More than 300 Layoffs Flagged by Victoria’s Health Department

Thanks Dan for saving us during Covid. We don’t need anymore healthcare workers. Thank you for cutting health jobs as that sector is running perfectly.

Along with property taxes being the highest in the country, can’t wait for you to put Victoria back on track.

Victoria voted for him unfortunately so what goes around comes around I guess.

    • +4

I am still stunned that people wanted to keep his party around after all the corruption and rona mess ups…

      • Labor is good for laborers, Victoria is always going to be a labor state. Just ask the unions.

        • Victoria is always going to be a labor state

That's the biggest issue; too many blue collar electorates who just blindly vote for Labor every election.

      • +2

No comment on Dan's corruption but let's be honest about the Liberals in VIC, They're literally unelectable at the moment. O'Brien, Guy and Pesuto are all terrible. Until the VIC LNP gets their act together, Labor is going to continue winning.

  • +11

Maybe he will fall down the steps again

    • +1

…someone give him a gentle nudge asap

    • +2

Fingers crossed. I bet he gets a good ambulance response. Unlike the test of us.

    • +1

Or he could knock over another cyclist?

  • +3

Time to trim the fat. Good move!

    • Not sure the health sector is where you want to be trimming fat. Sure there are many other publuic service departments where people have useless, duplicated positions where those layoffs would be better aimed.

    • so much waste with all of the woke processes they have to cater for…..booking a room NAIDOC for a few hundred with associated catering and then 5 turn up ……

I don't believe these are nurses or doctors or other healthcare workers. More like admin-type staff in public service who essentially do nothing. Would vote for Dan the man if I'm in Victoria.

    • +3

So you want doctors and nurses to do all the pre/post paperwork of patients ?

      • +1

We don’t need anymore healthcare workers.

Just because they work in health care does not mean their work cannot be replaced, stream lined and consolidated.

Dan is a clown no doubt but if savings are required, and it seems they are judging by the debt levels and deficits for the next few years, public service is a big expense to start trimming.

        • +4

It sounds reasonable. But the problem is the debt levels and deficits are there because of Dan's choices.

  • +1

    Leaked to newscorp surprise surprise!!

  • +5

Who needs healthcare workers when you've got a giant toll tunnel to build on budget??

    • +3

      And on time

    • +3

And a big train set no one wants

  • +4

    $50 million in annual savings

Maybe someone can explain to me how laying off 300 people amounts to this much in savings. What are these people doing?

    • Curing covid?

      • +9

I understand people losing jobs is unfortunate but we need more information before we take our pitch forks outs. I can imagine that a lot of work created during the pandemic is now redundant.

I know of a manager who works for a Government job seeking program. She gets to work at 10am, takes two phone calls and leaves work by 3pm. Once a week she creates a report for upper management, but this is essentially her work load every single day.

She only has one person working under her and she does the majority of the work. This manager earns 90k, it's crazy.

        • +6

Seems to be the norm in Government service.

        • +5

Maybe Dan could cut Down on his social media and PR staffers?

        • +4

The problem is that they don’t fire people like your friend unfortunately. They will most likely fire some support staff who actually do something and their workload will be split between the ones who remain in employment.
And next year they will hire more useless sloths. Diversity officers or some such.

    • +2

      That is very cheap!
Our QLD chook pays every of her saviours 0.5 to 1mio per year! All for her personal enjoyment whilst the hard working staff in healthcare gets massive cuts!

      • +5

If you ever worked in the public service you would know it would be better to burn it down and start fresh, terribly bloated with incompetent people in basically all positions of power.

    • +6

$100k a person, $11k super, $5k payroll tax, $5k a year office space, laptop, chair, desk, training, WHS insurance, long service leave accrual, software licenses, etc

It'd like be a mix of managers on more than that and some grunts on less than that, but generally adding 50% to a salary is a good way of figuring out the cost of an employee.

    • Must be very impressive if it costs $50M! However Dan did spend $1.4B on icu beds which he seemed to have forgotten about!

  • +5

Don't worry Danstar, the Libs should have their act together in Victoria by the 2040s, change is afoot.

If you've ever worked in the public service you'll know that no and again you need to take out the low hanging fruit.

    • -4

I think Dan needs to go to China again to have a secret meeting to find out what the Libs are up to if they’re due to win in 2040

Sadly, you do realise this is because of some KPIs being met in the department right…

From what I am aware of what happens in NSW, there was a push to get doctors to see more patients in less time as a cost efficiency measure.

The problem was that doctors took this literally and started to cut corners and put patient's lives at risk. The result was the KPIs were met and then people started to lose their jobs. So, not only did the standards drop in the health care system, but the health professionals ended up losing their jobs.

This is why doctors should refuse to work if they are fatigued, especially if they are not actually required to work for that day. You aren't going to get a special promotion by doing extra yards and you ultimately will risk losing your job if you are suspended.

Again, you must realise the person doing the cost cutting is a bean counter. They look at the data and see that there are too many health professionals because the delays have fallen. The bean counter will not understand what is going on, this is why the culture in the medical profession needs to change.

You can choose to be a superhero, lower standards and put your colleagues out of work. That's the choice you are making.

No shit, there is always some metric that will be key to the job layoffs. People can't vote to change this because regardless of which government was in power, the same statistics would be available to the current government. Don't you guys see? Most health professionals don't understand this basic concept, but yeah, I expect massive downvotes.

If health professionals cannot get their act together and change for the betterment of patient outcomes, then what can you expect. You will continue losing jobs because the data will reflect the culture. Change that, change the outcomes.

You were warned, and given the way out, but if your colleagues still choose to stay on the same path they are now. Don't blame the politicians. The bean counter is contrained too because they don't see everything.

I'm hoping the bean counter sees my post and how I was almost killed because of the way the system was setup, but they cannot write a report based on one report they saw on social media. They can only rely on the data, so I doubt they will actually change their recommendations when they write that report to cut your colleagues out from the health workforce.

My experience comes from the NSW health system, but similarly I don't see how it wouldn't apply to VIC health.

You can hate me, downvote me, but the message is clear.

    • Did you use chat gpt to write this?

    • +2

      TLDR

  • +2

Good chance a lot of these are contractor type folks who were hired in a rush during covid to support covid activities.
Everything from data, testing, admin, logistics, marketing. I knew a few aug shops that had people deployed who weren't really doing much as the recovery moved on.

From the "savings" seems like it's not actual bau staff per se

  • -1

Dan spends too much money on fighting covid, he's wasting money. Dan cuts back on the spending levels from covid, he's ruining healthcare.

Healthcare expenditure blew up under covid. @Danstar, if covid isn't an issue, surely you're fine with cutting back the spending, yeah?

    • But covid numbers are still so high and we need to get our 5th? jab now to be safe.

  • -2

I think Dan should re-employ all these workers who are about to be sacked and put them in his PR team / send them to China to make deals

  • +2

    Where's the 4000 ICU beds?
    Remember that?

    • -1

I think they're in China still. They're coming

    • plus the $1.4B spend!

  • +2

OP a healthcare worker who would otherwise have no role?

    • If you’re asking me if I work in healthcare, the answer is no.
Thanks for your concern though ;)

  • +1

Dans shutting down a renewable sustainable timber industry in Victoria.

Only 0.04% of the total forest area per year was havested and vast majority of that was actually regrowth from previously harvested areas.

Instead Dan is keen importing mostly clear felled trees from third world countries is the way to go instead villagers there are losing their lively hoods and being forced into cities and animals facing extinction. In 2019 ABC reported this was approx $6 billion worth or raw timber imported from around the world.

Researcher i spoke to doing research on the leadbeater possum numbers would like significant increase into funding to get a true view of the situation in Victoria as the sample area they have looked is tiny. She was more concerned about the impact of feral cats throughout the state.

Also how much flat pack furniture from overseas being imported with timber being of unknown origin.

Amazing how all these people claim its to save the environment. At least if it's in Australia we can supervise and regulate the timber harvest but if its coming from other countries we can't.

    But Victoria voted for Dan.

    • He's a disgrace.

  • Worst Premier ever but Victoria voted for him so you get what you deserve….
