarket are now leaving. The enthusiast scene is still doing well (e.g. Geonworks).

LOL fark Geon lmao.Mans a goddamned hack, at this point I'd be more inclined to trust rama over geon. Love that I appear to have angered the local neckbeard coven too, keep paying 2k for your aluminium paperweights guys, it'll totally make up for the lack of a woman's touch in your lives.

what's wrong with Geon? Rama is basically a joke now

          • @DeToxin: I haven’t paid attention in a couple of years. Last I remembered, Rama had a good reputation. What happened?

@thegieche: Too much to cover in the comments section.
Anyway, I was just surprised to see geon copping flack, I think they've done a good job with releasing enough of each board that basically anyone can get one at whatever the GB price is, which is what the hobby needed, less scarcity/FOMO.
You're right that plenty of people have left the hobby but it's far from dead, still plenty of enthusiasts, more than before covid I think.

        • What the (profanity) is rama and geon?

  • Thanks! Bought the Milkyway Demon Girl set! Shame you were OOS of the novelties and artisan :(

Bought a keyboard stand and some stabs for a 2021 group buy that slowly arrived bit by bit. Been out of the hobby for a while, I just need switches, does anyone have recommendations for the top linear and tactile switches to look at? Would like something thocky and not too heavy.

    • Did you buy the purple one??? I missed out!!!

      • +1

Yep, unfortunately it was the last one left but couldn't resist! Will also have somewhere to put my keyboard now :)

        • No doubt, you will love the stand :)

    • Gateron milky yellow pros (v2, I think?) seem to be one of the best pre-lubed, bang-per-buck linears based on some YT vids I've watched.

However, I quite like Hipyo Tech (Youtuber) in particular, and he recommends WS (Wuque Studio) switches, which are also pre-lubed (and in the same breath he mentioned JWCK/JWICK switches). I bought the JWICK yellow linears and have been quite happy with them. However, a new one that he's talked up a bit very recently are the WS Morandi switches.

      • Thanks, I'll have a look at them. I have lubed switches in the past but thinking it might just be easier to buy pre-lubed this time.

        • I lubed a set once and am unlikely to ever do it again, haha

I really like Gateron Oil Kings for linears. Very usable out of the box/bag. No scratchiness or leaf ping to my ears. Although I did lube to try and lower the sound pitch a bit. Which it did, but now I'm trying to remove some because I may have used a bit too much. :/

Got a set of Everglide Aqua Kings after that for my work keyboard, which aren't too bad either, but I can definitely hear some scratchiness, so they need lubing IMO.

Before the Oil Kings/Aqua Kings I was using Boba U4T and Feker Pandas tactiles. The U4Ts were good out of the box for me, and liked them a lot. The Fekers definitely needed lubing though, but then were quite a bit cheaper too. But both are definitely thocky, even if not new.

Although I do favour a heavier switch it seems, so not sure if any of these are too heavy for you.

wow, gmk dots are $105. i preordered them for $171 and waited a year for them 🙂

    • wow, and just during the covid I paid $450 for the R1

  • Had my eye on a few GMK keycap sets. Thanks OP!

  • Glad I am "out" of this hobby. Now I just run a modded wireless leopold with lubed switches and it sounds as good as any custom keyboard out there. It might not be premium, but it was cheap as chips to make it.

  • I enjoy a mechanical keyboard, I just switched to a GMMK for work, but I'm not going to pay almost as much for some keycaps as I paid for my whole keyboard. Ali sells whole keycap sets for about $8 and I have a hard time believing that these are worth 10-20 times the price.
