  • We got this last year, its great. Definitely consider if you need one.

    • Curious as to why this would be better than a popup Coleman or something along those lines?

Like it looks like it'd handle windy conditions excellent but otherwise I don't know. I'm probably missing something here

It took us maybe 5 minutes to set it up the first time, two people that have never camped.
It has many little details as to bring in power pockets, attach lanterns inside, solar panle pocket at the top of the tent and many more.
At first i went to anaconda and then bcf, both of them said this tent is better than anything they had.

        • That super quick, did you make up the poles and everything and it still didn't take heaps?

Sounds like there's a lot of thought put into the tent internals which is really nice too.

          • @lancesta: That was to open up the bag, seperate the poles and setting up the tent. Tho poles are colour coated as well as where they go in the tent. We did buy it cheaper though, around $370 from Harbour Town in Adelaide.

        • Wow 5 minutes. Always thought tents with poles take time to setup (and can be unwieldy)

      • I looked at the Coleman Northstar darkroom 10p tent (instant up) and went with this one for a few reasons. It was slightly lighter (26.7kg vs 30kg), the packed size was shorter on its longest length (68cm vs 128cm), which meant it will fit into the car easier and I was a bit hesitant of the longevity of the easy up poles joints. They would be a bit more of a pain to replace if they failed compared to a standard tent pole.

I have a retreat 180, over 10 years old now. (Love it.) I don't think the poles have changed much in that time - still fibreglass, somewhat lousy for tents in this price range. One of my poles broke about 4-5 years ago, managed to Macgyver it and got through the few days I was away, but (paid for) replacement was pretty quick via mail order. Gotta treat them with some care when setting up.

@afoveht: Glad it's made to last, my family one was of this style and I can't fault it we got so many years from it but I can't really get over the popups now.

That said all my mates have a swag, so despite the popups being quicker, lighter ect. Right now I've got a hammock I want to use, but everytime I try to I end up falling back on my cheap $30 simple tent lol that's totally falling apart

            • +1

@lancesta: Mate I get it, I see the instant ups in the field and in the shops and am always curious and on the verge of going for it - and would be happy to downsize that little bit too - but then I remember it's another thing taking up space in the garage and another perfectly good item deprecated for no essential reason. Gotta control myself.

              • +1

@afoveht: Yeah 100%, the only reason my rents got one is because the one they had totally died. That's after taping poles and stuff, repairing leaks and all that but it pretty much just ripped. For a 13-15 year old tent (probably once maybe twice yearly 4 days camping) we're happy.

But I completely agree, I still use my cheap $30 one even though it's starting to age, I've probably even used it more than the family one, it still works. Seems totally wasteful to get another one. I'll use it until it completely dies.

But because they tend to survive such a long time if I do get another one I'm gonna put a lot of thought into it.

  • How heavy is it?

    • On the box it says is 24.68kg

      • Its really heavy. I was really surprised how heavy it was.

      • That's 5kg per person to carry on an overnight hike.

        • +1

Well it's not really a hiking tent. Not to be pointing out the obvious, in scouts me and my brother took a double burner stove with a proper gas bottle. Cooked like a boss on it and everyone ended up using ours but it was a lot of weight to carry.

          • @lancesta: If it fit 25 people, it would be less than 1 kilo pp.

Bank won't approve it with current interest rates

Underrated. Think It'd be a stretch for me but assuming this is a house and land package I might be able to make it after my bonus next year
