Are There Any Bloggers and Content Creators Here?

Howdy all,

I'm curious to know if there many bloggers and content creators amongst the OzB community? I have been blogging on and off for quite a few years now - mainly on niche topics including family/luxury travel, camping, ebikes & motorcycles, surf/adventure gear, side hustles, tshirts, tech and blogging…my interest is now growing in FIRE, as well as household savings, so they will probably be my next niches.

It'd be great to hear from other Aussie bloggers who have similar interests :)

… as well as household savings, so they will probably be my next niches.

You and about 2 billion other people all saying the same things..

    • Yes, all the money is in crackers. The Polly kind.

  • +2

    What is FIRE?

  • +2

    To what end?

    • Not having to leave the house?
      or Work for someone?
      Free up time for blogging?
      Cash flow?
      Fame?
      Be one of the many?

      Be(h-hmm) different? LOL

      • I mean op specifically. Do they make money out of it? Do they do it for fun?

        • . Must be money in it. The ATO now recognises influencers as a 'thing'.
( So the pool of ( baaaaaaaaaaa) influenced is a bottomless pit)

          How are humans not extinct?

          • @Protractor: There is money in it, I was curious as to whether op is getting some of it.

            • +1

@brendanm: I took this as a serious hint> (though I doubt OP will flash the amount $$)

"my interest is now growing in FIRE"

    • I make a small income from advertising and affiliate links. Certainly enough to retire early on by any means, but it's some extra pocket money. Plus I enjoy writing and taking photos, so it's a bit of a creative outlet for me too.

That said, I do look at blogs as digital real estate….over time as I accumulate more of these micro-revenue generating assets and hopefully they'll amount to something more substantial down the track.

That is, until AI and Voice Search take over the internet and blogs become nothing more than a strange nerdy word again…

You’re so unique and very niched

I've been blogging and making web sites for over 25 years, but not as a "hustle".
I love it when you find the site of someone doing it because they really like it, and hate it when I see the site of someone doing it for clicks.

I wish there was a flag on search engines to only give results from sites with no advertising.

      1000%

I'd go a bit further (and perhaps too far) and lament that today's yoof don't have hobbies and past-times any more, it's all side-hustles that take all the joy out of the creation side of things because "is it successful/getting clicks/getting coin" is now part of the process. It feels like children aren't making Minecraft videos because they want to share Minecraft with others, they want to share Minecraft videos with others.

This is probably 'old man yells at cloud' territory however, because it's not really a situation where you can put the tech genie back in the bottle for a whole generation.

      • What age group are you referring to? I'm in my early thirties and it seems everyone has more hobbies now than ever before with youtube, reddit, etc making it so easy to teach yourself.

        • +1

Side-hustle seems to be tweens to lateish 20s (maybe the same age as the cryptobro core) - perhaps when you're starting in your first career or getting sick of retail-style positions, alternate ways of making cash are the main mindset?

I agree it's easier to pick up hobbies now than ever (as you say, hello Youtube and reddit), it just feels like "side-hustles" are the new unwanted 'improvement' on the concept.

It's no longer "my job gives me money, and for fun I create" but "my job gives me money, but I'm also trying to make money by cracking into this creative market".

Like with the Minecraft videos example, I see a lot more "You can use ChatGPT/AI-art to make and sell X" videos than "Making X with ChatGPT/AI".

    • Aren't you supposed to sell out once you built up your audience.

    • You'd never have found OZB if there was such a search engine.

      • +2

Search engines have options to search for images or news stories, so an option to search for ad-free sites doesn't prevent also searching for sites with ads.

yes i am, and i am very famous

I think 'niche' is ignoring how many 'influencers' + social media there is on almost every single 'lifestyle' topic.
"Plethora of' is a more appropriate term

  • Content create in the sense of YouTube. Ye got a video or two so far in the tech industry. Things like setting up cheap web hosting using your own VPS etc and free media/movie server creation etc type stuff IG.

    • How many views you get on those videos

First videos currently on 22k and slowly growing..

Blogging sounds like something you do on the toilet. In which case I'm a bit of a professional blogger.

  • just started a few months ago a youtube channel about my competition wins/tips for winning purchase competitions..

I've been planning for the last few years about creating a YouTube channel about Procrastinating.

Great idea!, let me know when you create that channel, so I can bookmark it and watch it later….

I'm thinking of quitting my job next year some time and becoming an influencer. AMA.

I was like you know like FOMO about last week's like catch up.

I'll send you a link next year and you can be like my number 1 follower.

I know that not being there would have weighed heavily upon you.

I bought forward an interstate meeting so that work paid for the flight. Imagine my disappointment when I noticed jv using some Spanish olive oil from their local deli to dress the salad. Huge argument ensued when I said it was probably rancid from being on the slow boat from Spain until it got to Aus & jv should buy Aussie made EVOO & not Euro stuff that doesn't even have the EV! Also, you know how you had the goat band that time, well there was zero entertainment this time so I left early & grabbed lunch in the city.

          Don't forget your OzB subscribers

        • Make me number 2!

    • Despite not being a real estate agent you've found a career where you're hated by both your customers, vendors, and society at large. What's next in the evolution of a leach?

I am on youtube a LOT and they mention making money from just having a channel. I think you need 1000 subscribers but not sure.

    • And the best part is, you can get a YouTube channel for free, so it's basically 100% pure profit, right there :)

    • +1

You should make reenactment videos of all your mishaps over the years.

I would subscribe for sure. I'd probably even turn on notifications.

    • they mention making money from just having a channel.

You need videos to run ads, which is where YouTube and you as a creator make money (AdSense).

I think you need 1000 subscribers but not sure

Yes, and 4,000 public watch hours over a year.

  • I may be making a Vimeo video because I have an instruction video I would like to make that I have to charge for

    • What instruction video are you planning to make? Chances are, even if it's super niche, it's already a thing on YouTube.

      • +3

How to find your car keys using Australia's foremost bargain website forum.

        I think it's pretty niche.

      • -1

I may post an introductory video on youtube. But the actual training video wont be free to view.

  • After seeing Brendon O'connell go through another meltdown yesterday… it has taken a while, I'd give it all a miss.

  • i would probably assume that if there are content creators, they would probably use this place as a source of information; therefore probably won't out themselves here as they'll be giving away one of their secrets. If they tell us where they get the info, we don't need them anymore

    • If they tell us where they get the info, we don't need them anymore

      Ominously Orwellian.
When they outlive their usefulness, how do we dispose of them?
