Would You Pay More for Australian Made Appliances?

Would you pay slightly more for Australian built
appliances. I’m talking about dishwashers, fridges, freezers and TVs etc.
And if not, why not?

  • I wouldn’t really buy unless the ceo or manger is multi ethnic friendly, and anyone in this forum should know there’s already some xenophobia

Take it from someone who’s read comments for over a decade here and the web, hate of some Asia made stuff has never changed, since before Covid and after

Edit: but it is more nicer in Australia compared to maybe euro/usa

As long as it's not made in CCPland, I'll buy it

  • I certainly wouldn't pay more than say a German made equivalent. Say you do have an equivalent product, the transport cost to get it to me should be much less, so even for an equivalent it should really cost LESS if made in Australia.
Should we pay more because patriotism? Mate that is long dead.

    • As dead as the commodore and falcon.

  • Aus wage expectations are way too high to make most things here and be profitable. That's why manufacturing left Aus decades ago.

If we do build something, the company would have to find a way to reduce costs somehow to try and match overseas competitors which means a reduction in quality somewhere or everywhere.
This is always why people never used to like Aus made products and cars back when we did have the option between the two.

A small few will claim to buy Aus even if it's more expensive but the overwhelming majority of people will always choose the cheaper option if given the choice between two. So why would manufacturers even bother to try.

All this "buy Australian" stuff is just bizarre to me … it has no meaning beyond jingoistic marketing where relevant people attempt to pass of the sub-standard as the best.

It's interesting that the conversation around this topic is not "we will buy the best … and we want the best to be Australian".

  • I'm surprised most won't support local manufacturing. I voted Yes, I would.

I suppose it depends on how much is "slightly more", 5% ? 10% ? It has to be sustainable for local manufacturing to flourish.

  • Good quality product costs almost the same to make in Australia as it does in China. Poor quality product is still expensive in Australia but very cheap to make in China.

  • if you really wanted the bestprice then you would buy the cheapest crap, but the problem is we vote in a political party that pretends to be pro australian but the keep cutting CSIRO spending and cut university spending, if we cant invent something we sure as hell cant build it, but as you want to spend less then you will keep voting in the liberal party and you make australia more non australian, look at what they did to the automotive industry
