What Do You Do at Night before Bed?

What do you do at night before bed?

Looking for a relaxing hobby to fill in the nights and thought I'd throw it out here for some more ideas. Looking for something that…

• Isn't too noisy - kid will be sleeping
• Cost sustainable - Lego is amazing but I'll go broke building something new that is fun/challenging every week
• Non/computer or screen related - between work and recent post grad studies I have spent way too much time in front of a screen already.
• Non-academic - considered learning a language but I really can't handle anything studious or requiring a lot of reading for a while
• Relaxing / low energy - nothing that is going to get me so amped up before bed I can't sleep.
• Bonus if I can enjoy a dram or two while partaking

The sort of things I'm considering trying…
• Model building
• Figurine painting
• Building a ship in a bottle
• Knitting (wife knits)
• Painting
• Carving

For some context I've just finished high level post grad studies, so for a few years been working the standard ~40 hour week + 25-30 hours of study. Usual routine after putting the kid to bed was to hit the books and assignments. While a month of lazy streaming and gaming has been fun, I feel like it's going rot my brain inside out if that's all I do every night.

  • Learn to play chess really well!

Not on the pc or tablet, but get a computerised chess board where you can play physically set up and play on an actual chess board and learn from it.
It's lifelong game of skill that you can eventually pass down to your children or grandchildren and have that connection with them.

  • Hold your breath for as long as possible beating your record over and over again. Cheap, no noise, satisfying.

  • Yeah we just try the hot quiet sex. Or tik tok quietly next to each other, then the slighlty more tired quiet sex.

  • I recommend a 3d printer, they are crazy cheap now and fun to tinker with. I enjoy browsing for models to print, designing a random thing for the house. Then hit print and get to wake up and see how it went.

I have mine set up inside, I'm just avoiding printing with any nasty stuff.

  • If you like board games, there are some you can play solo, with your wife, or friends as well.

What's more, some of them are miniature heavy and you can spend hours painting them.

I find the YouTube painting tutorials almost as relaxing as the painting itself.

  • Spank it like it owes me Money.. 👍

There is a scene with a talent contest in Road to Utopia. It is one of the Bob Hope and Bing Cosby Road movies. One of the other contestants was a monkey.

Chester Hooton : [playing an accordion accompanying Duke in a talent show] You know, I never knew I could play one of these.
Duke Johnson : You could beat the monkey alone.

Not sure how they got it past the censors.

  • Just keep trying new hobbies and ideas until you find something that you like. Go down youtube rabbit holes first to learn about new things to try. I've gone through so many different activities and learnt so much by doing this. I like to learn different things, so youtube is my source and I just spring from there.

  • Play “Touch my body” by Mariah Carey

Have you ever thought of making things out of leather? It's alot easier than you might expect.
You can make something that will last as something for yourself or a gift. I find it very satisfying interacting daily with something I've made custom to my needs. Also stuff I've made like my belt holder for multitool have lasted for years. And the one time it broke I was able to repair it. Also I've repaired quite a few nice pairs of shoes.

As a first project you can get kits that give instructions, design, leather and all the tools you need.

When you want to take it to the next level you can get tool sets with cheap versions of most tools for $65 on Amazon. Then upgrade tools as you become more experienced and find you need/want a better version of something.

And if you aren't interested in design you can get plans on places like etsy:

Doomscrolling for news stories on threats from climate change and AI.

    Wonderful and relaxing bedtime routine.

  • Buy a 3-D printer - unlimited models to build and play with - and to Design your own.

  • Masturbate, not every night though. Sometimes earlier.

  • Read

  • Read. Best thing I ever started. I read mix of novels and non-fiction. Reading a sci-fi series now and also a book on renewable energy transition.

  • Watching pokemon nuzlocke

  • Read, especially something a bit challenging. I'm currently reading Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations. I've read bits of it before for uni but now I'm doing the whole book. Published in 1776. An incredible man. An incredible read. Very hard work in parts but he understood economics before it was really a subject. He railed against the ideas of big government, socialism, corporate monopolies, duopolies etc, the things that are hurting us today. At the core of his beliefs is that working people striving to better themselves and to provide benefit society as a whole. Thought provoking stuff.

  • Do crosswords with wife. It is great hobby that improves your relationship as well.

  • I do play some games on my pc like Valorant. Though i play for fun, but it gets toxic time to time xD
