Great price and by most accounts this is the best streaming device available. But I am very hesitant to dip my toe into the Apple ecosystem!

It's not really getting locked into the ecosystem and unlike iPhone and iPad, you're not really purchasing apps etc. You do need iPhone to use the screen calibration feature though but heard it's not that accurate

For Sony x85k already with Apple airplay, do you still need Apple tv for upscaling? How much percentage of increasing video quality?
You buy it for a more fluid OS and not the upscaling. The processors on the TVs generally struggle if you are streaming local High quality content
x85k, you probably won't notice much at all on that TV, but the OS is quite bad, so at least this will improve navigation/use of TV
