Hey guys,

This is a great price for what is probably the best entry level FDM printer. I've purchased one to use as a dedicated TPU rig.

Enjoy

Where can I get the files to print the Mechagodzilla? 🦖

  • +4

I've got this printer, paid far more, and its freaking awesome.

Note that the Neptune 4 Pro is also out now, features a faster print speed, and is about ~450 delivered from Elegoo directly. If you have the money to splurge I'd recommend going with the Pro 4, but thats my opinion.

    • Hmmm I bought the Creality Ender-3 V2 Neo on sale from Jaycar a few days ago, but am yet to open. You reckon its worth the extra ~$170?

      • I have ender 3 v2 neo

My suggestion, get something with relatively good speed.

        Do a speed comparison.

        • +1

They're all bed slingers, minor differences in movement speed won't make much difference as you're so limited in Y movement. Using a larger nozzle and taller layer heights will make a huge difference.

      • +3

Depends what you want to use it for really? The v4 will print faster as it supports the Klipper firmware, but if you're just doing the occasional print of fun stuff, its not going to make too much of a difference quality wise. Having a v3 I've decided to pass on the V4 as although its got a full metal extruder and prints faster, I just dont need those functions for hobby grade prints.

        • Would there be any difference in the strength of the prints between the V3 and the V4. Looking at getting one of these to print tool skins and battery holders?

          • @fraid knot: I don't think so. The strength would come from the material used and the print settings, not the printer itself. Although the v4 can go up to 300 degrees while the v3 can only do 260. Being able to go to 300 allows you to print with carbon nylon which is regarded as one of the most durable materials you can print with.

            • @Intoxicoligist: Cheers, I've played around with a Flashforge Creator Pro and also Inventor printer at work but never got decent strength out of them with ABS or PLA.

  • sovol sv06 vs this?

    • +1

Maybe for the same money. This is a steal.

    • +3

Sv06 💯. It keeps going on sale regularly for $320, don't pay more than that.

Sv06 is a much better printer for the extra you are going to spend.

Linear rods, all metal hotend, auto x-align, open source firmware (even stock has most Marlin features already e.g. linear advance), easy to install klipper for fast printing

Sv06 lacks filament runout sensor(cheap to install) and a monochrome display (an advantage if you install klipper)

It's basically a mk3 with enhancements but a lot cheaper.

    225 x 225 x 280mm printing size

  • How easy are these to use? Like I've watched 3D printing before but I would be a noob when it comes to actually doing anything. Are they relatively user friendly?

    • +1

They are easy enough to get up and running, but troubleshooting them when things aren't going right can be an involved process. And it's not unusual if you end up having to take apart something in your 3D printer to get it working correctly again

This model is considered one of the easiest beginner models to setup and use.
Basic usage and maintenance is not complex but there is quite a lot to learn. You may have problems that are hard to identify but easy to solve once you know.
Of course impossible to say without knowing you but I say go for it if you're interested and have the spare time.

      • @aaronsd @flopsy thanks! I appreciate the replies.

I'd recommend this for beginners. It's my first FDM printer and I fully disassembled the print head on Thursday to fix a clog (caused by me being impatient and not properly unloading the filament). Took a few hours, mostly because I wasn't familiar with it. Would take me about 20 minutes now I know what I'm doing. Went back together easy, and worked properly.

As the others have mentioned, this is a great beginner 3d printer. Auto bed levelling is going to be your best friend as often bed levelling is your worst enemy, then first layer adhesion.

  • I have 2 of these, the first one cost me $430 when first released, bloody awesome printer

  • Any suggestions on a good beginner filament to buy to use with this? I assume PLA is a good starting point? Thanks

    • +1

      Yes. PLA.

I've not found any significant differences between brands, have defaulted to eSun for most purchases when in was overseas, but there are some local manufacturers too.

This is listed as Best 3D Printer for Beginners 2023 https://www.tomshardware.com/best-picks/best-3d-printers

  • How long would it take to print that godzilla thing?

    • Scale all the files down by the same amount and print a small one first so you know that it works before doing the full scale one. It looks like there's 100+ parts in it.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, got one.

Bought the 1kg eSUN PLA+ filament from Amazon for $29.28. What are the alternatives? Thanks

    • +2

Check out inkstation.com.au, seems to be the best price i can find if you want a good source of colours..

HOWEVER, if you want cheap, you cant go past the Elegoo Money saver project, you buy 10 reels for a major discount.
works out to $15 a reel ( free postage) to which I cant find anything remotely close to this price.
But you cant choose individual colours, it's either ALL Black OR 4x Black, 2x Red, 2x Blue, 2x White.

      • Thanks mate, that's great info. The knowledgeable guys and gals on ozbargain never cease to amaze me

      • Just checking the price now is 120 USD for 10x rolls. Has this gone up or was it the same price in July when you posted?

  • Does it come with any local warranty?
