Recommend a 50" LCD 1080p TV to Buy Used

Hi all, wanting to zero in on one or two models of 50 or so inch 1080p LCD tvs to buy second hand. I have a 4th gen Apple TV and am happy with 1080p. Also much more economical on limited cellular data allowance I use.

I'm looking at a Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR2 for around $100 but is there something that's a lot better than this that's a similar vintage that might be worth looking for?

Thanks for reading

The price and local availability of a specific 2nd hand TV model are very subjective.

I mean you could get 4k 50" TV for the same price used and set the Apple TV to stream at 1080p resolution.

I've seen Ozb comments on picking up TV that still works perfectly from sidewalk in affluent suburbs.

    • Thanks for the ideas but I'm not going to trawl nature strips. I've collected this way in the past but right now I'd prefer to just zero in on a particular model or two and bide my time for something that's probably been looked after pretty well.

There's KDL-52XBR2 for sale I have my eye on but I have a 46" and the uneven backlight is a bit offputting even if the sound is pretty good.

I'm betting 4k units'll be mostly cheaper makes so figured to pick up an older workhorse that was built to last

      • Nothings "built to last" these days.

        • Agree this's broadly true but the early Bravia are pretty solid, were expensive to buy and pretty well built.

          • @0jay: "early Bravia", rear projection?
            .

            • @Nugs: I was thinking around 2008 model LCDs

Dunno what did you find on MarketPlace? I have no idea where you live, your search radius and how far you are willing to drive and price this is very unique to you considering it's second hand goods…

    • Ta but the Sonys for example were a popular model so fairly common used.

I'm just hoping for some ideas about quality sets from around this vintage that I can aim for on marketplace/gumtree

Indeed my first LCD 46" that came with a bonus PS3 lasted ten years then sold it to a friend from memory although electronics back then were made to last !

        • I'm using a 46" Sony from 2008 and would be happy to continue using it except it's about 340w and the backlight's very uneven. I'm moving soon to a place with the space for a bigger screen and I'll be further back than I'm used to so seems like a good opportunity to upgrade.

Very rarely do people list the model so you can search it, normally it'll just be "50" tv" etc etc

There's often an image of the rear of the unit. There're often distinctive elements to design. Worse case the seller can answer a question or two.

Does nobody remember a unit or series that was similar vintage to the KDL that's worth looking out for?

    Panasonic plasmas.

Ta, burn-in and power consumption rule plasmas out but thanks for comin

Mine is a 2011 still going strong with minimal burn in, way better picture than the LCD garbage. Is power usage of a single tv really a big deal?

        • Gobbles up the juice though that's for sure. No doubt they'll give a really nice picture though.

I average 1kwh per day so I'm pretty careful with consumption.

@0jay: Not sure how 1kwh a day is even possible. I'd rather enjoy myself by having the glory of plasma.

Travel distance & timing is going to impact the value of a 2nd hand tv more than model/brand considerations.

If you dont want garbage stick to the bigger known brands instead of some white label re-badge, other than that, just whatever is closest & available.

Rather than picking out a model instead find a local possibility then chuck the model into google to see if they have any known defects. Looking at models first is going at it backwards for second hand stuff.

    • Ta mate, I limit myself to pretty tight radius and as to timing, there's no rush. It's the reason I'm asking here so I can keep an eye out in case something really good pops up. Most folks'd prefer a newer 4k even if it's not particularly flash otherwise.

Have landed on the KDL-55HX853 as probly the best I can hope for so at least have something to aim for. Likely I'll settle for something not as good that pops up not too far away but good to have a reference point.

If you can find a used KDL-50w800, they were great. Even better, the 55W900a.

        • Thanks!
