Australia Post - What Is Happening with The Costs?!

First up, I get it. Inflation is running wild and all that. That said, even with that context, today surprised me.

I had some docs (about 5 x A4 pages) to mail to Melbourne. I had a padded envelope I'd bought from them the other day and today went in to lodge the docs via express post. The lady at the counter says 'OK thats $18.50.' I said "$18.50?!?" She said "yes thats for up to 5KG."

Is this legitimately the price for posting documents or has she treated it like its a package?!?

Keen to see if anyone has found similar

Thanks!

Don't know why you were not offered their prepaid express envelope? It should range $9.5-$11. check this

Yeah they were charging you for a package, not a letter.

Probably incorrectly, depends on whether the padded envelope made it thicker than the limit or not (used to be 10mm or 20mm I think?).

It's 5mm so a padded envelope would almost certainly be over. Not sure why a document needs a padded envelope, but yeah OP got charged for a parcel.

5 pages should be a document in an envelope.
You could have bought an express post envelope.
If you fold the document, it will be less. Smaller envelope.

    why padded…

    • It's a 'Dear John' letter.

    • +2

Some people want to bubble wrap their documents.
      Just in case.
For example, it could be a Will and then they would box it up also.
      Lol.

Once over a certain thickness items move from letters to packages. Sounds like your padded bag pushed it over this :(

Don't use a padded envelope next time.

You chose the wrong packaging so paid the lazy man tax. Thanks for your service.

In the penalty box. That was quick.

    • why in penalty?

      • I'm guessing it's an alt account

Documents over 500g is considered a parcel.

    • There is no way 5x a4 pages is anywhere near 500g.

      • +2

Anything thicker than 20mm is a parcel. Chosen padded envelope exceeded this metric.

  • Come on OP. You are getting the most reliable , 5* , trustworthy, fastest postal service in the world. And you get to subsidise it as well. (Just don't ask to know who's handling your mail and what their background might be).

    Cheap at half the price.

  • They sell you that to make more money.

Next time just fold it up and put in a normal envelope.

  • I post “priority”. Nearly as quick as express and much cheaper.

Do you research and know exactly what you want before you post anything then you cant be taken advantage of. Knowledge is power as they say.

  • 5 A4 sheets mailed flat would cost $2.40 for the stamps and whatever else you pay for the envelope. Try about 30c each at Officeworks.

Worried about the sheets being damaged? Put a piece of thin cardboard in with them. No need to pay $18.50.

  • Print on thinner paper!
    Condense with ChatGPT….

  • 5kg of documents is like four reams of paper yeah?

    • 1 ream of 500 sheets A4 paper 80gsm is 2.6kg.

      • Still a lot of documents to send to someone. Email probably better.

        • The OP wanted to send 5 pages, not 500.

          • @cupcake: But silly to select the 5kg pouch then. Unless those pages are 1kg each.

  • so op uses the wrong way to send paper and then blames auspost, lol what a wild world we live in.
Ive seen the abuse the auspost staff get at my local auspost area and its crazy to see how entitled people are, op is probably one of them.

    • I find local POs to be great. (be nice ppl) That does not, however, let the actual org,it's staff in the field, systems and procedures off the hook. They need to be gutted at the top via a full and proper Royal Commission, and re-staffed with fit for purpose, efficient and reliable and honest Australians.

      • well said but the op being entitled is what blew my mind lol

        • LOL how have you made that inference? Nowhere was he or she rude to anyone. OP ust asked on OzB if those costs seem right.

People need to stop using this Forum as a place to just attack others for no reason. If it makes you feel better, good for you I guess
