I believe most of you here are familiar with this one by now. I've seen a lot of unsolicited feedback which has similar experience to me in that this thing is tough, is decently fast and the brushless system means it is very efficient; i.e. it has great battery life.

Of course here is my full review which is probably my most popular review to date. Note, it's an old fashioned picture and text review so you can check it out at your own pace without sound etc: https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/hbx-16889a-pro-review…

I've affiliated myself to my website (QuadifyRC), I'm not an employee of Banggood. Just trying to pass on a deal as I know this is a good price for this one.

  • Bought one of these for my son a few weeks ago (paid $160 with two batteries). It's Awesome, very well built, as rugged as the reviews say and super fast. Only complaint is the charging is a bit weird/poorly designed.

    • +1

Yeah The USB charger are barely passable. I definitely recommend a better charger, even a second hand hobby grade one you can flick on when you are done. Extends the battery life and much safer too.

    • +1

what is wrong with the charger?

      got a pic?

      • Its this tiny flimsy usb key sized with a connector. The lights on it flash randomly I don't even understand when it's charging and when it isn't. Some times it flashes different but still charges. No idea!

      • +1

Mainly that it's not a balance charger and has no storage charge function. Also super slow.

        • The included charger does balance the pack. It has a single output but quickly alternates between cells.

          • @Stevesie76: In my experience it does a poor job of balancing. Alternating between cells doesn't mean that it's balancing them.

        • Hey, I'm very interested in this deal but the charger has sort of put me off. Would you say buying a new charger (you recommended one above) will resolve the issue? Also, is it fairly simple to charge since im not very tech savvy.

          • @sulmar: The ISDT chargers are easy to use. You'll have no problems if you get a decent charger.

          • @sulmar: Don't be put off by the comments, the charger is fine to get you started. It'll charge the battery in about 2-3hrs which will give you around 20min runtime, best if you have 2x batteries. Upgrading the charger is a good idea if you get into the hobby, but I must admit I still use the included charger on occasion if I'm packing light. These cars are great fun, take a beating and seriously impressive performance for the money. Quadify RC's website is a great resource for maintenance and upgrade advice

            • @super hans: Well said on the charger. I only recommend getting one as an upgrade if you get into the hobby a bit more. Thanks for the kind comments as well.

            • @super hans: I agree that a different charger isn't necessary straight away. Using it long term will definitely shorten the life of your lipos, though.

              • @wombat81: Thanks for the recommendations, bought one of the Q6 nano's too :)

Best price I found was Amazon UK via Amazon AU for ~65 delivered. Bit annoyed at myself that I recently discarded an old laptop with chargers, could have definitely hacked them apart.

              • @wombat81: Cool.

                Thanks!

            • @super hans: Thanks for that!

So the extra battery, where do you buy it from? Is there an option when ordering the product or do you purchase it separately?

Really keen to get this for myself lol.

              • @sulmar: Looks like there is a 2-battery version of the 16889A pro on sale on the Banggood app for $149.70 - good deal. Just note these are LiPo batteries, excellent energy density but due to their chemistry you need to take some precautions like storing in a fireproof LiPo bag (cheap & available on banggood, Ali, ebay etc). Alternatively, search those retailers for a 2S LiIon, a 1200mAh or less should fit inside this chassis - they don't quite have the energy density of LiPo but are a very stable and don't require the extra safety precaution. This car will use a Deans T-connector for the battery.

Nice find quadify. Great price. Love my Flyhal fc600 which is the same car.

    • +2

Cheers mate, all 3 of my boys have tried to kill this one and it's still going strong

      • Any tips on preserving the shell?

        • On big cars duct tape and shoe goo but that costs more that a replacement shell.

        • Not really. Wrap it in duct tape?

  • Which battery can I buy with this as a back up battery?

  • +1

These are amazing! Bought one for Mr9 and one for myself last Xmas. We run them at a couple bmx pump tracks and they take an absolute beating. No issues at all.

Order NO: 111936362 if someone can help me to refund

Be careful if banggood sent the wrong item…you could never get refund back…

I returned goods with tracking number "Customer has returned the order with tracking R444963042800308006120909 and showing "FERNTREE GULLY VIC, Delivered back to Sender" kindly check and help.

then Banggood said they returned it back to me after they received the goods.

I asked them the tracking number.

Banggood said "The package was returned back by customs, we don't know which shipping company did you use or the tracking number, please ask the shipping company you use to return the package for help.

and keep bouncing the same massage

    No refund

    • +3

Initiate a credit card charge back with your bank, or PayPal dispute.

    • similar happened to me, such a pain in the butt to get a refund, i had to keep disputing in paypal and list out everything while banggood just kept giving generic copy paste messages.

      • Seems their accounts dept knows how to get Banging good big time!

  • Pretty good deal. Thanks @QuadifyRC!

I have one and have bashed it around heaps.

    • +2

My pleasure. So many people end up with crap cars and get put off the experience that I'd rather they get the right one.

      • +1

Appreciate all the info I see you put in to these posts Quadify.
I'm looking to get an RC for my soon to be 5yo, but I think something like this would be way too fast, anything you would recommend?

        • +2

This car has a feature called throttle dual rate, basically a dial where you can turn down the top speed. Then you can turn it up when it's your turn. He'll eventually catch up but by that stage hopefully isn't crashing into ankles.

        • I have a 4yo and this same model and he loves it. Started him off on the slowest setting to get used to it, and now he bashes it around at about half speed (which is plenty fast!).

  • I have one of these and when landing big jumps one of the shocks sticks in and you have to pull hard to seperate, any quick fix? Apart from that these are awesome and well fast enough

    • +2

Sounds like your shock may have emptied itself of the oil and/or you may have bent the shaft. Different car but here are some details on refilling the oil. You can straighten the shaft with a hammer/anvil if you are careful

  • +5

I cant wait till my little man grows up so i can buy one of these for myself him

    • +1

Everything seems to match up to me, I’d say so.

    • +4

There's this one too for a bit less that looks identical. $106.20 with Ebay Plus

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334931267688

      • Yea looks the same, already bought from banggood. Can you cancel?

      • Gone upto $124 now

    • @QuadifyRC does this look like the same model? It's heaps cheaper..

  • Love your reviews! Reckon you'll do a review for the HBX 2996A? :)

    • +1

I'm falling so behind on reviews at the moment it's not funny. Probably won't be looking at that one sorry. I have a few MJX models to review and they have been really good.

  • Thanks Quadify. Needed a new toy :) Now I just need to find a deal on a charger.

  • Reminder that this only comes with a 30day warranty. See link below. Bought one of the other RC cars (https://au.banggood.com/Eachine-EC30B-Several-Battery-RTR-1-…) not long ago and it lasted a couple of months and now won't turn on properly/fully anymore. :(

    https://www.banggood.com/index.php?com=help&t=questionCatego…

    • That's a shame! I bought the EC30B and is still going strong! Just replaced some parts from bashing as expected.

  • got one of these three years ago and still going like new. grabbed another one as a gift. Thanks for the OP!

    • Did you buy a new charger or is the one that comes in the original packaging good enough?

      • same charger. no issues so far

        • Alright, thanks

  • Are there any big sized RC car which you would recommend? Thanks

    • Big? Give this one a go.

      • need an off roader, mate:)

  • Hi OP!
Thanks for sharing and thanks for the review site. Random question - do you have a RC recommendation for a two-year-old that is still fun to play with for me? :) Something not to expensive and a decent battery (or battery pack easy to swap out)?

    • +1

It was commented earlier that this car can have its top speed reduced to avoid damage/injury and then you can crank it back up when you want to have a play

    • +1

Don't think there is a car that's fast enough for you, and safe/durable enough for a 2yo. I'd get a crawler for kids that young

    • +2

As CH said, go crawler. This one is just over $50 at the moment and is very good. Slow and powerful plus it has a freakin' awesome hilux body https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/wpl-c24-waterproof-ed…

  • Theres another listing with 4 batteries for $10 more, better?

    • Do you have a link to this?

Keen to purchase this option if it's the same model with 4 batteries

  • 1/16 too small for me- 1/10 better

this here is the bomb, just add a battery of your choosing
    https://rlaarlo.com/products/1-10-metal-version-brushed-supe…

    • +2

      Horses for courses for me.
The ability to take this anywhere and bash it is part of it's appeal. IMO something like an onroad requires access to a nearby set of netball courts or the like to have a blast. Even in a asphalt carpark, depending on the presence of stones/rocks, you can really get unstuck and do some damage.

I'd also say that 1/16th allows you to bash without significant risk of breakage because there's limited mass. Once you go to 1/10th basher, the mass increases and going "full send" will often result in breakage (and thus, more dollars) if you land it without care.

      Just my 2c though…

      • +2

I do like that Rlaarlo @MeanBaldy mentioned, In fact, if I had the time or budget, I'm quite keen on the Rlaarlo AM-X12, however, I'm totally on the same page regarding pick-up and go practicalities and longevity sensibilities.

I will add that something I found with 1/16th scale and their shorter wheelbases is that it's quite difficult, potentially impossible for it to get dialled-in to run perfectly straight, especially at different speeds. Not a deal breaker, for sure. More of a mild annoyance.

Finally, a shout out to @QuadifyRC, his website, as well as their FB groups. Such a wealth of knowledge freely shared. Thanks, mate.

  • +1

Bit of a sidetrack but just as the HBX 16889a pro was my favourite car in 2021, the MJX Hyper Go 14301 is my favourite in 2023 albeit as an onroad basher. Here is my review: https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/mjx-hyper-go-14301-14…

If are interested in one they are on flash sale for the same period for USD115.99 / AUD172.48 for the 14302 (Lancia Delta Integrale) version.

  • +1

Its a good price but maybe better spending a little more for the TRC-Q901 (Monster Truck body) or TRC-Q902 (Desert Truck body)

    https://www.rchobbies.com.au/tornado-rc-1-16-brushless-4wd-r…

    or

    https://www.rchobbies.com.au/tornado-rc-1-16-brushless-4wd-r…

Its faster than the HBX, the HBX is 45kmh where as this is 52kmh
Even though your paying more, it is a better model, its faster, bigger motor, you have a choice between two bodies and two different colour schemes, its local stock from an aussie retailer plus its also got a local supplier/distributor so easier to deal with warranty issues if any, parts are generally available all the time.

I have had a few cars from the Tornado RC range and they have been excellent, strong and sturdy, no issues except regular wear and stuff., kids love em

  • this or the FC600 OzBargain?

    • They're literally the same car with a different body. So get this one since it's cheaper.

  • +1

Can you get spare parts for it? Also can you buy upgraded parts or steel and aluminium alternatives for the plastic originals. I had some HobbyKing cars a few years ago for my son and I to play with and all spare parts were available. RC cars get hammered basically.

    • +1

The 16889a pro Is the upgraded version of the 16889 (brushed) and 16889a (brushless). You'll see in my review all the things they upgraded which is why it's so tough. If you changed the plastic parts on this car to metal it would weaken

    • +1

As quadify says, parts are available, but you won't need much. These cars are tough. "Upgrading" to metal parts is generally a bad idea. You want plastic components to absorb shock in a crash. Metal parts transfer shock to more vulnerable drive train components which will end badly.

  • +1

This thing is a beast! Got mine on Monday after buying off one of the eBay links. A definite step up from the wltoys 12427 I have.
