Popcorn Maker Air Popper

Those hot air popcorn poppers used to be plentiful and cheap but I can't for the life of me find one at the moment!

Everyone has an Air Fryer nowadays, so they just use that.

    • Thank you. But doesnt that look cheap and nasty for $40? Way everything is going now i guess.

It's not the $10 that is should be, considering its only a hot air gun and some plastic. However shops are no longer interested in price competition it seems and this price is fairly comparable

You posted that they used to be cheap, then complained that they are cheap?
Perhaps put your desired price point in the description to help people help you

If something is cheap and nasty it should be priced accordingly

Yeh looks about the same as what Kmart were selling for $10.

Plenty of second hand ones on Marketplace for $10 or less. At least one less that goes to landfill, for now anyway.

        • Yeah its looking like i might need to do that.

@bargain huntress: If it gives you any peace of mind about that option: I've been using a second-hand air popper that I bought for $10 from Cash Converters for the last 15 years. It's still going strong.

There's a small risk of fire using an airfryer. A popped kernel could lodge itself onto the heating element so if you use the air fryer, keep an eye on it.

There are still a number of air poppers on the market but they're all generic brands now, the big brands dropped them ages ago. Not sure where you're looking that you can't find any at all.

    • Could use the roller basket attachment if they have the oven style one, wonder if that'd work lol

Tried this in my Anko rotating steel basket and nothing popped. Had it at max (200C) for 8 minutes too.

Actually found the Coles frozen oven fries weren't great using the steel drum either. Took a long time and they weren't very crunchy in the end.
Had quicker and better results arranging them as a single layer on a mesh tray and flipping them after 5 minutes.

        • Yeah ive never had great chips using my Buffalo AF (oven style) using the basket, always ends up soggy and some wouldnt be fully cooked.

I bought the Instant Vortex recently in the Prime deal and my husband tried it out with sweet potato chips and omg, best chips ever. Guess we'll just be using the Buffalo for 'wet' stuff like chicken.

          • @MeesusEff: Ironically wanted that one because it had the rotating tumbler.

Still, the occasional frozen food is quick to do. It's also the only way I bake tortilla pizzas and (also with flour tortillas) lazy-guy lahmacun.

        • My old air fryer never got hot enough to do good chips (supposed max was 200C but I don't think it got there).

Got the Ninja Foodi Grill a little while back when Kmart was clearing them and that thing is awesome, for chips, steaks, chicken, anything we've thrown in there so far.

Silicone microwave popcorn container, some coconut oil and flavocol….
    Tatest better :)

Also takes up practically 0 cupboard space vs a dedicated machine

    • +2

I use a paper bag, with kernals and coconut oil and salt

    • I have yet to manage to make microwave popcorn in a bag or in a contraption without a percentage of the kernels being burnt. Is there some trick to it?

      • Follow the instructions on the bag relative to the watts on your microwave. If your popcorn is getting burnt, it's because you're not following the instructions

      • Once the popping slows down to 1 pop per 3 seconds, STOP.

use a pot and lid, old school

    Sitting down?

    Deep breath?

    Frypan or saucepan + lid.

    Ta da!

Have humans suddenly discovered a free electricity tree?
Due to this 'must have everything electrified' mentality, pretty soon humans will be going off like popcorn.

(go on the usual crew. Neg away. Supress the bad news you don't want to hear.)

You're powering your frypan or saucepan from either electricity or gas. Neither grow on free trees.

Unless you're proposing they hear their saucepan over a fire, they started with the 'free tree' they cut down?

I'm talking about the obsession with having to have a seperate product for every action, that can be easily run of a single cooking source, and yes you can use your gas stove(household or other) a BBQ or open fire. The default postion should not be I need another 1 purpose frikkin gadget

I use one of these popcorn jugs in the microwave. Bit of trial and error at first to adapt to our appliance, but now we get perfect popcorn, every time. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08L73WZM2?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_p…
