90 points Ken Gargett: "Cracking value here. The fruit is from a single vineyard known as the Osmond’s ‘Clay Creek’ block located just outside McLaren Flat. The grapes are destemmed and chilled before a 24 hour cold soak before fermentation. The ferment is for 8 days on skins, before pressing to older oak for three months. Bottled early to ensure freshness. Pale crimson, the nose is fresh and fragrant with varietal Pinot notes. Florals, strawberries, gentle berry notes. This is nicely balanced with soft tannins, a slippery texture. A hint of crunchy acidity. Terrific drinking as we move to summer. Now and for a few years."

Those who know Pinot Noir, know it is one of the most expensive (legal) habits you can have! This is Pinot Noir without the price point!

Vineyard: This wine is a single vineyard Pinot Noir from the Osmond's 'Clay Creek' block located in a beautiful pocket just outside McLaren Flat. The vines are 50 years old, a rarity for Pinot Noir in McLaren Vale. The long established vines make for wonderfully balanced, high quality grapes.

Soils: The soils in this vineyard are deep aluvial clays from the Holocene era (11,700 years old). This area would have been a flood plain that was first planted by settlers so the soils retained water and the vines grew well, even before irrigation.

Harvest date: 3 February 2023

Winemaking: Grapes were picked and had a very short truck ride to the winery which allowed for fast processing after harvest. The grapes were destemmed and chilled to 12degC at the crusher before a 24hr cold soak pre-fermentation. Cool ferment temps allowed for bright fresh fruit flavour retention. Gentle treatment through ferment involved minimal 'handling' of the fruit, with oxygen injection into the ferment 3 time daily to keep the 'cap' wet and extract flavour, colour, and tannin from the skins. After 8 days ferment on skins, the wine was pressed to seasoned oak for 3 months before early bottling.

Nose: The nose displays youthful and fresh aromas of strawberries, cherries, and raspberries with additional floral notes.

Palate: The palate is vibrant with red cherries and strawberries, complemented by soft, powdery tannins.

Cellaring: Drink now to 2028

Vegan. Screwcap.

Winemaker: Bec Swincer & Bec Hardy

  • is this a light pinot, or more on the full bodies side like a french or central otago ?

    • Morning @garage sale. Good question. Had a bottle over lunch on Friday and can certainly say it's medium weight primarily as it is from a slightly warmer climate than say Burgundy, Tasmania and the Adelaide Hills.

it's not quite as light as say some Tassie Pinot but certainly nowhere near Central Otago stylistically (which is a style we simply would not chase).

      Cheers! RD :-)

  • How is the oak on this, subtle/strong?
Also how is the dry/sweet ratio on this?

    • @bassiveguitar so picked in February and bottled in June after a very short period of storage in old french oak prior to bottling. Oak influence therefore, minimal.
As with all our reds the wine is fermented dry and residual sugar is 0.5g/ltr.
      Cheers! RD :-)

Me: "oh look another Bec Hardy listing,… good job I don't need any more wine as the fridge is full as it is!!!"
    2min later
    Your order is confirmed

    • A good one to jump on this one too as it does sell out quite quickly each vintage……. Thanks @sc00terMcTav. Cheers! RD :-)

I'm glad it's not just me.

      • Apologies :-)

  • Description says 2023, review(Ken Gargett) is about 2022, your link takes me to your website that shows a picture of 2022 bottles. Which do we get when buying this wine, please??

    • Hi @Petrup Fo the avoidance of doubt it is the 2023.

  • Hi Richard, Just wondering if this is the same Pinot Noir that I received last month from my Order Number 14223?

    • @ifonlyiwasyounger indeed it is. Cheers! Richard :-)

    • Thoughts?

@axistentz It was only delievred to @ifonlyiwasyoungeron Friday so may not yet have opened a bottle…… :-)

Opened the first bottle tonight, and can confirm that it is an excellent example of an Australian Pinot Noir. I found the nose and palate to be very similar to that described by the OP. Definitely a bargain for the price offered.

    • And what is it like?

  • -1

    I'd bite for $120

  • Hi Richard. I've scooped up a few of your deals, but I don't really need this one right now… But how does it compare to the 'Lakeside' Adelaide Pinot Noir 2022 that you posted in April? It was a real cracker and I found that it was a really meaty Pinot once allowed to open up a bit. Cheers

    • +1

Hi @sammajohnson - another good question. So, the 'Lakeside' and Bec Hardy Pinots were one and the same - different labels for different markets. (That said, most of it now is under the BH label as one of those international markets we were supplying under Lakeside has dried up).

The 2023 stylistically is very similar - we chase that same style every year. Ths is, however, a new vineyard sourced from one of our existing growers (about 60% of fruit we source comes from growers in the region, around 40% from our own vineyards) as the existing Pinot block we'd been sourcing from for a number of years has been re-worked into another variety.

I drank 2021 last night and 2022 with friends on Sunday. 2022 perhaps edges it for me but I expect the 2023 to be much the same once it opens up - I was certainly very happy with it over lunch with the duck dishes from our feed me menu at cellar door on Friday over lunch. Hope that helps. Cheers! RD :-)

      • Thanks for your thorough response Richard. Mighty tempting!

  • Cracked a a bottle tonight and I’m really enjoying this one, RD.

Sadly, the remaining 11 “Easy Does It” bottles from the last order will find new homes in the form of anonymous gifts.

    • Thanks @brommo. Good to hear you’re enjoying the Pinot.

Sorry to hear the Easy Does it isn’t to your taste. Please PM me.

      Cheers! RD :-)
