La Marzocco Linea Mini Coffee Machine + Bonus 12 Month Coffee Subscription $6,799.20 Delivered (Was $8,499) @ La Marzocco

2050

I follow LM on Instagram and just noticed this promotion. While stocks last..

I purchased this machine 2 years ago and I use it every day. Yes it is very very expensive and no I do not use Aldi beans with my machine.

Also comes with a 12 month subscription to Single O (12 X 1KG bags I believe) which would work out to around $700 depending on which beans they let you pick.

Edit: Looks like the bundle is also on sale. The mazzer electric grinder usually goes for around $1200

What beans do you use with your milk coffee? I'm always looking for a recommendation

    • +19

Ona - Raspberry Candy is my absolutely favorite, anything they roast is generally very good. I also really like Little Marionette!

      • Bookmarked thanks

      • +6

I've got an Ona cafe near work that I go to on the regular. Raspberry Candy isn't my usual go to, but I like their Maple quite a bit and will have a Raspberry Candy every now and then. Guess I'll have to try Little Marionette! If you're a fan of Raspberry candy check out African Mailman by Zest

        • +3

+1 for ONA maple. Ona aspen is good as well.

      • Just bought a 1kg bag of Raspberry Candy and Maple. How would one best store them once opened, if we only wanted to use them on special occasions?

        • +1

Stored in the freezer in vacuum sealed bags in portions.

          • @zsuetam: Do you cut a 1kg bad into 20g portions or what do you do?
Currently sitting on 2.5kg coffee that is one week old and will probably take me 3 no this to get through by myself…

            • @MrBillions: I’d suggest vaccum sealing some of this coffee to keep it fresh. I use 500g in about 2-3 weeks. Anymore I just see as a waste and loses its freshness

            • @MrBillions: I divide into 500g bags. Defrost when necessary. Each will last me 1-2 weeks.

        • +5

Stored coffee beans become stale coffee beans pretty swiftly - I drink a kilo a month and can certainly taste the difference when I open a fresh bag.
So I suggest you enjoy your fancy beans over the next month, and when you want so for a special occasion, buy a fresh 250g pack.

          • @mskeggs: Do they even become stale in an airtight jar container or vacuum sealed bags? How would that differ from a sealed coffee bag?

            • +1

@antik: I have an airtight jar and it certainly delays the staleness but still better to freeze the ones you won't use.

            • +1

@antik: A sealed coffee bag or container still contains oxygen surrounding the beans. This will interfere with the beans freshness. Hence vaccum sealing the bags to remove the oxygen content and prevent moisture also.

        • FYI I found Raspberry Candy tasted best 3-4 weeks after roast

          • @johnnytran: Assuming we are buying beans, pretty much any roast needs to sit for 2 weeks before use. Sweet spot may be at 4 weeks, 6 weeks likely is getting stale- assuming airtight storage <20C and a couple of openings to replenish your hopper.

An all this is from roast, not purchase date, therein lies the problem for most people

        • Maybe I'm more pedantic… but I wouldn't want to be using beans that have been opened for more than a week. I think you definitely notice the difference in taste. So buy small enough bags that it doesn't have to be opened any longer than that.

In terms of time since roast, I wouldn't want to be using them much more than 3 weeks past roast. If you're a cafe and are using the entire bag in a day, then you can be a little more precise on exact days (so eg day 10, or 14). But when you're using a bag over a week, you need to give yourself a window.

Personally, I use about 250g a week. So I buy 2x250g every fortnight as part of a subscription (there is a 2 bag minimum for the subscription, but if there wasn't I'd get a bag a week). I open the first bag about 7 days after roast and use that until about 14 days, and then the second bag gets used from 14-21 days. Then I move on to the next delivery.

+1 for little marionette and not being a ajro.

      • How is it compared st ali orthodox?

      • When mentioning little marionette I have to refer to their Sanchez blend for the preferred bean.
A good everyday cheap bean is Ruby Tuesday from Crema coffee garage.
        https://cremacoffeegarage.com.au/ruby-tuesday-rt.html
Their more premium blend black caviar is also nice https://cremacoffeegarage.com.au/black-caviar-500g-1.html

      • +1 for raspberry candy. I just swapped to Aspen to try because it's a bit cheaper where I live but I feel that raspberry candy is better.

      Vittoria Mountain grown beans ….

      • Lol 9 negs! This is a bargain site, and you're getting negged for a decent quality suggestion that regularly goes on sale for $22/kg. Is it coffee snob approved, guess not, but it's what I buy and I love it. I work from home so make about 3-4 coffees a day, don't really see myself spending $80/kg

        • But then again, this is a deal for a $7000 coffee machine, so this is the upper echelon of ozbargain

        • +2

Why is there a somewhat common misconception that bargain means low cost around here?

        • +1

It's not a decent coffee though. and definitely overpriced.
if you like vittoria coffee, you are better off going to a local cafe and asking to buy a bag of their beans. it would be fresher than the stuff you get in woolies which is horrible at the best of times.

          • @maverickjohn: Sure, everyone has their own opinion - i say it's decent you say it's not. Welcome to the internet :D

            • @quarkgun: Completely agree with you on the opinion aspect, but as a general rule for coffee beans try to buy fresh when possible. Stale beans don't tend to compare well in general to fresh roasted beans

              • @maverickjohn: Yeah agree totally, not sure how fresh beans from woolies are though, I always assumed that the high volume would lean towards fresher beans being available, but who knows :)

      Five senses Compton Road

      • I really like their Samambia and have about 4 other bags of their beans to try. I didnt think too much of dark horse but I'll give Compton Rd a chance next order

        • how long do beans stay good for? i bought a kg from veneziano and i'm storing them in an airtight container, but i open the container up to twice a day to scoop out 18gms of beans.. i'm wondering if i should opt for 250gm bags instead

          • @tommynolips: Air tight container should help a fair bit. Ideally you want to use them between 14 to ~30 days after they have been roasted, but that is for ideal coffee. Basically, if it still tastes alright, you're fine. If you wanted to make the most you could freeze 500g when you get them and pull them out once the first 500g is done? A 250g bag lasts me about a week most of the time, sometimes less

            • +1

@Intoxicoligist: Thanks :) a 250gm bag generally lasts me 7-10 days as well. I started buying the 1kg bags to save some money, plus I got a fancy airtight "airscape" container so hopefully i'm not losing too much freshness by not opting for the 250gm backs.

    • Industry Beans - Fitzroy St

    • I normally rotate through whatever is available on Direct Coffee. Have been digging Pillar lately

    • +2

Small Batch Roasting Co - Candyman
      Zest Coffee Roasters - Corcovado
      Tim Adams - Doctor

Those three are my regular rotation - they all make excellent milk coffees. Candyman and Doctor are medium roasts, Corcovado slightly darker. Also do Ona Raspberry Candy and a few other scattered when I want to mix it up.

      • +1

Zest Corco by a (profanity) milleeee, good choices here though.

      • +2

    • What beans do you use with your milk coffee? I'm always looking for a recommendation

Dunno. I've to ask my local barista.

    • These are nice and cheap!

    • +2

You're not all roasting your own? I buy my green beans for $14-16.50/kg for most, and occassionally $80/kg for a geisha, then roast on a home built roaster with a heat gun.

Is it the same as roasting on a commercial drum roaster? No. Is it still better than I'll get at 95% of cafes, definitely.

If you're interested in a hobby & not just an addiction, you can buy small benchtop roasters as well. check out https://coffeesnobs.com.au for fellow home roasting cheapskates ;-)

        • +1

hahaha, they do look so good, basically one of a kind

          • +3

@thesainter: Essentially yeah, they gave me a list of things I could do to it and I just said "yes". Their "ready to go" model costs 10.5k so ill leave it up to imagination what mine cost + matching mazzer grinder haha

Buy now think later. True OzB.

  • +3

Strange that LM are discounting this to a point it's almost competing with their Micra… I mean if you're spending 6k on a machine, $800 isn't that big of a step up.

Is there any real difference between the two beyond size/boiler capacity?

    • +1

I believe the cool touch steam wand is an upgrade on the mini and portafilters out of the box are different.

    • +1

Micra still costs more than the Mini did pre covid

    • +1

I mean why would anyone at all buy the mini I guess!

    • I'm sure a new version coming soon

  • +14

For us frugal Ozbargainers. It's Moccona instant coffee. 😄😂

    • +1

You might as well go black and gold 😋

      https://store.riverfresh.com.au/lines/b-gold-coffee-pdr-tin-…

    • +3

Try the Victoria freeze dried coffee in the moccona style jars.
I find it tastes better, and on special is cheaper (recently $18 400g at Coles).

I don’t find instant coffee a substitute for real coffee, more a different drink. Sometimes I have tea, sometimes espresso, and sometimes instant, sometimes even milo.

      • Freeze dried coffee is real coffee, brewed, then freeze dried. It's an expensive process.

      • +1

Sometimes an up and go… all depends what kind of sh*t you want that morning

    • What's wrong with Blend 43 Espresso? ;-)

Now what’s wrong with the ALDI beans lol

    • +11

I think Aldi beans are great for the price.

And that's with me getting into coffee cira 2009 and family use to run a cafe as well as background in sourcing coffee in SE Asia.

    • +4

Actually Aldi beans are quite good and I drink far too much coffee.
      Perhaps that's the issue.

    • +1

The dark beans are actually awful

Yet to try the medium roast, but their single origins are pretty decent for $15/kg (in saying that, I’m not a huge fan of the Honduras or Guatemala but would rather either of them over the dark blend)

      • +1

        Medium is enjoyable.

      • Darker roast go stale faster than light roast

  • +6

Have forwarded to our office manager to buy 😂

    • +12

      lol good luck.
I can just imagine the shitshow of people who have never use a coffee machine trying to figure this out.
We have two Gaggia automatic coffee machines in my office and people still fk them up on the daily, saw some stooge adding instant coffee into the hopper one time.

      • +8

Omg some things cannot be un seen

saw some stooge adding instant coffee into the hopper one time

      • +8

I can't stress this enough. Putting this in an office would be a nightmare, the one or two people willing to learn how to use it would spend forever cleaning other people's messes.

      • +2

It’s a small office, everyone loves coffee too I’m sure we will figure it out #teambuildingactivity

      • +7

My wife's workplace had a couple of (from memory) ECM machines and grinders put in. Full training session and everything from the supplier. My wife said at one stage people were complaining that one of the machines was putting out old tasting, weak and just plain horrible coffee.

She went had had a look (she was the resident expert) and the idiots were just treating it like a full auto, and had left the portafilter AND the puck in for days, and just kept running water through it over and over and over to make their coffees!

        • So is it better that they did that and called out something was wrong or if they had just continued and said "mmm this is the best tasting coffee ever, worth every penny!"

        • haha that is messed up

        • LOL that is so gross.

        • Oh gosh I cannot imagine drinking days old coffee grounds lol that is terrible

      • Many years ago (pre-nespresso) our hr team decided to purchase a super auto, and knowing I was a coffee snob asked me what I thought.
"I'm sure everyone else will like it".

We had a service contract for it though, so someone came in weekly to do maintenance like clean out the manky milk system because my lazy colleagues would invariably leave milk in the system & I sure as hell wasn't taking responsibility for cleaning it out (mainly because I wouldn't use it)

    • 2 X Oracle Touch machines for that price :)

  • +8

Oh my god I don’t need this I don’t need this I DON’T NEED THIS

    • +1

Don't think anyone NEEDS it, but do you want it? It's a good deal.. do it, DO IT!!

      • I think I’ve convinced the other half. I’M DOING THIS

Upgrading from a BDB which I’ve been (mostly) happy with, but am looking for something more consistent.

Looked into the plumb in kit, probably will just use the reservoir with filtered water. Looks like you need to install an in-line water filter with the plumb in kit to maintain warranty…

Would love some grinder recommendations if anyone has any…

Also… I’ve noticed a lot of people mock the price, or point out that the payback on such an expensive machine is borderline impossible. I’m buying because I’m passionate about coffee, and enjoy this as a hobby. It’s a bit sad that we feel we have to justify ourselves to others, but for what it’s worth, this is my only vice. Leave me be please :p

I ended up changing my order from a Linea Mini to a Linea Micra

This review convinced me - https://youtu.be/lUEsGwh1GC8

          Issues:

          • Easier machine to work with for a tech
          • Solenoid and all the other stuff in the front and more easily accessible
          • Much faster heat up time at 5-10min vs 15-25min
          • Is likely able to keep up with my family and friends coming over on weekends for a coffee catch-up - usually make 4- 8 cups of coffee on weekends if that occurs
          • Fits my bench more easily than the linea mini
          • annoying that you have to use the app to change temperature but whatevs
          • The price differential is nice but not an issue.
          • bottomless portafilter on the Micra with some snap on plastic spouts for singles and double pours. My wife and I drink most of our coffees as doubles anyway.
          • smaller steam wand on the Micra can be potentially annoying? I will find out in October.

I'm now thinking of upgrading my two stage water filtration system to a reverse osmosis system for the Micra.

The last place where I had reverse osmosis water was Light Coffee when they had a space in East Brisbane. The water was amazing there and their espresso and filter coffees were some of the best I've ever had from a Brisbane roaster.

The LM chat said that all the Micras are expected sometime in October. I was tempted to buy the red but ended up getting the stainless.

I have a mazzer super jolly at home. I was thinking of upgrading it but there is no real point ATM.

I have the Breville dual boiler too. The steam wand has given up the ghost and I can't tell if it's the ball valve assembly and also some circuitry issue. It's a good machine and I can just get a new one. But I don't like throwing away gadgets and like things that last.

I'm keen on the linea micra now. I tried to dissuade the wife from this purchase but she has also gotten target fixation and she wants the linea too.

We have both worked in the coffee industry previously and most of our time as baristas was spent behind either a linea, gb5 or synesso. So the linea micra is going to bring back some of those old-school feels.

          • +1

@ankor: Hey mate, they’re all good points and I did consider the micra… but I just like the bigger machine. No real rationale behind it (well, lots of reasons, just all little trivial ones - similar to yours!)…but mostly I just like it :p I’ve got the bench space and despite saying I won’t plumb it in, I know I will eventually.

            Congrats on your purchase!

            • -1

              @jackary: Thanks!

Yeah I measured up the space where I have the Breville dual boiler and decided to be sensible with the Micra.

Here's a review of the LM Mini from one of the third wave US coffee gurus from back in 2015 - https://www.home-barista.com/blog/la-marzocco-linea-mini-rev…

I almost pulled the trigger on the mini, damn the space issues lol

I hope you get to enjoy an upgrade as well!
