Free: Little book of business ideas

    • Underrated.

I always wonder if this inspired anyone to become a scammer

    • +2

      with outdated techs.

      • +1

Nothing really new under the sun. Except for maybe getting a call from someone sounding exactly like your next of kin, with developments in ML..
I don't see this one in the book btw and it's probably one of the scariest..

For those unaware - you need just a few words from the person to train a model that very very similar to them

I'm amazed when I read on Reverse Australia site how many ppl, not only answer cold calls from unknown or unrecognised numbers on their landlines, but just how many call them back. If you ever get ppl calling who hang up after you say something, you may just have been voice sampled.

Spoofed number + AI duplicated voice of that numbers owner + hacked govt databases (with their info), What could possibly go wrong?

The Little Black Book of Scams

    Sounds dark

Wait for the sequel - The Big Black Book of ACCC investigations that weren't acted on.

      • Sounds like a slog so I'm gonna wait for the next Underbelly. Hope it's Plutus!

    Rule number 1:
    gumtree/fb marketplace - CASH only

    • +2

Lol the other day either a current affair or today tonight had a segment about marketplace scams, then advised their viewers to avoid cash transactions if possible… Yikes.

      • +2

then advised their viewers to avoid cash transactions if possible…

What on earth was the reasoning there? Surely they are not saying that plastic Aussie notes are easy to counterfeit?

        • Probably you can get robbed?

        • And that it's hard to prove that cash actually changed hands, and that you can't trace it to a person

          • @digitizer: if you do the transaction at a bank ATM, there's a recording of the buyer's face, date and time etc, the whole environment surrounding the transaction, the amount etc. Only a moron would try to go ahead with a scam if you do it right outside a bank branch. Obviously I"m talking $500+ transactions here for convenience sake.

            • @eggboi: That's a good tip, although I am not sure anyone would make the effort to go to one to sell something the next person will happily buy from their house

              Only a moron

So you mean only a scammer? (:

            • @eggboi: Pray they don't see your PIN being entered ;)

          • @digitizer: There's going to be an electronic comms trail leading up to the transaction… that surely can't be the reason.

            • @rumblytangara: Doesn’t help police much if its with a disposable gumtree account they cant link to a name. But who am I kidding, police doesn’t get involved even if you do have a name and address and all the comms in the world.. going by anecdotal evidence at least
