Best Bang for Your Money Online Mattress in a Box

We're looking at upgrading our old and worn IKEA mattress.

Our budget will only allow for some of the cheaper mattresses in a box from eBay etc (think ZZZ Atelier or Giselle bedding) rather than Duck or Koala mattress.

Must haves:

King size
Side support so it doesn't sag and you end up rolling out of the bed
Able to take side sleepers one of them being 100kg

Nice to have:

If it could be bought in 2x2m long singles (just do much easier to move around)

Thanks

    Suggested IKEA with Mattress Topper

Pretty good value for money with IKEA mattresses so stick to it. Decide on spring or foam and firmness levels for your preference.

Instead of spending more on a mattress, invest in a nice topper. That'll make far more of a real difference for comfort.

    • Agree with the topper.

      • Never paid much attention to toppers, of they're able to contour better, that's a big win for side sleepers

    • IKEA foam mattresses are a good value for money.

  • Does it have to be mattress in a box? Could it be any sort of delivered mattress?

    • Yeah, it doesn't matter really, I just didn't consider any other options

    Suggested Sleep Republic

Sleep Republic - Got a king and it exceeded all my expectations. Was a lot better than it's IKEA equivalent for me.
Do you have a more specific $ budget?

    • Certainly not that much.

      $1600 for a long @sleep republic.

      I'm on the ~$500 range.

I've spent way more on mattresses previously and found them not to be much better, so my budget is really by choice. Although I respect other people's opinion on spending more

    King size

Make sure you have a frame that can support your weight. There are some dodgy king frames (I'm looking at you, Ikea) out there that don't have a centre support beam and you'll notice on mattresses their warranty is void if it's not there. So you can actually void your mattress warranty (SleepingDuck is notorious for this) if you use a Queen/King Ikea frame!

If it could be bought in 2x2m long singles (just do much easier to move around)

You mean 2x King Singles? Gross. I've slept on a bed in a hotel that was "A King Bed" but was two king singles, the middle of the bed sagged and was really annoying because it was the edge of both beds.

TBH I know you said your budget doesn't allow for it, but sleeping is one of the most important things in your life. Don't cheap out on it.

    • Strange, I've had Malm beds from IKEA and they all had a centre study metal beam for support

      • Are they Queen/King?

The Ikea Idanas Queen & King for example, doesn't have a centre support beam that touches the ground.

If you go to the store they are wobbly as all hell and it's the #1 complaint from people.

        • No idea about those, the Malm single and Queen both have a centre support beam, they're one of their cheapest beds. If assembled correctly, they're not wobbly at all.

I've put these together many times, kind of an expert and can do them with my eyes closed by now, haha

          • @elcheapoinoz: We're talking about two different things here.

All beds above single I believe have a centre support beam that runs across the centre of the bed and rests on the "top" of the bed and the "bottom" of the bed to provide support for the slats and the mattress.

That's fine. The Idanas has those too. You can't have a Queen/King bed without one (the mattress would just 'flop' into the middle).

What I'm talking about is a centre support leg that touches the ground in addition to the 4 on the corners. Looking at the Malm online, it doesn't have this either. If you were to purchase a sleeping duck mattress, the warranty would be void with that bed frame too I believe.

  • I would recommend a sprint mattress, latex or foam will likely be too hot for the 100kg person.

    • My previous mattress was latex, good brand, was $1k+ as far as I remember. Didn't find it hot, but I found it uncomfortable

    2x2m long singles

It is called King Singles. It is an option because some apartments cant easily transport the King bed frame up the elevator or stairs. So they create 2 singles to make a King.

    • My previous latex was a single unit King size mattress that weighted a sh!t ton, but if you opened it up the latex was split in 4 2 sections per side. Made it possible to move in a car by rolling them up, otherwise it would have been impossible

+1 to Sleep Republic. Best mattress I've owned. Not mega cheap, but great quality and won't be disappointed. Besides that, I've got one of the kogan 32cm (for memory) mattresses which is really good too.
