FYI; If you are going to book these - book direct with AirAsia as addons will be far cheaper in comparison to booking with a third party and then adding baggage either through the third party when booking or with AirAsia afterwards.

Your username checks out as well ;)

        • Everyone’s user name checks out! 🎉🎉

    • We would like to travel from Ho Chi Minh to other cities. Would this be worth it compared to hiring a van? Do they normally run on time compared to Jetstar?

Are these Russian planes and how big are the windows? Don't want to fall out.

    • +1

      French made A320s
Dont worry their maintenance program is one of the best - same as their pilot training program, only a few planes have fallen out of the sky

  • What's the cheapest way to get there to take advantage of these flights

      Walk then swim.

  • Has anyone travelled from Sydney to Bangkok by using Air Asia? Their price is unbeatable. Would you mind sharing your experience? Thanks

Airasia is fine, ive used them a lot to get to asia and around, e.g. malaysia, singapore, thailand. I would compare them to a jetstar but with better food.

I dont care much for KL airport, where you will have to transfer but cant complain for the price.

      • Yes. The price is very good. How about the seats space which is narrower than the standard Qantas flying from Sydney to Bangkok? I know they don't provide any food or entertainment.

    • it felt like any other budget airline to me, no issues. the saving is $ over other airlines pays for all my hotels etc so worth it to get there as cheap as possible. I always ask kindly for an isle seat etc

    • Australia flights are on Air Asia X, which is very much a step up from the domestic service.

      • I am very tempted to book for my next family's trip using Air Asia. I have been using Qantas for very long time.

        • Bring your own entertainment, and don't expect free alcohol. If tall, consider booking one of the exit rows. Still a lot cheaper than Qantas.
Best deal is if you travel light. Who needs a suitcase for a holiday in SE Asia?

          • @bargaino: Mainly because of travelling with young kids (11,9), I wouldn't have such hesitation if I travel by myself.

    • I ended up on an Air Asia X flight from Bangkok to Sydney as one of my connecting flights recently. Was trying to get the cheapest fare possible and no doubt it contributed to that.

Had never flown Air Asia X so didn't know just how budget it was. No entertainment units on board, meals & drinks (apart from water) cost extra.

I think the thing I missed the most was not having any power in the seat, so can't charge phone or laptop. If you bring your own device the battery will need to last the length of the flight.

Didn't pay for any food as I had a delicious seafood meal in Suvarni airport for ~27 AUD.

There were a couple of unintended benefits. The economy seats have a surprising amount of leg room when everything's stripped away. With most people not eating the interruption of food service was very brief, and obviously I didn't have to pay attention to it at all since I wasn't eating. Normally on an international flight i feel like i have to get my "value" by not being asleep when the meal service happens. End result was I spent a large portion of the flight sleeping.

      • Would you say that you would catch the same flight again? Your experience sounds not bad considering the value and price. I don't know if kids can survive the long flight.

        • +1

I've flown air asia x, the planes are clean, and the plane food is surprisingly good (it's still microwave food though)

BYO android tablets and battery chargers, it's not worth paying more for entertainment.

The only budget airline I would avoid is scoot, their addons are exorbitantly priced and they refuse to even provide water

          • +1

@greatlamp: I've flown Scoot from Melbourne to Singapore before… in both economy and their equivalent of business class.

So ScootPlus (business) is way better than economy… you get larger seats, meals etc included. Just be aware to compare prices as sometimes they can be a lot more expensive.

Flying in Economy is squishy.. so it's better to choose an exit seat if taller.

It's only 8 hours from Melbourne to Singapore so it's not like you'll be trapped for longer periods.

If it saves a few hundred dollars I'd do it again. Only you can decide if your kids can put up with it, but if they're 11 and 9 and have flown before, it doesn't sound impossible. Just plan something they can do on an ipad/phone that doesn't need internet.

          • @horseshoe: Thank you. Sometimes I saw the price of Air Asia is almost half of Qantas. However Air Asia seems never sold out these tickets considering the cheap price.

            • +1

@HappyBargainer: Some people are fiercely loyal to the Red Kangaroo and will fly nohing else. A lot are business travellers so they're not paying for the ticket.

I've flown Qantas and I don't get why it's considered quality - to me they're mid tier (entertainment units are a bit small, food is western fare which isn't so interesting to me). My top tier is Emirates/Etihad. I would even rate Qatar and Turkish Airlines above Qantas, although that's subjective based on the food.

              • @horseshoe: I didn't think that the food and service on Qantas from Sydney to Bangkok is good according to my experience. However I found that the choice of this router is very limited. Thai airways on this router sometimes cost even more. On the other hand, Air Asia is another option which might scared some passengers due to the name of "budget". Even myself, sometimes I am a bit of reluctant to try as it's over 9 hours flight. Emirates has cancelled this router few years ago.

  • ridiculously cheap, how are the flights not a waste of a pressurisation cycle
