        This brand is rubbish

I've got a bottle of this in the fridge, very nice sauce, it actually is green. Perhaps bad colour correction on web site.

  • Greens is the piss weak that is aimed at children under 2?

huy fong is the best sriracha, made in california, mostly jalapeños so more chilies and less other stuff so great chili flavour without excessive heat. coles and woolies seen to be out of stock for the last year which is why they have been promoting trident and other brands. one report said huy fong shortage was due to drought in usa, another said he had a falling out with his main grower of over 28 years underwood ranches . either way hard to get in australia.
down to my last 2 small bottles, had to pay rrp of $6 each,

Original owner that built the empire is a legend, he is getting old though. Rumour has it that he passed on the business to family and is now run by his son who has an MBA, but no real world experience, that's when things start to do downhill.

      • Classic case of handing the family run business down to the kid who has no interest in the family run business, probably.

Good video came out last week talking about the shortage - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYdU1X2p2ro
Either way, hope they can get supply operational again, is my goto sauce for anything and everything

      • I watched this video the other day too, found it super interesting and had no idea there was a shortage. I feel like in the past few years there have been a whole bunch of sriracha sauces come out in similar looking bottles but I didn't know why, made sense considering there was a shortage of the OG.

That video makes Huy Fong look like the bad guy but some comments were saying that Underwood was charging them a lot for peppers.

I went down the rabbit hole on this one!

The farmer (Underwood), one of their main suppliers, was in a long term contract to provide the peppers and purchased additional land in order to meet this contract. Huy Fong was owed $1.4m in refunds due to an overpayment in 2016 and so they sued Underwood Ranches. Yes, they got it back, but then they had to pay $23.3m for breach of contract in the countersuit, lol.

What else did they do? Huy Fong tried to grow their own peppers in Mexico and failed. They tried to hire Underwood's COO to 'form a new chile-growing concern'. They provided confidential information to Underwood's competitors. Word is no other producers are willing to risk $$$ upfront with them to supply them with the peppers needed to make their sirarcha.

Case details here https://casetext.com/case/huy-fong-foods-inc-v-underwood-ran… and an excerpt below:
"The jury could reasonably conclude that Huy Fong had no intention of keeping those promises when they were made. There is evidence to show that Tran had long planned to cut Huy Fong's ties to Underwood. As far back as 2014, Tran was planning to form Chilico, a company that would purchase peppers from farmers other than Underwood, allowing Huy Fong to cut its ties to Underwood. In 2015, Tran began his campaign to hire Roberts away from Underwood. Roberts was the key employee in Underwood's pepper production. Tran informed Roberts that Huy Fong was breaching the contract to purchase Underwood's 2017 harvest just days after making it. Tran waited until he knew Craig was on vacation before informing Roberts. Finally, in 2016, Tran, who had never before showed an interest in harvest operations, used a drone to video Underwood's harvest. After he cut ties with Underwood, he used the video to show other farmers how to harvest efficiently."

      • Great story!

While this isn’t the original sriracha sauce (the bloke never patented the name cause he knew his sauce was the best and the others basically advertise for him) this green sauce is actually pretty good. It’s actually like a sriracha light - so good for kids and those that can’t handle the original. Has a sweet tang to it (basically what the first comment said). Well worth having a bottle in the fridge at this price.

Personally I think it tastes different but is delicious in its own way.

  • cant stand the smell
