Citi Rewards Credit Card: 70,000 Bonus Velocity Points with $5,000 Spend in 90 Days, $149 Annual Fee

230

Seems like a decent deal if you have already churned through the NAB rewards card with $1000 spend. This deal isn't showing up on pointhacks etc. but it has the lowest AF for the amount of points you get otherwise

The lower credit limit will help me as I have a few cards already showing on my credit report, and I can meet minimum spend easily. Your mileage may vary
I haven't had a Citi card before, but there seems to be lots of targeted offers pop up on this website which is a plus.

No it's not the best deal ever, but it seems to be a decent deal at the moment

$149 Annual Fee
$5k spend over 90 days

Minimum credit limit: $2,000
Maximum credit limit: $100,000

It says it may take up to 10 weeks to receive the points which sounds concerning, hopefully someone has past experience with this card/offer

  • Citi is owned by NAB these days, just FYI

Eeek these deals are getting worse, long live the days where 60 and 70,000 points came with a $0 annual fee.

    • +1

Yeh, it's sad times. I'm going to have to ration my FF points…

      • +2

Two minute noodles and luggage tags from the Qantas / Velocity store it is!

    • Yeah, I got the last one that Citi had with $0 annual fee earlier this year. It was a nice last round of bonus points before having to cancel my credit card again due to having to reapply for a construction loan.

Currently getting by using HSBC Everyday Global for everyday payments but I'm about to begin construction in the next two weeks so am free to apply for another credit card!

Not keen to pay $149 for 70k velocity points though.

      • I dont think there are many (or any?) 70k point cards with under $100 fee

        • You can get 60k points for $95 AF through pointhacks NAB card. But most people won’t be eligible for that due to having a nab card recently

That’s the only other one I know of

          • @Brick50: I see, interesting.

IMO this citi offer is a banger if you're eligible as that 4k minimum spend is very easy to hit thanks to payll. So effort wise this card is easy, whereas with some other cards you have to take on the pressure of having to spend a certain amount in a certain time, which may also cause some to over-indulge haha. But barely a worry if your monthly expenses are $$$

              What?

For existing Westpac customers (open a Choice account) you can get 70k velocity, 4k spend over 90 days, for $124 ($49 discounted AF + $75 Velocity rewards program fee).

    • Another good deal, unfortunately I have also had a Westpac card in last 12mo

  • Virgin Money: 100,000 Velocity points, $129 AF (offset by $129 flight credit), $1500 spend / month for 4 months

    • +1

      That deal expired

    • +1

Gone back to 60k at the moment and half annual fee first year.

    • I caught this deal last year it was good but the monthly spend was annoying. Would much rather $6k/4mon over $1.5k every month as they have a big list of ineligible transactions.

      • +1

Yes, it’s a little frustrating to try keep track of your eligible transactions each month

      • Which purchases are ineligible?

        • theres a list on their terms and conditions digital brochure but in my experience any council, government, utility weren't eligible

  • +1

Can anyone find a decent qantas FF deal that doesn’t have exorbitant annual fees?
I miss the old days of bulk points with low fees

  • Citi Premier has slightly high points for the same annual fee. 150 000 citi points which you could exchange for 75 000 velocity points or $600 in statement credit.

The downside is higher minimum spend ($7000) and minimum limit ($10000).

    • Double point for same annual seems good to me. Cheers

      • Not double points. You need to convert citi to velocity or whatever

        • Ah just got I read this deal as 70k v points, or 75k v points, not that much better then

          Thanks!

    • Am i reading this correct or am i misunderstanding things? Under rates and fees, the annual fee is only $150 on the provision that you spend $48,000??!? Otherwise it's $300 a year. I assume it's so try and keep the card open for 12 months?

  • I feel like I'm going around in circles trying to figure out my best option, perhaps someone here could offer some guidance:
I'm going to Canada next month and need/would like a credit card as a back up in case I run out of savings…or "suspicious" activity causes the bank to cancel my usual card. I'll likely spend no more than $20k, if that. Would it make more sense to get a credit card and use that, then pay it off with my savings? Which card would be best for overseas transactions in CAD and USD?
It's been well over 20 years (back in England) since I cancelled any credit cards I had. I'm with ING for banking and mortgage loan, and aside from a small student loan ($10k) have no other debt. No personal loans, car loans, phone contracts etc.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Used to have separate cards for domestic (earning points), and overseas (no int'l txn fees, but no points). These days we roll them up into a single Coles Mastercard. $99 annual, $0 additional card for the missus, earns Flybuys points, 0% international transaction fees, $0 conversion fees.
And yeah, when we're travelling, we immediately pay it off from savings to stay well below the limit.

      • Only earn points on up to 3k now though I think.

        Used to be uncapped

    • +2

In my opinion you are best to get yourself a Bankwest Zero Platinum card
$0 annual fees, $0 conversion fees and intl transfer fees

It's a good card, they are quick to approve and with their support (I had to call them at midnight whilst I was in the US and they answered straight away)

I keep the Bankwest for overseas travel/online purchases and then churn through cards like what I have posted here, virgin money card, ANZ black FF card etc. for points

Coles card may be ok as well, but you can always close the BW card after your travel if you don't want to keep it open vs paying $100 AF for coles card

Thanks for the responses @Rodger1 and @greenmartian.
I'd be paying it off immediately from the savings after returning home…. hopefully! As mentioned, it seems you can only get flybuys points to a value of $150 so if Bankwest has the same $0 conversion and international fees but better customer service, that may be the better option. I've had to wade through Flybuys customer service previously and if Coles is anywhere near as bad, then the $51 isn't worth the hassle.
If I'd received the recent targeted ING promo ($200) it may have been worth it for ease of having everything in one place but alas…

        • +1

Wait, where are you getting $150 from?

The joining bonus is 50k points (worth $250). Then you earn 2pts/$1 up to $3k a month (so, 6k pts/mo = $30/mo = $360/yr). And if you spend more than $3k, you're still earning 1pt/$1 that month (half rate, but uncapped).

Also, I've had to call them a few times (limit increase, and notifying them when we were travelling to some dodgy countries so we don't get flagged). Never had to wait more than a couple minutes, and the people have been easy to deal with. Maybe it's different customer service between Flybuys (freebie) and Credit Card (paying customer)?

          • +1

@greenmartian: I'll admit I only had a quick squizz at the Coles one because of my poor history with Flybuys. I'll go back and have a proper look before I proceed. Thanks

            • +2

@PatchyFog: Yeah, I've gotten to a point where churning through and maintaining multiple cards are not worth the hassle with everything else going on in my life. I haven't found a cheaper all-in-one card with zero fees (sans annual), collects points, and not charge for extra cards. If you're single (no additional cards) and have free time to churn yearly, there's likely something that suits you better.

Not to say it's without fault. Their online interface is a dog's breakfast. And Flybuys itself leaves a lot to be desired (as you have experienced yourself). The flybuys store is full of overpriced crap not worth getting anyway - we always just cash it out as soon as it accumulates. Better groceries in hand right now, than some useless points accumulating in the cloud.

              • @greenmartian: Yeah, honestly, it's all about the international/overseas fees for me. And the interest rate obviously. An extra few dollars towards the groceries wouldn't hurt though.
Hopefully, I can pay it off the moment I get home but from previous cc experience that doesn't always work out.

              • +1

@greenmartian: I second that - I've held the BW Zero Plat for more than 10 years and most of the time it sits in my drawer until I dust it off for any overseas holidays/big online international shopping. It also has travel insurance which is quite a good deal given it's a $0 annual fee. It honestly is the best hassle-free travel card I've experienced to date and Ive never had any complaints about it.

They're super quick at responding to things - had a disputed $300 transaction once, I called them and within the same day they had credited my card the $300 while they investigated.

It's a great card to have just sitting in your drawer since it's free so that also helps with your credit score cos every month you havent "missed" any payments lol.

Another good point is that their Call Centre hours are WA times, so if you're on the east coast, you get an extra 2-3 hours past 5pm AEST to call their call centre depending on time of year.

                • @MrGarciaA: Appreciate your input. I can't find many complaints regarding Bankwest and my (previously mentioned) issues with Flybuys customer service has kinda soured me towards them and their affiliates.
I'll use the weekend to go through the pro's and cons of each and make a decision.

                  Thanks

      • oh, wow, thanks! I was using Citi Plus overseas but this card is a bomb. It doesnt even have min spend for travel insurance:
There is no cost for this cover and no requirement to spend a
certain amount on prepaid travel costs by charging those costs
to your eligible credit card account
Though, rental vehicle excess cover is up to $3K only. NAB Platinum covers $5K

Does anyone know Citi banks policy with signing up for the same card within 12 month / 18 months or is it less?

  • Does anyone know what's the best valued card ATM, don't mind it it's a reward card or a frequent flyer card ? The signup bonus looks like crap these days!

  • Fine print says annual fee is $249 for Citi Rewards Card?

  • +1

I have a citi premier card - can I apply for this and get bonus points?

    • Would like to know the same!

    • Want to know too
