    I appreciate Black Mesa, but the new xen levels were a total slog,
    just wanted the dam game to finish yesterday by then

      I recommend grabbing Half Life MMod which is completely free, if you prefer the gameplay of the classic HL with a couple of modern improvements. You'll obviously need the original game to install the mod.
