New RAM help Please. Intel X15 Barebone Laptop

Hi All
I hope you are doing well.
I have purchased and received my new laptop from the post below. Intel X15 Barebone Laptop
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/779921
Thanks to the OP, AsianInvAsian for their efforts.

I need some help please in what to look for in RAM,

Page: 15 and 16.
Table 8. Supported DDR5/-RS Non-ECC SO-DIMM Module Configurations
Version: LAPAC71H
Product Code: BAC71HBBU6000
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-12700H
GPU: Intel® Arc™ A730M VRAM 12GB GDDR6

Memory
Two 260-pin SO-DIMM sockets support the following memory features:
• DDR5 4800 MHz
• Two independent memory channels with interleaved mode support
• Unbuffered, single-sided or double-sided SO-DIMMs
• 64GB maximum total system memory
• Non-ECC SO-DIMMs
• Serial Presence Detect

NOTE
To be fully compliant with all applicable DDR SDRAM memory specifications, the LAPAC71 should be populated with SO-DIMMs that support the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data structure. This allows the BIOS to read the SPD data and program the chipset to accurately configure memory settings for optimum performance

I checked out the RAM in the listing:
https://www.mwave.com.au/product/crucial-8gb-1x-8gb-ddr5-480…

Crucial 8GB (1x 8GB) DDR5-4800MHz SODIMM Laptop Memory
- Storage Capacity: 8GB
- Speed: DDR5-4800
- PC Speed: PC5-38400
- Module Type: SODIMM
- CAS Latency: 40
- Extended Timings: 40-39-39
- DIMM Type: Unbuffered
- Voltage: 1.1V - CT8G48C40S5

My questions are: Is this the exact RAM or RAM specs I should be looking for?
Eg: Extended Timing, CAS Latency(s) CL=??, x8 vs x16 based, PC Speed, Dual Ranked, Voltage and anything that will help with performance.
RAM Timings and latencies? Are these still a thing? Or is it Auto now?

My RAM Budget is $200-$300
Minimum is 32GB Preferably 64GB (if stable) (@1.1Volt?)
Memory will be used as:
1 x 20GB RAM Drive.
1, 2 or 3 VM's
Auto CAD
Hundreds of PDFs.
And three Tabs of Chrome

I have done some reading/Googling and I think that I am suffering from Paralysis from Analysis. Which has left me a little confused.

Thank you to every one, to me help learn.
And may the Bargains be plentiful.
Regards
Captains Gun

PS. Yes my Gramma is average. Thanks for understanding.

  • Thank you, I'll check it out now : )

  • Worth waiting till tomorrow for any potential Prime day savings. Amazon US via Amazon AU usually have good deals on Ram during prime day sale.

    • That is a very good point. I will do that. Thank you : )

  • 1 x 20GB RAM Drive

Is there a particular reason you need this? In the era of SSDs there aren't all that many use cases where RAM drives are needed anymore.

Unless your laptop supports XMP (unlikely?) you're going to be using standard JEDEC RAM speeds. This means you'll be running DDR5-4800 on that CPU. Feel free to buy higher-specced RAM if it's cheaper, but there will be no performance benefit since your CPU does not support higher memory speeds without XMP/overclock. Forget about the latencies too.

Make sure you're getting SO-DIMM (laptop) RAM.

Great question: Old habit I guess, used to put browser cache and other program cache(s) that did a lot of writing and temp file cache on there, saved the drive and liked the speed. Also loved to just nuke it and make a new one. But if not relevant today then I will change habits.

  • Storage - the Kingston NV2 you listed suffers from component lottery so the sample you get could be TLC or QLC, so it's generally not recommended unless you can't spend extra.

    Kingston KC3000 1TB $105
PCIe 4.0, TLC, DRAM, very good durability rating at 800TBW, 5 year warranty.
(Alternatively the Samsung 980 Pro 1TB $105.87 - very similar to the KC3000, but durability rating only 600TBW)

    WD SN570 2TB $155.37
PCIe 3.0, TLC, DRAMless (but the 2TB version has a massive 900GB dynamic HMB/pseudo-SLC cache, so speeds will be at maximum until then - it's one of the fastest DRAMless drives), good durability rating at 900TBW, 5 year warranty.
(Alternatively the Samsung 980 Pro 2TB $167.07 is on sale now at a crazy price so you should get this instead haha)

Totalling $260 $272 for both slots.

    • +1

Awesome pick up tekises. You just saved me : )
And I'll grab those two drives you mentioned. Thank you very much.
