What was wrong with them in the first place?

    • +2

      Seagate won't tell you.

Interestingly I can't find a lot about recertified drives on Seagate's site itself, but they are re-tested and relabeled at a factory somewhere - I suspect also given a new serial number in firmware.

      • smart data would reset any power on hours i guess?

        so zero hours

    • I would guess anything from damaged box returns to needing complete platter, board, or head replacements.

Would love to know where the seller got them - it's quite possible Seagate support doesn't know about these but it seems like they're supposed to be used as warranty replacements, not sold:

    V = me
    S = support

S: Just a moment I will check the information.
If it is bought from a trusted seller it can't be recertified it has to be new.
However it can be recertified if it is a replacement for a faulty one.
if you want to buy a seagate drive I suggest you visit this link https://www.seagate.com/em/en/where-to-buy/

V: I am not sure if you are allowed to access other sites but https://pongobyte.com.au/product/seagate-exos-x18-18tb-facto… Read
S: and enter the country to get the trusted sellers.

V: so you're saying recertified drives should not be sold from third parties?
S: Yes in general you shouldn't because it wouldn't have warranty.
    V: OK, I understand Read
S: No problem but just take care because sometimes it is also a fake product.
S: So we can't ensure that unless it is an authorized trusted seller found on the website.

I reckon you're probably OK if the drive serial numbers show up on Seagate's site.

Tempting but the business address listed on their site is a virtual office.

in 30+ years of tech (server/home/kid/games/linux distros) - NEVER NEVER NEVER buy/use recertified drives.

Unless you are giving them to a Fr-enemy…..

Sorry…… good luck an all - but just never had any luck.

yea even warranty replacement drives which tend to be remanufactured never last (so often even DOA)

Never trust seagate… and these are mechanical drive, if your data is important, dont buy these.

    • +4

I could say the same about WD, or Hitachi or whoever. All disks fail and everyone has a horror story about one particular brand.

    • +2

if your data is important, dont buy these.

If your data is important you should have multiple backups.

  • i have bought one.. will run it on a bed of rice.. hopefully will extend its life cycle.

  • Never buy white label. Little chance this is legit and likely another "2TB Flash Drive" (with only 16G real capacity) thing.

  • Are these X20 as in title/website description or X18 as in the picture?

    • These are X20, X18 photos are from a previous batch.

      • thanks

  • Hey @pongobyte, just want a little more confidence before pulling the trigger.

Obviously there's risk in a white label / warrant drive, but happy to accept that. Could you maybe tell us (what you can) about how / why you're selling drives as a third party, and how your 6-month warranty would work should there be an issue?

    Cheers

We're a small computer business, apart from custom build computers we also sell a limited number of computer components.

These recertified drives are enterprise versions, with a (very) good value proposition for various uses, including NAS or crypto. May not be recommended for work/business related critical environments, but for home and personal use these should be just right.
Like someone else mentioned here, storage should (always) also be about backing up data and not just how much warranty is attached to it.

Given these drives have been refurbished by the manufacturer, we trust they will perform well.
The FR that are SATA (these normally have no fault when returned to the manufacturer) have basically gone through the same testing process twice compared to new drives which would go through this once; so if anything, they may be more reliable than a brand new drive.
The WL that are SAS might have undergone a more involved repair or been in use for longer periods of time prior to being refurbished, but have been through the same test sequence as new or FR drives, before being resold.

WL SAS come with a handful of power on hours, FR SATA usually have zero hours.

There is also the matter of recycling and reusing technology that would otherwise have gone to landfill, that some people would find important.

If anything goes wrong with these drives during the 6 months warranty, we will replace or refund based on the same terms as any other serious business.

In the end, everyone should do their own due diligence when purchasing anything really and this is no different.

    • Comically I found a 4TB in my drawer that I forgot about that suits my needs this time, but I wanted to give you feedback that this is the exact style of post that gives me confidence to buy from you. Best of luck and thanks again!

  • How long is delivery on these drives?

Just wondering where they get shipped from.

    Thanks!

    • We ship using Express Post from Sydney.
