Google Pixel 7 Finger Scanner Is Intolerable, Does NOT Work! Who Is Experiencing The Same?

Many have reported the Pixel 7 issues on the finger print scanner from 2022 and here we are late 2023 and still same issues. Happy generally with Pixel 7 got it cheap,Telstra deal @ $499 but no real upgrade from Mate 20 pro but the finger scanner is intolerable. I have tried over some weeks all suggestions even moving to Beta 14.5.2 and still find the finger scanner not fixed. The actual process of setup is faulty as it give no direction in registering your finger print. The Mate 20 Pro would firstly direct you to do the middle part of you finger print guiding you thru the process then moving to the outer portion of your finger print. The Pixel 7 registering of your finger gives no guidance and then fails and keeps asking to redo or leave till later?? BIG disappointment moving to a Pixel phone!! Pixel 7 Finger scanner is intolerable, who is experiencing the same?

Disowned my firstborn son for buying an iPhone, so yea nah, BIG NO!!! Persevering with the Pixel 7 for now but would go back to Mate 20 Pro, maybe even sammy before iPhone. Thanks but not an option!

      • I was anti Apple for a very long time, only used Android phones until I got jack of my fingerprint failing to unlock my phone no matter what I tried. Bought an iPhone to try, knowing there was a 30 day grace period where I could get a full refund if I hated it. I haven’t looked back since.

    Some tips from Pixel users:

I had a family member buy a Pixel from Telstra too which had a sensor with very low success rates. Ended up returning the device and getting a Samsung S23 that has a ultrasonic fingerprint sensor instead of an optical one.

    • Yeah, thanks have tried all those suggestions but without real success. When you first register it works for the first few times then its hit and miss again, tried registering same thumb etc. I actually think the finger registering process they use is flawed, it give NO guidance then times out very quickly and if you do manage to get it to register it fails after a few uses. Hard to believe that Google juggernaut cant get a fix in over a year to an ongoing issue that is vital to use of the Pixel phone.

  • I particularly like when you bump the sensor in a dark room and are suddenly blinded by a bright white circle…

I have a Pixel 6, changed the screen protector to a MaxShield Glass Pro+ 9h which works a lot better than the previous one, but still nowhere near 100%. Hope they fix this in future models or the Pixel is off my future purchase list.

I have the pixel 7a. I will not be buying a pixel again due to finger print issue and stupid light sensor switching off screen when I use it with strong back light.

I thought it was a premium phone but turns out its not.

Pixel 7 finger scanner sucks big time. End of story. It is not going to get any better. They would have done it already if they could.

I registered and reregistered my thumb numerous times with only marginal improvements. The problem is dry fingers. If you live in a dry climate it makes the problem even worse.

The only trick that helps is breathing on thumb. This makes success rate definitely better but still Pixel 3 sensor leaves Pixel 7 for dead. I know, it is a different technology and all this stuff, but for me as a consumer this does not mean a thing.

  • Works ok for me, not the best compared to the ones on the back but not the worst onscreen one I've used.

Generally doesn't like wet/moist fingers or fingers with anything on them.

    • …or fingers at all?

Thanks, good to hear you have it working! Mate 20 pro never missed, worked every time with on screen scanner. Got the pixel for the highly rated camera, but seems inferior in other features so I guess you cant have it all.

  • might be a security risk but you can set a different print with the same finger. That way the hit rate is higher but also means chances of other people getting into your phone also increased.

    • Thanks, yes tried all 4 registered on right thumb but still fails. Have set 2x right thumb, 1x right index, 1x left thumb, works best but still hit and miss.

It seems this phone has a Goldilocks Scanner? 🤔

AFOS says it can't be too dry and JimmyF says it can't be too wet…so your finger needs to be juuuust, right?

Mine has worked great pretty much every single time, and when it hasn't, it was my fault for missing the sensor entirely.

I have the 7 pro and no issues at all, absolutely fine.

    • Thanks, glad your 7pro finger scanner works well. If its not too much trouble can I ask for some guidance as yours works, so maybe I am doing something wrong? When you register your finger print does it time out? do you register more than 1 of each finger you like to use?
Thanks in advance, no problem if you don't want to answer but maybe helpful as I have tried many suggestions but none make a difference, so maybe my fingerprint is the issue!

I didn't get any issues with time out and am not sure whether this issue differs between the different pixel phones, although I'd expect the fingerprint scanner to be much the same across all models. I only registered each finger once and haven't had any problems. It performs just as well as previous non pixel phones I've had with fingerprint scanners.

        • I did see on Pixel forum someone had requested warranty, no issue after service changed his pixel screen? Seems drastic but glad to hear some have had success with scanner. Thanks for the extra info!

  • No comment other than mine is also shite.

7 pro works fine even with screen protector

  • I prefer unguided setup, because then I can use the parts of my fingers I actually want to use. Add your fingerprint several times in the way you actually want to use it - standing, sitting, lying down, both hands, bone dry, a bit sweaty. Some screen protectors can also inhibit the scanner.

  • My 7 pro is fine, no issues whatsoever. Works 9/10 times

  • is face unlock available on pixel 7?

    • +1

      Yes, face unlock works well.

  • Have created a bug report on the Pixel 7 as the Finger Scanner registration I think is the issue, has no guidance in the registration process, then repeatedly times out. Huawei mate 20 pro blinks until it registers mid section of the finger then blinks to do the outer rim of the finger and guides you thru each until all the finger is fully registered. You may have created your own bug report, if not and are having issues with Pixel 7 go to the link below and add your issue to give more weight for a fix.
