Samsung T7 2TB Portable SSD USB 3.2 (Blue) $166.57 Delivered @ Amazon US via AU

    this is 100 cheaper

    • That's not a flash drive.

      • But it's still very small and performs way faster plus is more reliable when it comes to writes. I mean fit in pocket small.

        • And very hot i feel loke my one will die in 6months in summer lol

          • @javawoo: Well the metal case of the SSD does act as a heatsink so what do you expect.

    • Thanks

These drives are fast but don't support UASP so the performance is limited if you were thinking of using them as a boot drive for an RPi or something

…but the thing is, they are USB flash drives, right ?

So, they already have the most common use-case of just acting as portable storage for files, with low power consumption.

  • Does this solve heat issue?

    • These only are made of plastic so i don't think that there is any heat reduction at all. The memory chips in this probably over heats like there's no tomorrow.

I have the 128GB version of this and it does seem to get a bit warm after only about a minute of use. But it only serves as a very fast Windows 10 install media drive.

    • When I used them as booting disks, they get hot and they stay hot. It is not burning hot, but they get hot. When used to copy files, they get hot but not as much, and once the copy finishes they could down fairly fast. The temp sensor in the drive shows 8c! I don't think it works or HWMonitor and CrystalDiskInfo do not read the sensor properly.

BTW, I am just sharing my experience.

I use a 128gb and a 256gb as Windows 11 and Linux boot drives. They are faster than SATA SSDs use by older laptops. The Windows one is used for light browsing and to RDP to other Windows machines. The Linux does some logging, but since it is not used as workstation, it is not a problem.
With the prices of the Samsung T7 drives coming, they may be a better option. The main advantage of a memory sticks (and this are small) is that they packet friendly, but if that is not important to you, the T7 drives be a cheaper and faster solution.
Also, I use Samsung Fit. It is not as fast as these, but it is really small.

I can't see any this can be faster than a SATA SSD well a SATA 3 SSD on a SATA 3 port.

Also what about long term durability as the NAND in a flash drive is no where near the quality of a good SATA SSD. SSD supports way more writes cycles compared to any flash drive. Flash drives are limited with write and rewrite cycles. So a flash drive is not designed at all to be used as an operating system drive where it's doing heaps of page file write cycles. It will be dead within a year.

      • According to CrystalDiskMark the old SATA SSD speed was around 350. The 128GB USB Stick we got 420. It felt faster booting. Also these drivers come as

Your second point is valid. That is why I mention that a Samsung T7 drive will be a better option, assuming that it need to be an external drive. These drives come as pSSDs same than the T7s. This information comes from HWInfo and HWMonitor, so it may be a SSD after all!

When I got them, SSDs were still expensive and with USB we just carry it and use any machine that I had access to the BIOS.

  • I have an older one of these. Unless they improved the slider design, these things are flimsy. The slider will break and the stick will no longer extend and become unuseable. Hopefully they changed the design since then. But it looks identical to the one I got about 10 years ago.

    • No, the design hasn't changed all these years.

      • caveat emptor then
