Super, Retiring and Working Casual

Can someone (age 63, Registered Nurse in a public hospital) retire from a 4 day a week part time position (for 5 years), access super (move it to a retirement account), and after a break, work for the same of different employer as a casual? Thanks folks.

If there's a requirement for you to retire, it's your intention to retire at the time. Nothing stops you from going back to work after accessing the funds.

The declaration (for release) that you have no intention to return to work can be a bit daunting for some people. I know heaps that have retired from the APS at 54y 11months of age (because it was significantly better financially because of the way the fund was structured) - that had full intention of returning to work. I had 2 colleagues that took the 54/11 retirement purely because of the financial benefit and they came back to work with me a little while later.
    Go for it !

Teachers do it all the time. Check your super as to whther there is a difference in payout between retirement and plain old quitting. Some old grandfathered funds have clauses that pay a golden handshake on quitting but NOT on retirement.

  • Pretty sure you can access your super and go back no issue - but i would talk to a professional ideally from your super fund to confirm the metrics
