Just past their 'best before' date, but still tasting fine.

possibly fine tasting. I've had plenty of cans that are only a few months after their best before and have been awful. Hopefully you offer some form of refund for off beer.

    • +1

Yeah what styles? Anything hop forward will degrade quickly.

      • +4

Dark beers are fine past BB date.

    • I bet they only tasted off after you discovered the BBD.

Craft beer has less of a flavour after their 6mths (but still taste fine) , but your commercial beer will be dine for months or years afterwards, unless you store it in the sun/heat.

Typically ales stand out like a sore thumb once they're bad, at least from experience. The "hoppyness" goes from floral to more fermented/acidic.

  • Ordered a case so hope these are ok 👍

  • +13

While they might be more expensive full price, $58 still seems expensive for beer that's on the edge

    • +4

At this price there'd be about $50 worth of beer excise and GST on it. Any lower and they'd probably be better off binning it than selling it.

    [Past Best Before]

    no thanks…

  • +2

    Seems expensive for old beer.

Like most Belgian beers, particularly those that are dark and high strength, a bit of age could actually improve the beer. In fact, you'd never want this style super fresh. Biggest concern is oxidation in the can, but this is pretty well mitigated with commercial canning equipment.

Tldr, don't let the best before put you off.

    • Confused. So best before is not best before?

      • +6

I'm assuming they applied the same blanket time period they apply to all beers, which isn't style specific.

Beer is full of volatile compounds and Belgian beers at high ABV actually benefit from age to take the edge off of some of the high ABV fermentation characteristics.

Hop forward beers like IPAs are generally best drank ASAP before the hop compounds degrade.

      • +6

Regulations require be to have a 12 month best before date.

Some beers, usually stouts and dark ales, actually mature over time and improve in flavour.

Things like IPAs, pale ales, etc are better fresh.

BBD is a made up date,. especially in Australia. Local craft beer is generally 6mths, commerical beer 9mths. It's not used by.

Considering the high ABV, you would expect this to be even better after 2yrs, and 5yrs when stored

    • +4

Reminds me of coopers best extra Stout that actually has a 'best after' date haha.

      • +1

Particularly impactful due to their bottle conditioning! Great Winter beer.

  • +1

There’s no mention of when the BBD was, either posted here or on the website. Whilst OzB gets the heads-up, those who might randomly land on the page has no warning of receiving beer with an unknown date in the past.

‘Just’ could mean August or April or June 2022?

Only the OP knows the definition of ‘just’ in this case.

    Some pretty naive comments.

    • +1

Including yours. Care to sharpen it up a little?

      • +1

My comments aren't naive, chief. There is absolutely nothing wrong with dark beer post BB date.

  • +6

I’d take a chance at $60ish, but the $15 delivery kills the deal for me.

  • Ordered a case and looking forward to a this tasty drop, mmmm.

    58 bucks for expired shit….Yea….No

shouldnt cost more then 20 bucks

    • +2

Dude, at least read the thread before you comment.

It's already been explained in detail why this isn't expired.

  • +3

would've taken the punt if it had free delivery, $15 shipping kills it

  • For all the bickering it doesn't matter - it's out of stock. Hopefully those who got it enjoy it!
