WARNING: The PCB board is soldered onto the hard drive so you won't be able to rip the hard drive out and place it in other devices e.g. notebooks, consoles, desktops etc.

However, for external storage it's a pretty good deal. :)

    • -8

Why would you bother ripping it out.
      You'd get a cheaper WD 1TB HDD anyway !

WD Green for $80 and Blue for $86 on staticice

      • +2

        2.5" 1TB for $80??? where? show me?
        I will buy x 10.

        • -4

          OK, wasn't aware its a 2.5"
          My bad !

    • +1

Damn, I was hoping to buy it and swap my laptop drive with it (and end up with the laptop's drive in the case).

    • +1

ok..Internet plans go up to 1TB for less. Bring on 2TB, 3TB real by now.

  • Does anyone know if there is password protection available on this drive?

    • +1

Nope, the WD elements does not have security.

Just use TrueCrypt to encrypt and password protect your portable drives. It's free/open-source. I use it, and it's and used by a lot of other IT professionals I know. Go to the TrueCrypt website to check it out.

      http://www.truecrypt.org

This deal looks pretty good and it's very tempting to buy one, so it's a +1 vote from me.

      • Only problem with TrueCrypt is that you need admin rights to use it so you can't rely it on it for if you are on a public pc or a university pc for instance. You might need to get to something in your drive in a situatino like that.

  • too cheap… feel like buying a few… must stop myself

  • Pretty annoyed. Parramatta JB had this listed for $139 today. Asked to price match Officeworks for $119 and the guy gave it to me straight away without even bothering to check. Now I come home and find out it was meant to be $99?! spewing…

    • +3

Go back and return it. That is, if you haven't opened it

    • If you go back to the store they will refund difference for you. Sorry to hear that this happened, hopefully it was just a misunderstanding and the salesperson was oblivious to the fact that they were reduced and didn't intentionally keep you in the dark about the sale. If you feel it was the latter, definitely ask for the manager and hopefully they will be able to sort something out for you.

    • The HDD is also $99 at Officeworks.

  • difference between this and the passport ?

    http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Passport-Portable-Driv…

    • did some googling.

and found elements is a slightly bigger
      doesnt feature auto backup crap

      and that's about it…

FFS…Just bought the GoFlex 750gb for $78 today….This one is better value (by $3).

    • +1

      oops

  • +1

Any idea how long they will stay at this price?

  • This or the Hitachi touro?

    • +1

      Having the same dilemma!

    • This hdd can't be taken out according to stoudout. What about toura?

  • my WD Elements 1TB connector came loose (9 mths old), can't access drive anymore. contacted OfficeWorks and was told to contact manufacturer directly for warranty. ended up raising a RMA with WD and send the HDD back to Malaysia for warranty. :( now, i'm without a portable HDD.

do jb offers 1-to-1 replacement instead of sending it back to M'sia for warranty?

    • Has to be done through manufacturer, thats the downside of WD. Sending to Malaysia will cost around $30 just for RMA.
I had a 320gb mypassport portable drive that died on me, tried to RMA. But the postage costs was a letdown, I gaveup and decided it wasn't worth it to ship a 320gb usb drive for RMA.

      • yup, costs me $25 to ship it. it's just inconvenience, thought it will be a 1-to-1 swap in AUS.

      • It doesn't have to be done through the manufacturer, see below.

    • Do you know if the replacement they send you will have all of your data?

      • +1

No, every hard drive I've ever seen has a warranty which explicitly disclaims all responsibility for any data loss.

They will send you a new (or possibly re-manufactured) hard drive, and it will be blank. If your hard drive would normally come with pre-installed backup or security utilities, they will be installed, but none of your old data will be there. It won't be the same hard drive you sent them either.

The hard drive you sent them will probably be dumped in the trash, so think about what private data is in that drive before you send it back. If you want to be sure that data/photos/videos never falls into the wrong hands, maybe you won't want to send it back. Another reason why whole-disk encryption, like TrueCrypt, is a good idea.

    • +4

I thought under Australian Consumer Law, the retailer had to deal with all warranty issues in the first year…

      • +9

You are right, but is isn't limited to one year. From the ACCC booklet:
"Because each sale is a contract between the buyer and the seller, consumers are entitled to insist that the seller provide them with a remedy, even if a problem is due to a manufacturer's fault. It is a breach of the act for sellers to mislead consumers about this right - for example, by claiming that they can do nothing and that the consumer must contact the manufacturer for a remedy."

Also, it is the seller who returns the faulty item to the manufacturer, not you. The seller pays the shipping costs.

The booklet is available for download from this ACCC webpage, the above quoted text is on page 15:
        http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/322947

Or if that link dies, google "accc Warranties and refunds—a guide for consumers and business"

        • bugger, i know this time. too bad, i have already sent the drive back. perhaps next time (touch wood)

Officeworks do replace one for another. I'd WD 2.5" Passport a year back & wasn't picked up by computer, went to Parramatta Officeworks & the guy straight away gave me the new one. Ask them, if not, tell that others are doing..if happens next time..(hope it'll not happen to anyone..!!)

  • is WD better than seagate? it seems to be more expensive..

    • Everyone has their own experiences and opinions. I've had a couple of seagate problems but never any wd problems.

  • +3

Just went to Officeworks, they beat it by 5%, so I paid $94.05! Even better :)

  • Me? I'm new here, not sure how, a little help?

      • Sorry there is a 24 hour ban for posting receipts & I only just joined today.
Take my word for it, I showed the gentleman at the store the ozbargain post & he was happy with that. I was surprised he didnt want to see the JB Hifi add but he didnt so I was pleased…

Officeworks' Elizabeth st store in Melbourne CBD was able to quickly pricematch, for under $95. No stock on the shelf, but there was some stock under front counter.

  • some stores are still listing as $137

just refer them to their website :)

  • +1

I just bought 2xHDDs. Store adversiting price $137 but when they ll scan it ll come up as $99.

  • got mine for $94 absolutely fantastic 2.0 and 3.0 works with just one cable

  • +2

If anyone in Melbourne CBD is interested, I popped in to the OfficeWorks on corner of King Street and Collins Street and they had 4 of these on the shelf.

Sadly, I couldn't help myself and bought one. Price matched with JB Hifi -5%, so that's a grand total of $94.05 (that my wife is going to make me regret paying when I get home)

It seems they have had quite a few people buying these at that store as the girl at the counter said to her manager that she had price-matched the same thing a few times today and asked if she still needed approval to price-match for other customers. (He said 'no', in case you're interested).

Lastly from me on this subject, if you want to encrypt the drive then use one of two things:

    1. If you primarily use Microsoft machines and have Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise at home or at work then you can use Microsoft encryption called 'BitLocker'. It's pretty easy to use. You can use any version of Windows 7 to unlock the drive, but you need 'Ultimate' or 'Enterprise' to do the initial encryption.

    2. If you don't have access to BitLocker then use TrueCrypt (as I posted yesterday). You can encrypt the whole drive, or create an encrypted 'container'. For example, you can create an 800GB container for your encrypted (private) stuff and leave what's left over for unencrypted data. TrueCrypt is portable so you can have the executable on the drive with the container so you can run it on any PC. You'd need to be a little more technically minded to set up and use TrueCrypt compared to BitLocker IMHO, but it's a great application to use.

Anyway, there are merits for using either method so do the research to see what suits your needs. For this, Google is your friend.

  • The sales guy at officeworks qv does not want to price match at all. What a dick. He says jb website is showing $127 and not $99.

    • show him on your smart phone that it is $99 or even better just simply print the web page off selling at $99

      • i did, even show him the receipt. he says that was yesterday deal and even mention ozbargain. he show me what's jb hifi web site is selling now. guess i will have to visit another officeworks.

        • Isn't the price on JB Hifi's website still $99?

        • yup, his monitor is showing JB with $127, pretty sure it's the old price, well… guess it's a lost customer to him (imo).

        • Ask the ow staff to ring one of the jb hi store to verify the price. Last time I got a Seagate goflex 1tb, on special at one jb store price matched. I ask the ow staff to ring that store to verify the price.

        • +2

That's because he's looking at the wrong item. What he was looking at was the WD Elements SE drive
          http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

The drive on sale is the WD Elements (non SE)
          http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

          Both 1TB
          Both portable
          Different prices
          Does the same job

        • ah… btw, what's the difference between the SE and non-SE? both looks the same to me

  • +1

Got mine at OfficeWorks Werribee for $94.05 without any hassle.

  • +1

got mine at officeworks Sydney (Clarence St) price match and 5% off. thanks

  • The Good Guys at capalaba wouldn't price match, says it was below their cost

  • officeworks keswick (adelaide) has updated the price to $99 :(

    • OW offers free delivery for orders over 55

  • officeworks website now has the hdd listed at $99 as well
    OW link

just got free same day delivery :)

    • Did they deliver to your home or did you pick it up from your local post office?
