Help with Selling Second Hand Sports Car

Hey all appreciate any suggestions or ideas. I'm trying to sell my 2016 Kia Koup turbo, a 150kw coupe (0-100 in 7 seconds) along the lines of a Veloster or 86/BRZ. It's a tidy car with after markets rims, sports tyres and Android Auto/Carplay audio setup and low kms. It's been detailed and I have decent photos. Drives awesome and only selling due to growing family. But I've had no luck on FB marketplace or Car sales so far. Cars Guide price range is saying 15K-19K, so I'm selling for 16K, which I feel is pretty cheap. It's a very unique vehicle, and there are only 8 for sale across the country right now which I suspect is working against me.

I've approached some of the car brokers out there, but only getting lowball offers.

I've been told it's illegal to park a car with a for sale sign on it in QLD these days, which is how I sold my last car in 2 days! Back in the day, I would have used a site like Boostcrusing to sell it, but maybe I'm out of the loop I can't seem to find a group like this on the Gold Coast or Brisbane area.

I know it's a bad time of year to sell and that the second-hand market is dropping. I thought meeting the market would be enough. Finding this very stressful as I've already missed out on two cars I wanted to buy. Need the cash to finance my next car. Any ideas on how to reach a prospective buyer welcome!

It's nothing like the 86/BRZ which are RWD and NA. More driver focused and less, you know, cerato focused.

Probably closer to a Fiesta ST - which I would choose any day over the Koup especially as they are priced similarly.

There's only one reason cars don't sell - price.

  • +9

Stump up the cost to promote it on Carsales? That's the go-to place for most people I would have thought.

Not too surprised selling a 7 year old unknown small Kia is proving to be challenging but for the right price, anything will sell.

Also, there's 27 of them for sale right now: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/kia/cerato/coupe-bodystyle/

    • +1

      11 turbo models

      Though it's only a 1.6T

    • This is the turbo variant, not the bog standard 2.0l. Probably most similar to the Kia Cerato GT. Believe it or not, Kia doesn't just make soccer mum cars. It's on Car sales. no bites.

      • +4

FYI, these are the cars you're up against

      • +1

Nah mate, if it's a Kia then it's soccer's mum car, unless it's a Stinger.

    • +2

Nope, ive listed cars and bikes on facebook, gumtree and carsales/bikesales. You know where it ALWAYS sells?

      Thats right, facebook…

    • oofff, the prices, for that, lol

  • +2

They've changed the rules for Qld rwc, you are now allowed to advertise the car for sale before getting a rwc, not that that stopped anyone before anyway.

    • TIL. How long is the RWC valid for?

      • Don't quote me, but I believe 2 months for private individuals and 3 months for dealers.

        • +3

That makes more sense than Victoria's 30 days. Cheers.

Best thing to do is monitor all the other koups for sale and see the price they disappear at.

I'd you want it gone quick, you'll need to sell at the lower end of the range.

I find it you have the original rims, it will sell easier. People don't like to buy "modified" cars…

    • Don't have the original rims. Not sure if it's worth trying to source them.

    • Best thing to do is monitor all the other koups for sale

I think that carsales lets you search for cars that have been sold, so that might help the OP see where the market is.

    • +4

I find it you have the original rims, it will sell easier.

Mike from WheelerDealers, "With this one easy trick……"

    • +5

This is a real thing, for sure. I wouldn’t buy a car with aftermarket rims. My internal dialogue would be asking questions like “what was wrong with the original rims?”, and “what other cheap aftermarket accessories have been fitted?” (I’m not saying your rims actually WERE cheap, just explaining what I’d be thinking)

Edit: yep just saw the shitty sub in the boot. I’d walk 100%.

      • I’d be on the lookout for other signs of a hard life and think of aftermarket rims as a bonus. Overall I prefer some level of personalisation for a vehicle and rims is the easy way to do that. If someone else has paid for them, even better.

        • Fair enough :)

        • each to their own opinion

      • I think we're split into 2 groups; one that likes or cars stock and those that like bling.
I just find stock rims suit a car better than after market ones, generally.

      • An 8" 300 Watt sub would likely compliment the factory system well without being OTT.

  • if all else fails take the hit and trade it in?

agree with others though. veloster comparison is fair, it's a sports-themed car. you'll need to drop the price for a quicker sale, or fit the stock rims if your looking for your current price.

  • +15

lol, 86/BRZ? You're dreaming. Fix your ad on Carsales, it's so loaded with bullshit it reads like a giant red flag and all the modifications sound like it was driven by someone who likely flogged all that time. Do not list it as a potential project car, that just drives normal people away from it - https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2016-kia-cerato-kou…

Carsales recommends $13,850 - $15,950, so you're at the top end of their pricing guide. And it's hardly a car people want, Kia killed off making hot hatches like this and the Cee'd for a reason. It's also not low kms, 100,000km for a 7 year old car is quite a lot. A manual simply isn't popular anymore. I'd go at the low end if you really want to move it quickly.

    • +5

Also don't take photos in an industrial complex.

      • +5

Where else can you do donuts in reverse gear without attracting attention?

      • It was a shopping center, trying to avoid harsh sunlight casting shadows.

        • Plenty of nice spots around your neck of the woods to take photos.

    • +1

Appreciate the input. Toned the add down see if that makes a difference.

Hey all appreciate any suggestions or ideas. I'm trying to sell my 2016 Kia Koup turbo, a 150kw coupe (0-100 in 7 seconds) along the lines of a Veloster or 86/BRZ

7 seconds (actually it's 7.4 seconds) isn't the flex you think it is. A toyota Corolla hybrid does the same speed, and a standard petrol does 9 seconds. I guess an 86 does similar to yours which is why you've compared thhttps://www.ozbargain.com.au/em but they aren't "along the lines" of.

The reason it's not selling will be the price. you seem to think it's probably worth more than it is given the 'mods' you've done to it. generally when people do mods to a car it drops the value, not increasing it. Also mileage seems a lot for the age of the car. It's not really a "sports car" either..

Drop the price by $2k and see what happens.

I've approached some of the car brokers out there, but only getting lowball offers.

anything will be a lowball offer when you have an expectation that it will sell at a high price for what people are willing to buy it for.

The market is trying to tell you something about your price, you should listen.

    • +2

      Appreciate the feedback.

    • I'm not saying the 2016 Kia Koup turbo is fast but a Toyota Corolla hybrid is much slower.

      https://www.chasingcars.com.au/reviews/small-cars/toyota-cor…

"Toyota doesn’t claim a 0-100km/h sprint time for the Corolla, but we measured the mechanically identical Ascent Sport at 11.5 seconds – and the ZR hybrid feels like it runs out of steam above 80km/h."

      • +1

That’s the old version of the Corolla. There’s a newer version with a more powerful engine and motor combination. Can”t say it runs out of steam when I need to go from 0-90 when merging onto the M4.

Source: I have the newer version.

        • -1

Yes and I'm selling a 2016 car.. apples to apples.

        • This one?

          Power (petrol) 72kW @ 5200rpm
          Torque (petrol) 142Nm @ 3600rpm
          Power (electric) 70kW
          Torque (electric) 185Nm
          Combined power 103kW

          • +1

@JimB: Yes. The old hybrid was 90kW

            • @kerfuffle: 103kW is much better (but still much slower than OP's Kia turbo).

        • -2

WE KNOW YOU OWN A COROLLA

I do jest slightly, I enjoy hearing your Corolla updates, or reminders that you do, in fact, own a Corolla. It’s a weird flex and I love it. I’ve forgotten the colour though. I vaguely remember you wanted blue, or a hatch, or something. Whatever, it’s great, you’re great.

  • +4

I've approached some of the car brokers out there, but only getting lowball offers.

Of course, because it's not a sought after vehicle.

Given the lack of them around, you're gonna be better off trading this one in and biting the bullet on the value.

  • +2

    @pegaxs

Run exclusively on 98 unleaded fuel to ensure performance and longevity.

Only requires 91. Keep it together man. Stay strong.

    • It's a 1.4L Turbo engine. Hyundai/KIA engineers recommend 98 octane to reduce the likelihood over time that build-up from the use of lower octane fuel can lead to piston failure.

But anyway I appreciate where you are coming from.Yes it will in fact work with 91 octane.

      • +5

        It's also a 1.6L.

        While I'm at it…

        Leather seats

        Hardly. It's vinyl. Leather look.

        New leather gear knob

Screams to me that the driver slams the gears and wore out the leather vinyl.

        • Personally, I think more people would go for this auto model with lower kms and no mods (that scream thrashed)

Manual Kia Turbo just isn't on many peoples' lists…

    • +2

But but but… Scotty Kilmer said…

It's basically car sales talk for; "I've only ever put 91 or E10 in it, but if I say 98 you will think I took care of the car…"

    • I don’t recall seeing a turbo that didn’t require 95.

      How about that.

      • Fiesta ST only asks for 91 as well

      • +4

There's a whole world out there outside of your own personal experience

        • +1

          Username checks out

  • Maybe remove the sub and sell it separately, and any other bits of audio that are easy to remove/restore to OEM.

If you have the stock wheels put them back on too, sell the aftermarket ones separately.

    Try listing it on Gumtree?

    • You have to pay for gumtree car ads nowadays! Does anyone still buy cars on Gumtree?

  • Honestly its a kia sports car, they are hard to move simply from the fact that they are mostly unknown. Enthusiasts won't be looking for them and honestly the options for "fast" FWD cars is huge so you are unlikely to stumble upon them. Also it isn't anything close to a BRZ, you may as well advertise it as like a cheaper lambo with two doors :P

If you need to move it fast drop the price. I sold a 350z at the start of the year and the difference in enquires (and eventual sale) for a $2,000 drop was crazy.

    • Yeah it's a trade-off, loose 2K, and then that's 2k less budget for a new car. I guess that's what attracted me to it originally it was unique. Underrated gem from my perspective. then again I used to own a Suzuki Ignis sport..😂

      • Haha I'm almost worried to ask what you are looking at as your next car :p

Kia's are slept on in general. Originally I looked into getting a Kia Stingers, but ended up in a cheaper fwd wagon buzz box (Skoda RS). The fact that some have sat in dealers yards from over 12 months ago makes me think it was probably for the best. Funny enough the only reason I ended up with a Skoda is because I did a search for "Post 2015, Manual, Wagon under 25k" and it was the only car that came up.

It sucks when you see other cars that you know don't drive as well listed for more… but remember those also haven't sold. Best of luck mate.

  • +1

Nice car, a very under appreciated model that didnt get the popularity it deserved. Only people seeking them out will probably be interested rather than people just browsing for something.

I am going to go against the tide a bit here and say dont drop the price. It wont make a difference. If you aren't in a rush to sell take if off the market until when there are very little others listed. Wait and pick your time when there is nothing or very little being offered and keep a decent price on it. People that are in the market place for it will know what it is and probably be willing to pay for it because there are so few of them. If you have to sell it soon, list it as the 2nd cheapest car, thats what I've done in the past and it nearly always works well. The problem with an unpopular car is that you will always loose your a$se in resell if you dont get lucky without a motivated buyer.

Also the ad looks and reads fine. Dont know what the others are going on about.

Looking at other Koupes for sale, the other problem you have is it's priced the same as dealer cars. You gotta undercut the dealers!!

    • Thansk for feedback, will talk to wife about what we can accept as far as sale price.

  • +1

List it on facebook sites with enthusiasts

    • +1

Yeah thats a great suggestion. It's such a little known model you probably need to find the enthusiasts.

    • I've tried a few KIA facebook groups, but most of them are focussed on the Sorrento and other SUVs. Or the KIA stinger, and well the Koup is a very different class of car.

      • Doesn’t have to a be Kia group. Look for local enthusiast groups.

  • +2

If it's not selling, it's for one very simple reason - price.

  • Is it even worth swapping to these OEM rims? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334900975492

Probably cost $1000 to do so.

    • The original wheels look much better than the BBS CH-R replicas (especially as they curbed).

However, not sure you'll get your money back.

  • How long have you waited, sometimes selling a car takes a few weeks. Try reduce the price gradually. Carsales wasn't that effective for me. Sold a BRZ earlier in the year, got way more traction on facebook. Sold eventually in 3 weeks after I reduced the price a bit

  • +2

Either return it back to stock, replace the rims and remove the stereo, and drop the price ~$2k
    or
    trade it in.

It's not a sports car. Reckon my aunt's 'rolla could beat it on a track.
It's a manual so that will exclude a lot of the audience for this type and price of car, as they'll want auto.

    • -1

Appreciate your feedback but you are wrong.

    • -1

The Kia Turbo Coupes were a very capable hot hatch.

  • +1

I’m still laughing at Boostcrusing, a name I haven’t heard in a long time!

    • +1

      Us GenXs got old fast!

      • What was your younger you’s boostcrusing car of choice? And do you still have it?

        • Suzuki Swift GTI, and no don't have it.

  • The demand for these are not high. Coupes like this are usually a younger person's only car or someone's weekend (second) car. Younger people don't want to spend more than they have to.. and those that want a weekend car probably have the money to buy a nicer coupe.

    • +3

Not to mention most younger people won't want to drive manual

      • That's very true too. Most young people wouldn't even know how to drive manual! 😂

  • +2

When I saw the photos it didn’t shout ‘boy racer’ to me. Not something I’d go searching for if I was a p plater looking for street cred.

When you’ve got an unusual car like this it often will take time to sell unless it’s very keenly priced. It’s not a model many people would go searching for and likely they have to stumble upon it and ‘fall in love’.

Drop the photo of the kerb rash and cut in the seat. Patch up the wheel with a bit of sanding and some black paint instead. Both those will turn people off. You’ve got to interest them in instpecting before you let them down with blemishes. Leave out the price of the custom install but include the same description, price of accessories doesn’t mean anything in the used market.

    • Where's the cut in the seat or are you confusing it with the isofix tag?

      • Looks like it’s gone already. There was 23 photos when I liked before, now 20.

        • That makes sense. Cheers

          • @Muzeeb: Then I had another look and they are still there, just hiding under ‘imperfections’

            • @Euphemistic: That makes even more sense. I missed the imperfections tab in the app. Cheers.

    • …. cut in the seat

      Driver's seat?

  • +1

    I recently sold a 15yo Mitsubishi.
Listed it on Carsales and FB Marketplace.
I'll never list a vehicle for sale on Carsales again. What a waste of time.
It ended up selling on FB Marketplace, took 6 weeks.

I'd suggest spending the 'boost' money on FB. Save yourself the money on other platforms.

    • Exactly this. Apart from the boost on FB. Just list it on marketplace, then join a bunch of car buy, sell, swap and list them there as well.

  • Carsales has an instant offer/buy feature, have you tried that?
I'm selling my Fiesta ST towards the end of the year and I'll go down this route to avoid hassles

    • +1

Very quick and easy way for OP to get a massive lowball offer. Sure.

    • Please turn on your messages in account settings. I'd like to PM you. Cheers.

      • +1

        NIL

    • I tried they said they wouldn't be able to provide an offer. Guess it wasn't a Hilux or Landcruiser they could low ball and flip easily.

    • Yeah, you are losing alot of money doing that. Lol

Help with Selling Second Hand Sports Car

I'm trying to sell my 2016 Kia Koup turbo

My understanding of a sports car is severely skewed.
Also "Unique" does not mean in demand

Even a basic BYD ATTO 3 SUV will do 0-100 faster.

    • -1

The BYD is a small SUV EV, literally the opposite of this car.

      • +1

Exactly. The discount shopping trolley is still faster.

        Hell, my Toyota is faster.

  • Appreciate the feedback folks, but if you want to start comparing a 2016 turbo petrol car to a brand-new electric car that costs 50K… well I think the comparisons are getting a bit too silly.

  • +2

100k on the clock, manual and 1.6l engine. I'd go with $13k and even less if you're younger than 25.

  • +1

Who in their right mind would want to buy a second hand Sports Bra

    • +1

      Depends who was wearing it.

    • It's an excellent side hustle, along with selling feet pics.

  • +1

I sold all my cars via The Trading Post.
