Roof Vent/ Whirly Birds Installation and Price

First time posting. Apologies if I have got everything right.

I found 2 x New whirly birds on Gumtree in Sydney for $80, which I'm happy with the price as Bunnings has them for $74 each.

My question is. Are these easy to install or do I need a professional to install them?

Any special Tools needed?

Will I need to install 2 whirly birds on 3 bedroom house or is one enough ?

I don't know how to post a picture of the ad or how to copy it .

It's on gumtree/ Lalor Park. Roof Vent $55 each or there are two for $80

Stix.

    Colorbond or tile roof?

Yes, they are easy to install but you need to do it correctly or you will get water ingress.

    My mum always said…

Never apologise if you get everything right

The whirlybird industry will tell you they're fabulous, but I reckon they're close to useless. My neighbours installed a couple and they would agree in hindsight. You can easily resell as they're BNIB. I have a powered fan in my roof - it can move a considerably greater air volume on a summer's day than a passive fan. Have you noticed how many in your 'hood are no longer rotating?

  • ( If the mission is a cooler roof space and not just FOMO of the whirlies.)

    Heard good wraps on these
More exxy, but they work. You only fit them once.

  • It's fairly straight forward, but if you're unsure, get a professional. A roofer / roof plumber will be able to install these for you.
Last thing you want is to unintentionally cause a roof leak.

Installing will require the whirly birds to be 'flashed' i.e. waterproofed. The extent will vary depending on what type of roof you have. Example of Metal Roofing and Tiled roof..

You'll also need to clarify if you're intending them to vent various rooms, or just the roof cavity. If you're planning on venting rooms, then it'll also require ducts and indoor vents.

    Thank You

  • My neighbor had 2 installed on his single story 4 bedroom brick place and the amount of difference was awesome… The roof cavity temps dropped quite a bit.

    Well worth it.

You spending a lot of time in your neighbours roof cavity?

    • The roof cavity temps dropped quite a bit.

      Well worth it.

Did the temperature drop affect the rooms of the house (i.e. where people are actually spending majority of their time) though?

Whirly birds cool the roof cavity well when placed on a West or South face (in the southern hemisphere).

How a cooler roof cavity affects temps in the home however depends on the ceiling insulation, and potential for draughts to move air between the two spaces.

Remember that IR radiation is a relevant form of energy transfer also, not just air-conduction, which is mostly how elevated temperatures above transfer into the air below.

Usually vents do a good job at cooling a house. So why doesn't everyone have one? probably the same reason why so many people have black roofs, givben they do the worst job a roof can do at reflecting heat from the people sheltering beneath it.

Silver are typically the best, behind just silver roofs with vents ;-)

    • … on days that are windy.

True, but even when not windy, heat in the cavity can rise more freely from the eaves, up and through to the top ridge.

Installation is dead easy, one timber screw holds the strap to a batten, and the included flashing works with the tiles and gravity to retain a water seal like the tiles it replaces. Just don't fall off the roof. Take precautions, and beware slippery lichens and dust.

Very easy to fit - assuming you have the basic tools, common sense and your roof slope isn't extreme. Have put several on myself.

Now bear in mind studies on them fid they don't move anywhere near the air mass that a powered roof fan does…but they're also low maintenance, I suspect a lot of those solar roof fans pack it in. You will need two.

They won't make anywhere near as much difference as proper insulation, reflective sarking etc but will assist a little.
