Google TV, Android TV, Smart TV (LG, Sony, Samsung etc) LED, OLED, QLED, Full Array, Mini Led. What to Choose ?

Hello lovely people,

I am in the market for a new TV with a screen size 55" - 65" with a budget of under $2k

I have tried looking online on various sellers like JB, HN etc but the sheer number different words like LED, OLED, QLED, Full Array, Mini Led is getting me confused.
Plus the choices like google tv, smart tv etc is making things difficult to get my head around.

My requirements are for a TV which will be sitting in a well lit area. Usage will mainly be for content consumption on platforms like youtube, netflix, amazon etc. gaming maybe but nothing super hardcore.

I want to buy something which is recent to future proof myself.

What are your recoomendations ?

Thank you to everyone

Go to shop and have a look at what works for you and your space at home would be a good start.
what works for me and 1249023420394 OzB's may not work for u

      • Go to HN or JB and tell them you only got $2k, whats the best deal ?

    • agree just ask your wallet, then pick the closest one.

Smart TV and google TV just mean they have apps which you can load (or are already loaded) to stream (a netflix app or a channel 9 app etc). Some run on google, some run on proprietary software (samsung), it doesnt really matter too much although a few are a bit clunky (chinese brands).

Find the panel type you think suits you best. Then go and play around with them in the store, see how fast they swap between apps or channels, see if you like the colour. If you cant decide, Samsung is a good default for most people who arent overly obsessed by blacks. Which I'm guessing you arent.

  • QLED from Samsung seems like a good option - not too expensive, quite thin so looks good too. Samsung is mkt leader in QLEDs so a bit more expensive than cheaper LG and hisense. decent QLED 65inch could come around 1400 - u could get a decent soundbar and all in 2k.

OLED with google/android smarts so they have a good chance of being supported for more than 5 mins.

You didn't mention HDR, but that will make as much difference (not all HDR are equal).

  • You're prob looking at oled or qled if you're in a well lit area (artificial lighting or sunlight) as viewing from different angles the picture should stay the same to the naked eye.

Buy a matte screen instead of a gloss screen

If blackness matters to you, I forgot which oled or qled has the better richness of black but I am sure you can compare.

Given the "well lit room" go for QLED or MiniLED technology.

If you always watch with a light on, then just go the best QLED you can afford.

If you do like to turn off the lights at night, go for the best MiniLED you can afford.

Smart TV will NEVER be future proof past around 5 years. You might get a couple more years support from Android/Google TV than you get from the more proprietary options, but it's not guaranteed.

  • so others have shared their opinion and I'd like to add on
    - If it's a well-lit area, you'd want to go with Samsung QLED and it's the best bang for buck. get Samsung QLED Q90-Q95 if you can, Q90B costs around 1400-2000 for 55-65 inch, and you can't go wrong with it.
    - Don't need to worry about smart tv or google tv, the tv itself is more important.

  • What are your recoomendations ?

    Soony

  • From doing some brief research when I was looking at tvs recently, google tv is shit with heaps of bugs

    • ive got google tv on my new tcl tv and its great, super responsive, fast, no bugs whatsoever. maybe you were reading about google tv from in the past because its been great now

I just want TV that tastes like real TV.

  • 65" and under $2k, I would be looking at the TCL C845 when it goes on sale. MiniLED and google TV, but is a VA panel which means limited viewing angles. If you need wide viewing angles look at the Samsung QN90B or QN90C as it's a IPS panel but I think the QN90B are sold out now.

if your budget is under 2k i definitely wouldn't go for the entry level samsung (qn90b or c) or entry lg tv's as you'd be better off going for something like a higher model TCL c845 65 inch which has good hardware and picture quality and still has quite good viewing angles that a samsung, lg, sony tv has but without the inflated price.
i picked up the tcl c835 65 inch not long ago (now discontinued and updated with c845) and its a beast, super bright, great picture with the mini led technology, and great for gaming aswell compared to an entry level samsung or lg that aren't great for gaming. also google tv operating system is great and fast to use
highly recommend the tcl c835/c845. and you should be able to pick it up for around $1700-1800 here (https://www.appliancecentral.com.au/65c845-tcl-65-inch-mini-…).
Jb hifi may even price match it to save you the delivery cost and wait.
Also gives you a bit leftover to grab a good soundbar if you were considering it

    • Im sorry but tcl can not hold a candle to the QN90 from Samsung (which is definitely not an entry level tv).

  • Decent deal on Sony oled (uses LG panel). If the room it is in is not overly bright, would recommend going oled. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/790248
