These are well reviewed mics, one being a high quality USB mic at a good price, the other being a legendary vocal mic.

Some notes:

  • don't get the MV7 to use primarily as an XLR microphone, it's not wired properly for clean output, nor does it sound as tonally balanced
  • don't automatically get the MV7X as the alternative, look into other dynamic and condenser microphones as there are better ones at that price and lower
  • research the SM7B a little before buying to understand what you're getting and if it suits your needs
  • don't automatically get a cloud lifter/fethead for the SM7B, these days there are $150 interfaces that can deliver the clean power the SM7B needs

I'm sure there will be lots of fantastic comments and questions in this deal… enjoy?

kinda lame compare to last year….
and isnt the sm7b normally 500ish….

    • Yeah I've seen it fluctuate to that quite often

    • Most of those were probably counterfeit, the SM7B is normally $600-$650.

All-time low was $450ish, but a lot of factors involved like parts pricing having since jumped, and general demand for the product having dropped off a cliff here.

Stock levels would be a lot lower than 18 months ago, when people would have been eyeing off content creation or upgrading that existing setup.

Watch out for fake Shure mics from China sellers om Amazon

  • Just don't use the USB plug on the MV7, it's Micro-USB and if the cable snags as you move your boom it break the connector on the board, from what I have seen it's a pretty common fault.
Mine lasted a good 6-8min before it happened, then had to go buy a interface to run it via XLR.

I've had mine for 2 years without incident, but I spent a bit of time on the cable run making sure there was no tension on the plug or cable (as I normally do for cable runs)

Correct, this is just people incorrectly securing the cable and then blaming the product… this user's suggestion also ruins the audio quality of this microphone.

      • Also had mine for two years with no incident.

    • The audio quality out of XLR is awful and is for emergencies/backup only… I specifically mentioned this in the description.

The USB cable issue you're mentioning is simply a consequence of it being a USB mic… secure the cable to the boom arm properly so this doesn't happen.

This is a user error issue, especially if you're snagging it to the point of breaking the internal controller…

Thanks OP, first sale of the mv7 on here in a while. Got the Black + Tripod, will probably upgrade to the Elgato Wave arm in future.

    • Ditto. Deal on the Elgato wave arm not enough to make me pull the trigger right now.

      • Low profile or standard one?

  • Is it good to record fiddles such as a violin sound?

    • I think the SM7B is used a lot for recording, the MV7 seems to suit voice much more.
If you got some money to spare, look at the Ear Trumpet Labs - Josephine, beautiful sounding mic!

There's a lot of information from professional artists on the internet about what works well with the SM7B as it's been around for 50 years.

At a guess it would be akin to be close miking as this is a dynamic microphone. If that's not feasible you're going to be looking at condenser microphones instead and perhaps paying more attention to room treatment to dampen reflections if you don't want that in your recording.

If you go down that road, an alternative to consider is the sE Electronics DynaCaster.

I don't recommend the MV7 for instrument recording, and if that's your upper budget level, I'll link you some previous recommendations I've made once I'm sitting on my PC.

      • Here's some old recommendation lists, which are largely still valid:

Keep in mind these are not all-time low prices, and Amazon's Black Friday deals will likely be a little better, so there's plenty of time to sample and demo and get more of an idea. Podcastage on YouTube is a great resource, and then you can seek out reviewers or performers on YouTube who have recorded strings via the microphones you're interested in.

Some of these also see better deals from local retailers online, so keep an eye out via Google.
