$7.50 for the normal plug, and $10 for the one that includes a USB socket. Get in before they sell out (which they did quite quickly last time.)

The ones I bought last time seemingly didn't have the power monitoring working, though I haven't investigated in detail for lack of time. Any advice/feedback welcome.

            • @OzComment: I meant using the USB ports for it. Plugging in a further USB adaptor when there is built-in usb is a shame.

              • +3

@witheredcouch: I know what you mean but buy the non usb version, it's $2.5 cheaper and without a shame.

                • @OzComment: I was hoping that the USB ports would give the functionality of having smart USB ports as well as the device plugged in to the outlet. I guess it was me being hopeful, but it'd be nice.

      • +1

To add to this, note that the Tuya energy monitoring smart plugs with USB do NOT measure the power draw of the USB ports, it only measures the power for the main power plug. I was very disappointed when I discovered this.

  • do i control from my iphone? what app?

    • +1

Yes, and there are a number of apps available. Tuya is one.

      • Hi can I connect it to Apple home? So that I can use a shortcut too. I just bought it today but I can’t find the option to connect it to Apple home. Please help

        • They are not compatible with HomeKit standalone, you’ll need to setup something like homebridge or home assistant.
Either of these will expose your device to HomeKit.

Don’t go this path if you are not into home automation, or just have a few of these smart devices.

  • Can I plug two of these in a standard double GPO power plug?

Question is for both the USB version and non USB version. Pls help.

    • Why not? Double GPOs are essentially single power points..

      • 240V*10A=2400W per point
      • Can the double power point accommodate the width of the plugs side by side (dimensions on product page) - they should fit - depends on GPO point
      • Is there gonna be interference from side by side crest smart plugs - unlikely

Has this post helped u - probably not :/

      • Can the double power point accommodate the width of the plugs side by side (dimensions on product page) - they should fit - depends on GPO point

I think that is what he is referring to. I think you could be right, it'll be close.

      • +1

yeah I was more referring to the width. I have the old Tplink one and you cant use the second power point , if you plug this into the first power point

    • +5

I have just bought 3 in my local BigW in Warnbro, WA and can confirm that you can plug two side by side with no issues (the non USB version), but by the look they all seem to be the same width.

  • Just tried to buy a couple - unavailable for delivery in NSW

if i plug my tv into it and set a schedule to turn off at midnight every night, does it automatically turn it off while watching or is it smart enough to stay on until i standby the tv?

    • +5

      These things aren't that smart

    • It will turn off whilst you are watching it.

I have auto turn off on my TV (built-in feature) and it will turn off regardless of what is happening. Signal or not.

You want one of those powerboards that is IR controlled that were the power savers in the day.

    • +1

Unless you put some conditional on it based on power usage (only turn off if power usage <X) it'll just turn off.

    • +1

If you want it to have additional smarts (e.g. only turn off the plug if current power consumption < 5W) you'll need to use something like a Home Assistant automation.

Personally I wouldn't bother — the vast majority of all TVs manufactured within the last 10 years consume around 0.8W or less while on standby power, so it actually draws about the same amount of power as your average smart plug does itself when in the "off" state, so any potential electricity savings would be cancelled out. I confirmed all of this with my Power-Mate Lite energy monitoring meter.

      • +2

True, the unit itself consume 0.9 watt and 1.1 watt(for USB version). Also don't forget when you turn on the switch it consume around 0.6 watt more. I ever planning to put it on a small radio, but it turn out the radio only consume only around 1.1 watt so even leaving the radio on all the time it consume less power.

  • ok next question, is this a no-brainer product where i will recoup $7.50 in electricity fees over the long-term anyway

    • +3

      is this a no-brainer product

unfortunately, brainpower is required for money savings.

The only way you'll recoup anything is if you monitor your usage and change your habits to be more energy/usage pattern efficient.

    • +1

I think you're unlikely to gain your money back from electricity savings, most modern appliances are fairly energy efficient anyway. Note that the average wifi smart plug will itself draw around 0.8W of continuous power in the "off" state, and around 1.3W while in the "on" state.

I currently have 12 energy monitoring smart plugs in my home, all hooked up to Home Assistant. I mostly use them to monitor overall power usage and activity trends of my various devices and appliances, less so for automation. I'm acutely aware that all of my smart plugs together consume around 15W of power while in use, but it's worth it to me.

      • How much monitoring data can the plugs store?

        • +1

From my experience most smart plugs store a small amount of aggregated data, typically:
          * Today's total power usage (kWh)
          * This week's total power usage
          * This month's total power usage
          etc
And they also display the current real-time power consumption in Watts.

Some smart plugs also offer relatively coarse graphs of power usage during the day or over the course of a month (typically, power consumption for each hour of the day, and then power usage per day). I supect the smart plug probably offloads it to the mobile app every now and then so that it can clear its on-board memory.

If you need more fine/discrete usage reporting, you'll need to hook them up to Home Assistant, which is what I do.

          • +1

            @deadpoet:

            • correction, I don't think the smart plug uploads to the app, I think it actually uploads power monitoring data to the cloud where it is stored for the app to retrieve it. I strongly suspect this is the case for the Tapo P110, for example.
          • @deadpoet: Thanks

  • I was recently converted and bought the meross ones at RRP. They are so good! You voice activate everything!
At this price it’s a no-brainer! But no stock!

  • +2

Just got my order cancelled from the store I was suppose to pick up and now it's sold out elsewhere.

So a BIG middle finger to Big W for crappy stock management and wasting my time and hopes.

    • Agreed. Pretty annoying. Said it was available, added to my cart, paid.

Now refunded as apparently wasn't stock.

      Pretty unsatisfactory from Big W.

      • It's "annoying" when it's an honest, sporadic mistake, like here.

But big establishments like Bunnings, Big W, Anaconda, whatever have you, they notoriously mislead customers like that and always get away with it.

What is interesting, I've never experienced such situation at foreign stores, eg. at Decathlon, who can somehow track their stock in real time. Which our Aussie brands seemingly are unable to do or just don't care, because unlike in other countries, you can take money for something you don't have and then just say "Unfortunately, at this time we are unable". And those foreign companies' values and IT systems reflect that basic decency/laws.

  • Just picked up 2 at Marion S.A.

  • Thanks, I bought a small one a couple of weeks ago for $15 and they were out of stock in my local NSW shop, but I found a few leftover bigger ones with the USB and got two, not bad $10 each.

Now to convert them to esphome… The small one had the ESP chip so keeping my fingers crossed

    • -1

Apparently they are able to be flashed with tasmota - https://templates.blakadder.com/crest_SHSPM1.html

      • What is the advantage to flash with tasmota, and are there instructions on doing so?

        Thanks!

        • Tasmota allows for local control (aka home assistant). If you don't know what this means, it's not something you should try.

      • Just tried this on one of the normal plugs that I picked up today (no USB, SHSPM1, also has a Crest batch sticker: 27877).

Was not able to flash OTA with tuya-convert. It looks like it has the newer patched firmware, evident by a PSK ID beginning with 02 in smarthack-psk.log.

So any update is likely going to need to open it up and flash the chip directly.

      • These aren't able to be flashed using tuya_convert, same as the last gen of Kogan plugs. Soldering and disassembly is required.

    • Does this need any soldering / opening up the device ?
Are you able to share any guides / videos that you follow ?

      • -1

        I've not tried it

      • I tried it. Opening it is a nightmare, and I couldn't get the flash to work.

        • +1

Take the ESP chip off the main board before flashing Tasmota

          • @cnboyli: I imagine that would work, but I don't have the soldering skills to remove/reattach it.

If you've got any good suggestions as to how I could learn, I'd appreciate it.

            • @Pirateguybrush: I mean remove the the secondary board TYWE2S from the main plug circuit board, not the actual ESP chip from TYWE2S . There are only 8 or 9 solder contacts. If you have already opened the case then you know what I am talking about.

            • @Pirateguybrush: Use de-soldering pump to remove the solder

        • Do you have any photos of the opened plug so I can get a better idea of how it's constructed before I crack mine open?

          • +1

@Nitrogen: No, sorry. The chip is a TYWE2S, but you won't be able to flash it without removing it - My theory is there's a secondary chip attached that's connected to the TX/RX lines, and is preventing flashing unless you were able to fully desolder and re-solder the TYWE2S.

            • @Pirateguybrush: I was able to flash 3 Kogan plugs (same chip) without removing the chip but failed with a 4th one for some reason. So YMMV.

      • These aren't able to be flashed using tuya_convert, same as the last gen of Kogan plugs. Soldering and disassembly is required.

Chassis is glued, then once open you need to solder cables to respective pins (tx,rx,3.3v and gnd) and also the GPIO0 pin which is just a testpoint on the tiny board.

I didn't do this exact one yet but I had to remove the little ESP chip board from another board in some kogan ones which added extra complexity.

It's definitely a weekend project and that's assuming you already have hass and esphome running :)

  • FYI, still 7 of the USB ones in Rocky

Sorry, I grabbed the last 3 regular ones.

Not marked at half price but scans at half price.

  • 3 units left at Bigw Kingston Tas (sighted) :)
If you believe BigW app stock levels 3 left at Glenorchy too.

(Also my favourite Cygnett Smart button on clearance for $11.95 but I bought the last two. Still some temp/humidity, motion sensors and window/door sensors left (couple of each left @ $11.95)

  • +1

yewww, picked up 6 thanks OP appreciate it.

  • +1

Bigw wouldn't do delivery on these even if store had in stock. But seems I managed to work around this via ordering via BigW's MyDeals listing at https://www.mydeal.com.au/crest-smart-single-adaptor-with-2-… max 6 pieces in one order allowed, so I ordered 6. Their online stock says 2 left in stock now. Fight!

  • Got the last 1 from Kingsway - 3 or so were left of the USB version, in store.

    • I've got 4 of the non-USB's ordered via C&C to pick up at Kingsway, no email to say the order is ready yet though.
I ordered at 12:40pm and it said 4 of 4 items available.

  • I am curious if these record peak power draw or just real time?
I would like to see how close my computers PSU usage gets to its maximum Watts to see if I need to upgrade it when I get a new GPU.

    • +1

The included app does only real time. Using home assistant can record the values, but I haven't got around to try it (I was thinking about trying Tuya-Convert, not sure whether that works). However, doing that will most likely void the warranty as that basically changes the firmware.

If you don't want to do that or uncomfortable with it and want to be able to track the power draw over a period of time, you probably want to look for a different product.

  • I can’t get these things to pair. I setup my wifi modem with a split 2.4ghz network and connected to it with my phone. Then I plugged it in 2m away from the wifi and held down power until it blinks. Does nothing! So frustrating.

    • I've never had a problem, there must be something you have done incorrectly or your WiFi isn't 2.4ghz split or working. Make sure also your WiFi SSID doesn't have any weird characters. My Foxtel Box doesn't like WiFi with odd characters in it.

  • I purchased 2x of the model with USB at $10 each. Both working well for what I use them for (scheduled remote power management of kitchen equipment and 3d printer).
They can be added to HA.

    • scheduled remote power management of kitchen equipment

Out of curiosity, what kitchen equipment?

      • +1

        Slow cooker

  • +4

Click and collected 2x USB versions from Highpoint VIC
Click and collected 2x Non-USB versions from Sunshine VIC. Had a bit of a chat with the lovely lady at the service desk, she said they'd been flying off the shelf today for C&C orders, I explained why (OzB!). She mentioned she might have another at the back from a cancelled C&C order. She come back with it and I purchase it.

Now I have 5 smart plugs.
1 to go on my server rack, the other 4… hmm.

  • +1

    Order cancelled by BigW…

    • Classic!

  • Available at BigW Gold Coast (Stocklands) Burleigh Heads

  • They still have some in 2 Townsville QLD stores - the store I was in didn’t have the reduction on show - still $26 or something like that. Scanned fine though.

  • Back in stock Again in multiple places.
