JB Hi-Fi New Instore Return Policy Warning

Hi everyone, I recently went to my local JB Hi-Fi to return a faulty cable for my iPhone.

The return process was going great until they asked to see the original card. I used Apple Pay and due to my iPhone acting weird I did a reset which removed all of the cards because they are stored on device. I got an exception, but it is not good for people who has the card they used lost or stolen or Apple Pay users who get a new device or have to reset.

They said if I couldn’t show my original card, I would only be able to get a gift card.

The original purchase was in store.

    • If it's the same as Android, when you tap the card, it generates a unique credit card number and send that to the terminal, even if the card looks the same as your physical card when viewed in the app.

No, it is device specific and it can’t be backed up. Lets say you add the card number ending in 9876 to Apple Pay the iPhone will contact your bank server to verify you and to generate a device specific number let’s say ending in 5678. Then you purchase something at a store and tap your iPhone the EFTPOS reader sees a card number ending in 5678. Say if you got a new iPhone or had to reset or even sign out of iCloud it will erase the card numbers. If you return something and the retailer wants to check the device account number against the receipt they will see the two numbers don’t match. You can check your Device account number by going to the wallet app and tapping your card then the 3 dots in a line then Card numbers. Sorry if any mistakes I am typing on my iPhone.

I get pretty annoyed by this as well. Kmart and BigW all enforce it pretty strictly, if you can't show the same last 4 digits in your Apple Wallet, they will give you store credit.

Like some have said along with the other thread it's likely some preventive thing to reconcile it back, but yeah it makes it super annoying because if you get a new phone his month for example, set it up again, the number is different again. Then even if you purchased something a week ago, they will tell you, you can't return it because the number doesn't match. I've had arguments staff about this before, but it's pointless since they just work there and follow orders.

    • I might just use online click and collect or delivery for non consumable items. I noticed for Kmart and JB they send a request to the online team in head office and then the online team just refund the original card used and 99% of the time if the account is still open that was attached to the card it goes back just like normal.

      • I kind of just resorted to paying with a physical card these days, like I use my phone when I pay for groceries and stuff that I know there's no chance I will return etc.

Didnt we have a very similar forum topic not long ago where the OP cant produce the card for refund

This is why I use an actual card and don't rely on my phone for purchases.

In fact I can pull a card out quicker than I can access one on my phone.

  • cash is king

Discount ultimate gift card is kingest

  • There is difference with what is said versus what they can see. If you know what I mean then refunding into a physical card is very easy on payments made via a phone.

    JB you've done it again!

Stopped using Mobile wallets years ago just because of this limitation with refunds and one other reason, i.e. I don't like tapping my phone on publicly accessible payments terminals (such as buses, trains, Macca's, etc) because I think it's not smart from cyber-security perspective.

What I read was stay away from everything Apple, wilco

  • Why didn’t you just exchange the old cable for a new one ?

I already tried a replacement but it stopped working too.

Can you mention which region / store if possible? For psa :)

    • +1

It was the JB in Brunswick VIC

    • I think the brand of the cable is more important for psa.

Afterall OP has claimed 2 faulty cables in a row.

      • It was Belkin and the manufacturer I went with for my current cable is Anker.

  • Ahh, has this issue at chemist warehouse.

Now I use PayPal and there is no check

  • did u try different store ?

  • Most retailers have these policies but rarely enforce them. Bunnings is the place I most often return things as it's so easy to get more than you need or just get the wrong size, pretty much everytime they refund without question and without checking the product I'm returning. Other places I've returned things have never asked either.

  • Just tell them yep it’s the same, most of the time they don’t check. Even amex to mastercard etc.

My fav is amex to Revolut. Get to keep the points and the cash.

By the time you tap and it gets approved boom too late.. they can do a void but most are too dumb.

If they say no just move on to another store and try again.

  • Geez, many people in this thread need to read up on their consumer rights.

    https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/problem-with-a-product-or-…

First of all ignore the people claiming that the ACCC has determined that this is legal:

We don’t resolve individual disputes or give legal advice about a consumer’s right to a repair, replacement or refund for a faulty product or service.

Second, store policies are not a lawful basis for denying you a refund if you are entitled to one:

Businesses can’t take away a consumer's right to a refund or replacement for faulty products or services. It’s illegal for businesses to rely on store policies or terms and conditions which deny these rights.

You are absolutely NOT required to accept store credit or the like if the ACL indicates that you are entitled to a refund. You are entitled to a refund in the same form as the original payment, e.g. credit card refund for credit card payment, but there is no requirement that it be the exact same card for obvious reasons.

Stop being both correct and sensible.

You won't get very far here.

so you log into your apple pay and show the transaction, i dont get what the issue is, warrantee is usually repair or replacement, if you are after a refund because they cant do the first 2 then you really need to have the money go back on the form of payment used, otherwise people would just use credit to buy things and then return them for cash which them puts the retailer at risk of reversals, refund credit for credit, cash for cash, zip for zip, afterpay for afterpay, savings for savings. it isnt that hard to understand is it? or did you want a refund in oranges?

    • I had to reset my iPhone because it was having some issues and tech support asked me to reset my iPhone as a troubleshooting step for an unrelated issue. Because I reset my iPhone Apple Pay erased all of the cards stored on the device. It also gets deleted if you remove the card from the wallet app or sign out of your Apple ID on the device. You can’t simply log back in because the cards have a device specific card number that cannot be backed up. You can add the card again but it will have a different Device account number associated. So when they check the receipt with the card number in the wallet app it would say a different card number. The reason I didn’t get a replacement is because I already tried a replacement but that stopped working as well. (Sorry about spelling I am typing on my phone)

If you paid with card, they are refunded into your original payment method, can't see any issue with that really
They obviously wouldn't want to give you a cash refund, this would be a interests free cash withdrawal

  • this reminds me of the time when i had to return a galaxy s20 note 5g and they werent able to give me a replacement so they had to refund me $2200 in cash. manager looked pretty annoyed for some reason, probably couldnt enforce the "show me the original card" line.

  • Recently needed to get a refund for insurance payment as my premium went down and they said they were required to refund to the original card (Westpac debit) which I no longer had. They said once that was attempted and the refund bounced, then they could issue a cheque instead. Well Westpac accepted the money (the merchant provided evidence), but I wasn't notified by the bank and when I went into branch twice and with phone banking they all told me it would have bounced to the merchant. Had to escalate it through the Westpac complaints process before they 'found' the money, took weeks

  • Watch your back Jack for refunds too! Anywhere! Always check your bank transactions, cause sometimes they issue a refund, process it at the terminal and some sneaky fuuk back at HQ doesn't process it and you never get the money back.
