No, as I recall from @WookieMonster. But I could be wrong.

    • I got differing answers so I wasn't sure. Some said that it worked but other says it hasn't

    It's complicated.

I have not heard any reports of Woolworths restricting the redemption of ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift cards in their stores. The latest reports I have seen have been:

    • Someone said a few days ago they were able to purchase one of the gift cards in the current instore gift card deal.

    • Someone said in early August they were able to purchase an Activ Visa gift card (which was a little surprising to me).

    • Someone said in late June they were able to purchase an Ultimate gift card.

There is a chance that Woolworths has started enforcing restrictions in the last few days, but it is an unknown until someone tries it out.

Having said that, Blackhawk Network is known to apply restrictions on the redemption of Blackhawk Network gift cards (including ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift cards) at Coles and Woolworths and ALDI (and presumably other merchants using MCC 5411), and I talk about it in more detail here. My understanding is that these restrictions are still enforced by Blackhawk Network.

    • Thanks for the response? I might buy the supermarket giftcard to try it out? Would I still get the 20x bonus points on the gift cards?

      • Yes, you will still earn 20x bonus points.

  • Can ShopBack Supermarket Giftcards Be Used to Purchase Giftcards at Woolworths?

Generally gift cards can't buy giftcards….. But YMMV, so be warned if might not go to plan.

  • I have used the ShopBack Supermarket Giftcards to purchase the Coles Mastercard GCs and just used the Special GC to purchase a gc from the Gift Card Exchange. You just have to try.

    • That's Coles, Woolworths have stricter systems on the purchase of gift cards and implemented them earlier.

      • I just tried and it worked for me both at the automatic checkout and register. It works like a debit card not a gift card

  • Great to know.

FYI I just bought a Restaurant Choice gift card in the current 20x EDR promotion with one of these and it worked.

  • related, but different, does the ShopBack Supermarket giftcard work at Aldi?

  • Yes.

  • Can you use it to purchase Woolworth Egift Card online?

    • @wildstone No because the MCC does not match (not supermarket) and would be declined

      • Thanks! So the MCC is different to when you pay at the supermarket store?

        • Yes. I tried to buy the Woolies egift card online (via Woolies portal) with a similar card, The Grocery Gift Card and it was declined

          • @trixieb: Would you know what the MCC is for buying the egift card?

            • @wildstone: Will have to ask the expert @WookieMonster for you.
              Thanks WookieMonster

@wildstone: The last time I checked on 14 February, the MCC was reported to be 5399 (Miscellaneous General Merchandise Stores).

Even back when the Woolworths Group gift card portal used MCC 5411 (Grocery Stores, Supermarkets), all Activ Visa gift cards (including the ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card) were blocked as payment methods, because they were failing the security checks Woolworths Group were (and are still) using for Visa cards. A workaround for Activ Visa gift cards is to link them to PayPal and then use PayPal at checkout, except I do not think it is even possible to link a ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card to PayPal.

@trixieb, if you want to keep track of MCCs for merchants that I and others find out about, feel free to look at the dedicated wiki page.

  • Don’t think so, would be great if you could.

    • Thanks, too bad :(
