Make sure you don't try and plug in a lightning connector.

Thunderbolt and lighting? Very very frightening?

        Will you do the Fandango?

        • +2

No I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me :(

@manity: Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters…

@jv: Too late my time has come.

@manity: Are you a little silhouetto of a man?

  • Will this support output to dual screen monitors on an m1 pro 14"?

    • +1

Yes, I currently use my MBP with the screen open and extend the desktop to a 27" Display (using the Display Port).
Have had it for almost 3 years… no issues with it, but not sure what's going recently as the fan inside the unit spins up very aggressively and can be quite loud and at times quite annoying… if I unplug my MBP, it will STFU.

    • +1

Unclear. I would think so though. Can confirm the Dell Thunderbolt docks work for dual screen with the M1Pro.

    • +1

Should be fine as m1 pro 14-inch supports dual external monitors natively. No luck for the 13-inch modals.

    • +1

“M1 Pro” chips will support dual monitors via one Thunderbolt cable if that’s what you’re asking.

I’m currently running a setup with one cable in a Dell WD19TBS Thunderbolt Hub.

The HP G2 apparently has this functionality so I would assume the G4 is no different.

Nobody wants 60 fcucking hertz!!! 120hz minimum! Or at least 90 FGS!

    • +4

      AngryDad Reviews?

    • Three 5120x2880 displays at 240Hz each (720Hz in total) or it doesn't make sense even at half of that price!

      • -6

1440p@120hz is much more preferable than 4k@60hz.
60hz just looks too jerky and juddery. Its unusable in 2023. Its not 2013 anymore

        • Maybe for your gaming you want higher refresh rates, but for people who just have relatively standard productivity needs 60Hz is fine, even in 2023.

My spreadsheets and Teams calls don't really look any different with higher refresh rates.

          • -4

@itsMartin: General system usage really does feel far smoother once you're used to 120Hz. Going back to 60Hz - for any task (including spreadsheets and general OS usage) - is unpleasant. Just moving the cursor around at 60Hz is painful…

    • Lol, need a valium?

    • +1

No soup for Intel Macs, 60Hz max on 4K resolution. They gutted DSC in Big Sur and later. Catalina works fine at 4K @ 144 Hz.

  • +1

Seems to be a high failure rate on these, according to comments on previous deals. (Also reflected in 1 star reviews on amazon, from my quick look.)

    • you have removed the potential regret from my recent Kensington TB4 dock purchase, thank you :P

  • If people are complaining about this dock, what is a good budget dock? (using 2x displayport output - for my WFH setup).

  • +1

I've got one of these, works great with my Elitebook 845 G9 which operates via USB4; no issues or complaints so far (in fact I was having kernel-power failures on a Caldigit Pro dock that was causing repeated crash/reboot cycles which all stopped once I swapped over to the G4) but you may want to note two things:
    1. The Thunderbolt cable that plugs into your laptop is hardwired into the front of the dock, as sorta depicted in the OP thumbnail, and only 80cm long. Not an issue for me, but your mileage may vary.
    2. There is no headphone/mic jack on the unit, so if you need a discrete audio-out for your setup you may have to buy a DAC/dongle, like an Apple USB-C>3.5mm or an adapter.

  • This one is already discontinued and have been replaced by G5 (only 65W).

    • +1

The Thunderbolt G4 Dock is the current generation, I don't think there is a G5 at the moment. I believe you're referring to a different product, HP USB-C Dock G5. The last generation, USB-C Dock G4, is indeed discontinued.

      • you're right. Thanks for that.

  • I've got one and it's fine. Not for gaming but decent enough for work.
