The Best Value Take Away

I noticed this week there has been another price rise at gyg. Nachos are $15.80. Minis are almost the price that normal items use to be. That’s with no drink or side..
At this price it’s cheaper to get a pub lunch somewhere. Or even a plain burger from a local fish and chip shop.

Most places are putting their price up higher and more often making it not worth it.

It got me thinking what is the best value take away from a franchise when you feel like some?

GYG still do have $3 tacos.
Mad Mex has $3 plant based tacos.
Hungry jacks have $2.50 bbq cheeseburgers and other deals / shake to win.
McDonald’s have happy meals, though they have gone up again recently. And regular deals that aren’t that cheap.
KFC have regular deals but nothing really that’s always cheap.
Red Rooster has $5 lunch deals often, some deals. Again nothing that’s always cheap.
Dominos always have coupons but I don’t know anyone who pays full price for dominos..
Subway has $5 6 inches at most places still.
Carla Jr have deals sometimes but not great.
Zambrero doesn’t have anything.

Any other good deals from places?

        2 burritos for yourself?

        Fat Lyf lmao

        • what do you think about those portion size for the Enchiladas? They are bigger than the burritos hey

I buy Restaurant Choice gift card and Good Food card at the discount use at GYG

Subway use Ultimate Eats and Ultimate Everyone now 15% more value on Coles this week

Fish and Chips wins hands down if you can find a decent cheap one. Always too much food for surprisingly little.

Then the discounted value pizzas at Domino’s. Doesn’t get much better than a $5 pepperoni.

KFC is expensive and almost always shit. Don’t know why it’s winning.

I haven’t had take away for over a year though so might be out of date.

i think KFC has 'mad promos' ie 10 dollars for 10 tenders etc

also a KFC box will set you back around 16 bucks for a large usually is a decent feed - i agree you feel like shit after eating it but most fast food does that

    • A lot of fish and chip shops seem to have gone a bit mad. What would have been a minimum chips back in the day is now a ‘large’ and gets well above the $10 mark. By the time you add a couple of bits of fish, you’re looking at around $30, which is really getting up there for such a basic meal.

Not exactly takeaway, but I find the Aldi prepared meals in the fridge section to be pretty decent in the microwave.
$11 tub of curry, use existing frozen veg or buy a bag while there, and even the $2 microwave rice x2 if you want to keep it all quick. Few rounds in the microwave. Usually enough for 2-3 meals instead of some tiny plastic container of takeaway for the same price.

  • Zambrero, expensive but it's the only one that doesn't leave us feeling crook and greasy after/next day, so I count that as value. Would rather swing an extra 10 bucks and not deal with the post-kfc blues.

  • In terms of calorie content $/kj, it would have to be Dominos. But in terms of a complete meat set with a drink, it would be the $5.99/$6.99 1030am to 4pm Mcd deals.

I just avoid buying/trying to find cheap takeaway now. The cost is so high and quality so low.

We typically just cook and eat at home or get takeaway more occasionally from trusted places that are a bit more exxy.

I'd rather have one really good takeaway meal a week for the cost of 1.5-4 crappy ones.

  • Tribe of Judah. For those who know, they know.

Surprised no one has mentioned eatclub.
There's pretty regularly 40% off deals for subway at the odd hours (inbetween lunch and dinner) and also burrito bar in Brisbane. Can get a meatball footlong from subway for example for $6.75.

    • Yup. Eatclub is great, especially for subway.

Dominoes have the best value especially if you make use of coupons. Pizza can store well in the fridge for a couple of days, maybe only KFC is the other fast food place that you can refrigerate

  • Kids meals are good value everywhere.
Gyg has a kids menu and kids meal. I haven’t tried a mini but I think they are the same size but cost less. They did remove everything but the rice and chicken from the burrito now, before they were better.

Costco hotdog + unlimited refill shift drinks for $2

  • Subway lost me when they got rid of the roast beef recently.
Hopefully it will be like when they realised getting rid of the sweet chilli sauce was stupid and got it back

  • Dominos half price Tuesdays, premium supreme thin crust x2 for $18, just enough for me, tbh even cooking at home isnt that much cheaper these days

    • I'm feeling half lucky that I currently have an illness which means I can't eat much expect for little things, cup o soup, or a carrot, etc..

Good for the waist and budget. For a bad reason though.

    • tbh even cooking at home isnt that much cheaper these days

cooking at home costs close to $18/serve-person?

      • Depends on how you see it, if you are a family, it is cheaper to cook, but if your a single or a couple, it might be cheaper to eat out occasionally rather than cook. People don't take their time into consideration, going grocery shopping, preparing and cooking the meal and not to mention the cleaning up and wastage/ spoiled food. Its probably more cost efficient to work OT or spend that time more productively and buy some food along the way. Now if you like cooking as a hobby or for choice/ health reason than I agree, cooking at home is more beneficial.

  • GYG price increases are insane. I now go to Taco Bell a lot more

GyG is horrendously overpriced for what you get and it really doesn't taste that good. Very cunning guy who came up with the concept..

    Only dumbasses go for GYG

    Maccas and KFC wins outright

  • Bloody hell. Nacho Fries at GYG now $15.80.

I think when I started going there they were about $12.

One more time for me I think so I can get my bonus $$ and then I'll use those but that'll be it for me. Almost $16 is just ridiculous.

  • For our fam of 4 - either KFC cheap as chips or Oportos family chicken feed.
Both around the $25 ish mark.

I prefer Oporto's, cause it doesn't leave you feeling all greased up - but with the KFC, we normally have a bit of leftovers.

  • Our go-tos for a cheap and dirty feed are:

Maccas, only if there’s a good deal in the app. We consider feeding both of us for under $15 to be a good deal.

KFC is a good option if you need a lot of food and don’t mind feeling like crap afterwards. Funnily enough, I used to think of KFC as the pricier option compared to the other chains, but that seems to have flipped in the last few years.

Dominoes if you just want a very basic pizza. The $5 pepperonis used to be great. Less so at $7, but also still a decent deal considering some frozen pizzas are more expensive.

Vietnamese places seem to be one of the few takeout options that haven’t shot their prices through the roof. We both get delicious and very filling meals for around $30. Still a little more expensive compared to some other options, but the value is still very good.

With the cost of living going up and food store prices going up I'm it's starting to be majorly beneficial to make food at home these days.

A family of 5, the cost of eating from the major take away food chains cost a fortune.

Maccas app with the odd 20% discount dose help a lot.

  • I had Dominos for the first time in years this week and will not have it again.
I knew it was crab but forgot how bad it was, even paying $9 by using a 40% off voucher it was poor value. A local pizza shop at $20+ a pizza is so much tastier and better value.

Red Rooster lunch time $5.95 meals are usually pretty good depending on the monthly promotion.
KFC can have some decent meals if using the app.
Maccas can occasionally have a decent offer on the app but without a deal it is expensive now, I never really enjoy their food.

I prefer to go to the local pub, can get a steak, chips and salad with a coke for $20. Not as cheap as the take away chains but usually it's only about $5 dearer and worth the extra.

  • I was so disappointed last time I got a burrito from GYG - it was literally 2/3 if not more rice and beans and the remaining was the non meat fillings. Honest 4-6 chunks of chicken. Complete rip off.

    • I can't get barramundi at GYG so doesnt much appeal to me anymore.

When I get a burrito I skip the rice (substitute lettuce for free) and pay for extra meat.

Still a rip-off as they charge extra for guac (if non-vege) and extra for brown rice (which doesn't affect me; I just like complaining).

And they don't have diet coke only coke-zero….. /end rant

  • For smaller orders it's Dominos ($5 pizza) and HJs (Penny Pincher Menu, coupon booklet)

    For larger orders it's KFC.

  • No surprise KFC is leading. Free chips&drink with a docket is hard to beat.

  • Anyone else like me and refuse to eat Fast Food at full price?
Maccas apps, $4 2 cheeseburgers small meal, $1 fries, $4 small coffee + 2 hashs
    KFC app deal/hacks

  • If you are buying maccas for a family, make sure you use their mymaccas app. They always have a 20% off for $40 spend. Which two small meals, and two happy meals will get you most of the way there. A special treat for a fam of 4 for $32 isn't bad.

Plus you can accumulate rewards points pretty easily and chuck in an extra big Mac, fries, apple pie, mcflurry if you need it for free.
