Changing ISPs from Telstra to Tangerine

I'm currently paying $110/mth 100/20 with Telstra for FTTC, I just saw a deal posted for Tangerine FTTP for half that price. Can I use my Telstra gen 2 smart modem when I switch or could someone recommend which one of the ones they bundle. Cheers for the help I'm not very tech savvy

Yes, it will work but you may need Tangerine tech support to talk you through setting it up, I doubt it will be simply plug and play.

Also Tangerine will probably not be as reliable as your current connection, but each to their own, I also chase cheap internet deals and having the best ISP is not that important to me.

    • Keep in mind, it is not on the list of supported BYO modems listed here
      https://www.tangerinetelecom.com.au/storage/Modem%20Guides/B…

And they do say "We ask that you are comfortable configuring the device yourself as our team can’t guarantee support on
      all devices."

      • I had a BYO device that wasn’t on the supported list, but they provided me with support and it worked perfectly from then.

I only had to contact them a couple of times with issues (which were always nbns fault, not theirs) and they were always quick and helpful.

I've been with Tangerine, moved from Telstra to Aussie then to Tangerine over the last few years.
been most reliable so far. Aussie had the most drop outs and unexplained speed throttles. each to their own though

      • Agree, Tangerine are great. Had them for 3 years now.

I currently use a Telstra Smart Modem with Tangerine, and setup was simple. I have used them for the last 3 years over 3 properties and never had a problem.

    • Same, just switched over to Tangerine with Telstra smart modem, had to key in credentials as part of PPPoE setup and that's it.

  • Thanks for the response, will give it a go with the current modem :)

The modem/router will be fine, you'll need to add a PPPoE Username and Password (pretty sure Tangerine use PPPoE Authentication), but aside from that, setup will be same as your current one.

Tangerine on the other hand…. they're uber cheap for a reason.
Fine if your switchover has no issues, but awful if there's even the slightest hiccup.

Leaptel offer a really good 12 month (not just 6 month) Fibre upgrade plan and have top notch Customer Service should you run into any difficulties.
Over 12 months, Leaptel is an identical price to Tangerine's if you stayed with them for the additional 6 months following promo..

    • Plus the Telstra smart modem connects to Leaptel's network automatically. Nothing needs to be changed.
