Heads up golden week first week of May.

Never knew Kochi, Matsumoto n Nagoya were cities in Japan. Always thought it was just a Japanese restaurant names.

  • +17

Just a heads up - most of these dates is inclusive of Japan's Golden Week, one of the busiest times of the year in Japan. Even at this price tag, I'm not sure if I want to visit Japan during this period, paired with the fact that the cherry blossom season would be well over in the major cities. Earlier dates are also really expensive for the layovers that are being paired with it.

I'd hesitate to call this a deal but would love to discuss. I appreciate the effort that went into making this post as usual, however.

    • +4

So a cheap flight during one of the busiest times - doesn't that make it an even better deal??

      • +25

I'm not sure if you're joking or not. There's already a plethora of threads both on Reddit and TripAdvisor (whichever you prefer) detailing exactly why going to Japan during Golden Week is a nightmare.

For the downvotes - it's totally fine to disagree with me, but if you're thinking of going during this period, please do your research first on what you actually CAN do during the Golden Week timeframe.

        • +2

This is good advice and I don't understand all the negs, I was going to comment the same thing.

        • I've been to Japan a few times during golden week, it must be because flights are cheaper at that time. Japan is busy no matter when you go so I wouldn't let golden week put you off if you're keen to go. However I always stay with family so I'm not sure on accommodation.

          • +5

@onetwothreefour: This is literally the main issue for tourists. Most accommodation is booked out months, even a year for popular ones, ahead.

            Hostels are pretty good though.

          • @onetwothreefour: We looked at having our wedding during golden week, the price for the wedding itself was slightly cheaper, but hotels in Yokohama were 3x the price of the week before and the week after.

Appreciate your thoughts, everyone is entitled to an opinion

      • +1

Thanks for the kind words, doc! :-)

    • +4

I think the deal and this issue are separate things and it doesn't warrant a neg, but the neg was useful in drawing attention to this. It would be useful if there was a third voting option for warnings and notes about things like this

    • +2

lol at the negative. everyone's entitled to their opinion but I don't see how the deal itself is bad

  • +2

A good number of these are through GotoGate, which are extremely horrendous to deal with. I see a few more on Wingie, how are they?

An extra $100 to go book directly at ANA would save those stressed brain cells

    • +4

Always book flights directly with the airline.

  • +2

I’m going before and after golden week and let’s just say the accommodation is crazy expensive compared to the past 4 times I’ve been. Definitely recommend you check hotel prices first if you have a strict budget

    • If anyone knows why so many places are already booked out and accommodation prices are so high even outside of golden week during this April/May period it would be good to know!

      • +4

My partner and I booked the week after golden week, here's why we chose to (and maybe others the same)

1- because we don't want to be there for golden week
2- needing to save the funds required for the trip.
3- Not wanting to go in the middle of summer or typhoon season
4- Not wanting to wait until japan autumn 2024.
(edit) 5- Japan has recently fully reopened for tourism

All acommodation of ours has been booked for tokyo, kyoto, osaka and then tokyo again but I was under the impression a lot of hotels don't like to book out 6 months in advance.
We paid a total of $1,616.03 for 15 nights of 3/4 star accomodation (excluding a one night stay in a $550p/n ryokan)

        • Any chance you could DM me an itinerary / list etc?

        • Me too please, would like some idea on accommodation in those cities if you don't mind sharing. Looking to plan our first trip in Japan next year.

          • @Nightmare9: You may have to change your settings, I don't have the ability to message you

        • +2

I am a Japanese and I totally agree with you. I recon the week after Golden week is one of the best seasons for traveling. Weather is usually very good and the leaf of trees are in light green colour and beautiful. I like it better than cherry blossom season.

        • We also planning to visit in next year, can you please send me your itinerary and accomodation list to get some idea.. thanks

        • Hey can you please DM me as well your itinerary… Thanks in advance

        • Just post it here….

          • @Nalar: Why should I post something I have spent my time working on with potential to reveal my personal information onto a public forum where a majority of the users like to use an alias?

            • @frforreal: I mean your sending it randoms you don't know so I figured you wanted to be stalked

        • Hi frforreal, we are planning to visit Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto during the 2nd half of April next year and scanning for places to stay. If you can DM the accommodation names where you are staying that would be much appreciated as we are struggling and most places seem quite expensive. AM interested in the ryokan as well as a one off experience that may be worth it. Many thanks

        • Any chance you could DM me itinerary/booking?

        • Itinerary please :)
Planning to book a family holiday for next yesr
