Alternates to Gumtree

Been a little while since i posted on gumtree, but ive listed a dining table, chairs and a kids jumping castle last week and all i got was spam and phishing attempts.

What is everyone using those days?

At least with FB you can click and see if it's their real main FB account or not.

      • That’s true, similarly I only buy from locals (most of the time they are also part of the extended suburb group that I’m in too so makes it a little less likely it’s a scam)

My gold standard is if they have their mum added as a friend.

Unfortunately everyone now uses Facebook Marketplace. It's really inconvenient if you're browsing for something local because Marketplace doesn't have as specific categories as Gumtree, and you can't sort by "newest", and it's difficult to limit your search to a specific area.

For the size of Facebook its amazing how crap their UIs are.

If you put ?sortBy=creation_time_descend&daysSinceListed=1 in the url field of a search it'll force it to sort by newest btw.

On browser you can sort by newest but you are right about the area thing.

    • So stupid. Still plenty of people out there who refuse to use FB..

Gumtree is fine. I've sold many things on there over the years. You will get time wasters on any platform… at least with Gumtree it is publically accessible to the widest possible audience..

    • "Unfortunately everyone now uses Facebook Marketplace."

It's a big world out there, and not everyone thinks or acts like your cohort.

Elron Hoover being an utter prat doesn't make the creepy perving-app incel any less of a total one.

  • You can try Trading post.

Gumtree is so much better than FB Marketplace, so it saddens me to see that conversation of users. Similar to old school forums, yet another thing that Meta does a worse job copying and then sucks in the userbase, leaving everyone worse off.

I put everything I sell on both platforms, and it seems inconsistent as to where I end up getting the sale from. Definitely worth doing both, in my experience.

    • Do you mean 'conversion' of users?

      • Yep, sorry!

  • I've had similar scam types on Gumtree as well, especially high-value items. Just put up with it. You can try eBay, but they obviously take a cut. I have tried Trading Post but had 0 sales or enquiries for stuff I have listed there.

Facebook Marketplace has been okay, not too many scams but a lot of tyre kickers.

Gumtree and eBay have been my main source of sales with some stuff I am offloading at the moment.

  • I dont have Facebook so I have been relying on Gumtree. It WAS the place to go, whether you are selling or looking to grab a bargain. Unfortunately, my recent experience is making me look for alternatives.

Maybe it's time to sign up to Facebook, just for Marketplace. But then again, who is going to trust a new user? Its worth a shot though

    • Make a fake Facebook, that's what I did to use marketplace.

Facebook has the best memes tbh, it's worth having an account.

    • Facebook Marketplace is tehcnically same/same with gumtree.

Anyone selling on marketplace to a new user won't care cause in-person and cash payment is always preferred. If a marketplace user relies on electronic payment and post, I am surprised they're even on marketplace and/or gumtree.

So you're safe IMO if you're looking to buy local and cash. No one cares if you're a new user. I have sold items with people that have no profile pictures.

    Nextdoor app is another option

  • I find that maybe less than 20% of the people selling things on Facebook marketplace bother replying, even if you're telling them that you want to buy what they're selling and asking where and when you can come and get it.

    • Because 80% of listings on there are scams probably.

      • Or the conversation starts with the stupid: "Is it still available?"

Ive sold quite a few things lately in the $100-500 range and used both FB and gumtree (created a FB account specifically for this as i don't use FB). I have had much more success selling on FB but also more time wasters, lowballers and payID scammers.

  • Checked out eBay this morning. Been a while since I posted and they are asking for my passport or driver's licence before I can post again. Anyone know what they need this information for?

    • Sounds sus, I've never been asked for that info in 20 years, give them a call.

      • Very sus. Probably to report activities to the ATO lol

Have to second FB Marketplace. eBay is just too expensive to use.

  • There is an oversupply of "common" second hand goods, hence how difficult/time-consuming selling is.

It is not Gumtree, FB Marketplace, etc it is too much offer asking relatively high/mid prices and too little interest for them … bargains do sell almost immediately.
