Drone Lost, Won't Return Back

Hi there

Today i am using my dji mini3 pro which i hardly use since i bought it last year. I am flying on top of mountain, when reached the certain point, screen shows low battery warning then automatically put on returning home feather, so lost control of drone. When drone was 300m away, then battery was flat and couldn't make it, so i lost my drone now - assume in of top trees which there is no way i can reach it etc.

So is there anything i can do for this, or just bad luck today.

Thanks

You should be able to find the exact coordinates from the recorded flight log on the controller and go there and see if you can locate the drone.

Did you have insurance? And does your insurance require that you recover the broken drone?

i bought from JBHI, and i don't think i bought insurance (Care) that time. It is on the hills, at bottom there are bushes and trees, and noway can get it down etc

        there is always a way

Indeed, machete your way through the undergrowth or get a helicopter to lower you down on a winch.

          This is the way.

Buy another drone to recover your drone?

    • How high?

You lost your toy due to battery issues. What do you want us to do about it?

  • At least it didn't start able bushfire….wait…not yet? Seriously could it catch fire??

    • Are the batteries made my Samsung SDI?

  • Go for a hike in the mountains to retrieve it. Other hikers may find it otherwise.

  • Did you have a permit to fly it?

Edit: don't leave me hanging Jimothy. I wasn't quick enough to read it.

lol….buy a drone and go look for it???

Hold a memorial service for the drone.

if everyone cries, it will flood the world and ur drone will float back to u

  • Stihl:

    eeeeeeeeeeeee!!

  • Upon realising it wouldn't make it home you should have positioned it over a safe area to land. Then when the battery ran out it would have automatically landed and you could go recover it.

See if AFP can give you access to satellite surveillance

Use the dji care that I'm sure you paid for due to the very high chance of drone loss/damage, they will give you another one after you pay a small excess.

  • Loook up rescuing a drone on youtube…. numerous ideas..

Can't believe no-one has spotted the most important bit. OP which MOUNTAIN were you on top of?

BTW what were you filming and why?

    • Personally I think all recreational drone flying near substantial vegetation should be totally banned Sep-May
And banned over whales during breeding/calving season

    The world has enough FIGJAM

    • Drone flying isn't recreational, it's pain management self-medication.

300m away? Not sure I'd be advertising that here. Doesn't sound like line of sight. What are the CASA rules again? I hope you know them.

Or perhaps you have a licence to fly not line of sight… in which case you wouldn't be asking here.

    • You can't see 300m away on the side of a hill?

      • You can't see a 20cm white object with thin arms against the sky at that distance.

Op has confirmed lower down this page my suspicions this was not line of sight flight. The drone was 2 km away…

The very first thing I did after buying my DJI Mini 3 Pro was to fork out another $119 for DJI Care Refresh.

OP, for your next drone purchase considering taking out a refresh plan within 48 hours of drone activation.

They probably shouldn't buy another one…

  • Should have stuck to the coast…

I feel for you though, it almost happened to me (but it eventually came back), but the whole time I was shitting bricks…I did have the DJI Carr Refresh though.

don't the videos automatically upload, when my friend lost her drone she was able to pull up the footage of where it landed and then she just got it out of the tree

    • Not from the drone but you can screen record the controller.

Should have put an AirTag on it. Go back in time and do that.

      Good suggestion.

  • You should be able to get the last reported position from find my drone.

Charge the battery to full before you use it. How about paragliding off the mountain to try and spot your drone, then hire a helicopter with a lift kit to rescue drone.

Call the Police search and rescue they may help try Bondi surf patrol as well.

  • You can purchase a new drone with dji care and watch your battery levels next time.

Must have been pretty damn far for it not to make it back, you get a good few minutes warning when it starts beeping at you about low battery.

    • 2km away, on 40% battery, didn't make it

      • That aint right, unless you had an epic head wind.
You can easily knock out 8-10 km in sport mode (total distance) on a full battery depending on wind and temperature.

When flying a drone you need to follow a strict deployment checklist, about #13 on my list is after setting home location fly it a short distance (10m) and ensure it returns to home. Sometimes they will not correctly register the home location, and this is not something you want to know at critical battery level.

Also, bad practice to fly until critical battery level - this is asking for trouble in difficult terrain - always finish a mission with 25% battery remaining to allow for unforeseen circumstances.

Chalk it up to a learning lesson.

    • when have 40% battery, decided to fly back, but on the way back, auto home return was activated then drone does it own way, then didn't make it

  • Finding it in scrub very slim chance. But personally i would go look for it. Having said that some people get lost if they are 5 meters from a track.

If you decide to look for it make a early morning start, food, water, phone service?, compass, wise clothing tell someone where your going and print out a map showing other tracks, creeks nearby in case you get disoriented.

Dont start looking for it in the late afternoon visibility
wise the drone will be harder to spot and you dont want to be lost in the dark.

If you haven't found it in a couple hours its a loss.

    • thanks, unfortunately there is no road to get down, probably needs a rope to put on the waist then … It's bad luck i assume

  • Sorry but a good drone pilot always flies with enough battery power left to return home. Lesson learnt.
