[VIC] Free Penfolds Grange Tasting @ Costco Moorabbin (Membership Required)

140

This popped up as a sponsored Facebook post for me. Nothing usual about free samples at Costco, but I thought free Grange was worth a post given that you don't see that every day. I wonder how Grange pairs with Costco pizza and hotdog.

Can I taste a whole bottle?

    • Sure, just change your clothes up from time to time and bring some disguises.

      • Hmm, considering this wine sells for nearly $1k per bottle, even a 60mL tasting is equivalent to $80!

        • the sample sizes are typically 30ml …. for fathers day got to taste the Grange also known as Bin95, and 707at a promo … it's good to try as then you appreciate everyday wines when you get a good one. the 2018 grange was rated 100 points so sold quick, the 2019 is 98 points so moving slower. The 2021 Bin389 ($83) is my favourite it's a blend of shiraz and you get the best of both varieties …. if you were rich it's like blending 707 and Grange. On a world scale Grange is actually cheap, Romanee Conti burgundy / pinot costs $4000+ for current releases

        • But the resale is about $500 per bottle if you are lucky - I know - I am looking to sell 8 from the 90's decade.

          • @Sainter Dad: Lucky? I’ll happily give you $500 for one of your 90s granges provided you stored it correctly. Maybe more depending on which year. Feel free to DM me if interested.

Don't forget it's for later today. I'm still filling the bottles but it's hard holding the Coolibah bladders.

some burglars used to check household wealth by bottles thrown out … I know when I got robbed they only took 6 of the best and left the rest, if selling grange via gumtree don't give them your address, luckily cash convertors don't have a liquor license.

      • Sorry to hear your story, hope you've recovered from the violation.

Great info. I've moved away from hard mail (and having a secured mailbox) because of risk of identity fraud crimes. I'm not sure how to protect against someone going through my refuse on garbage day… maybe trying to put packaging of expensive items on the bottom of bins 🤷‍♂️

Re: gumtree. I've stopped giving out residential addresses and meeting at home - definitely good practice to meet in a public place preferably with CCTV (buyers understand and are unfazed, in fact I'm certain female buyers appreciate it). I use a local RSL-type eatery/gaming establishment, it's a convenient 2min drive from my place (and I park away from the venue and drive to/fro in a circuit).

Costco Epping also has one in the car park but it's Habibi Moonshine.

    • Vintage 2023? Heard Moey gave it 100 points!

Thanks OP got some. Just as I remember from 20+ years ago last time I had some, very much overrated. I enjoyed the Bin 2 I had last night every bit as much for $28 from Amazon last weekend. I'm sure the Grey Label I picked up from Costco today at $26 (excellent price) will be every bit as good also. Still 2 tastings 2018 & 2019 of a $900 bottle of wine was well worth renewing the membership for:-)

    • You're welcome, though you didn't need to renew the membership, you could have snuck in through the exit. Just look like you are going to the membership services desk and then peel off at the last second before walking through the checkout and you're in.

Alternatively, just flash your wallet as you go in, I've never been pulled up for not showing my actual Costco card at the entrance.

      How busy was it?

      • They did alright from me $65 to renew and $500 for various other crap LOL It was busy, and they run out before 2PM. I went back at 1:45 hoping for another taste and they were packing up.

I was tempted to ask people there if the were Oz Bargainers LOL.
