  • read some reviews about this lens and it seems to be a good lens
mind explaining what this lens can do? I just started playing DSLR and have a 600D

For a first prime lens it's not a bad choice. Good center sharpness, although the corners aren't as sharp. But, at f/1.4 it's a fast lens so it's excellent for low light shots and even night shots. There might be some distortion in the photographs, but depending on what you're shooting, it wont be noticeable, and even then can be fixed in post.

For anyone looking at Pentax/Sony mount, bear in mind the lens will be non-HSM.

IMHO its the best value for money prime (non-zoom) lens for your 600D at the moment. Great for low light, indoors, shallow DOF and portrait photos, it seems to stay on mine 90% of the time now. Good thing is you don't need to pay the 'canon' price tag and the glass and build quality is up there with lenses that cost 2 or 3 times more than it. As said above, sharpness is not as good as you start to move away from the centre but i don't seem to find this very noticeable in most situations

    • If you've just started using a dslr I would start with a 50 mm or 80 mm prime lens as they are a bit more universal in my opinion…

30mm is the 50m equivalent on a 600D however and much more practical indoors

        • 30mm on crop body is about what you see. 50mm on crop is more zoomed in.

  • does this one have auto focus motor inside of the lense? for like likes of nikon 3000 3100, 500, 5100 etc

    • +2

Yes it does - that's what HSM is in Sigma-speak.

      • ahh, thanks. i only know it as AF-S on nikon lenses

With Sigma lens, be sure to buy local stock (price match with CRK), many people have focusing issues with this.

  • I seem to ask this for every lens on OZB but… this lens vs Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD AF IF? For use on my first DSLR (60D) for all round use in Vanuatu.

    • I have 17-50 non VC. I don't have 30mm f1.4 yet but I don't think I'll be using it much since I don't like changing lens. and for low light shot I usually use my 580EXII.
I would suggest 17-50 because you can still shoot landscape and portrait with this lens and later on you buy Sigma 30mm.
FYI I have 60D as well.

and before I pulled a trigger on Tamron 17-50mm non VC, I read a lot of reviews, VC version isn't as sharp as non VC.

        Thanks Nick!

I've read the reviews on the Tamron 17-50mm and because I'm going to use it for quite a bit of video I think the VC is the best compromise for me

        • +1

ohh for video. Use manual zoom or just don't use them at all. Focus motor is LOUD!. Have you considered Canon 40mm Pancake? it's very quiet but I think the STM thing only works for 650D atm.

Don't know why you're getting negged for your comment… Would these people care to explain their negs?

        • I think I'd like the neg/pos vote to be open to public. But then I think nah, what a little schoolyard bitch-fest OzB would become.. what with people knowing specifically and resentment and all. Better to let the anonymous have their li'l five-per-day negative key-stroke win - that can be swamped by the masses anyway. ;)

I bought myself a Tamron 17-50 VC a couple of weeks ago and I am extremely happy with it. Just like you, I chose the VC version for use with video and it does a great job. Got it for about AU $370 delivered from amazon spain, however the price has recently gone up. Keep an eye on the european amazon prices, as they can drop below the price of your regular hong kong grey importers.

    • I have the Tammy 17-50 and its a cracker! Can send you samples if required.

  • FWIW, back when I was looking for a 30mmish lens, between the Nikon 35 1.8 and this Sigma 30 1.4, the only downside I could find with the Sigma was that there was a fair bit of feedback regarding the quality control of the lenses themselves - a fair bit of them tended to have front focusing issues, so your getting a good working lens would be up to the luck of the draw.

  • As someone mentioned… there is a lot of "talk" of focusing issues for this lens.. checkout whirpool forumn for details. I am keen on this lens but you can get it local for about $400 and CRKenney still price match grey importers but you get a two year local warranty so you may be able to get it for this price. Many people have had dud copies and had them replaced, others just go back for adjustments.

  • I have tamron 1750 non vc, sigma 30 1.4, 70200 f4. And 90% my portraits were used sigma 30 1.4, highly recommend. I did a test with canon 50mm 1.4, much sharper center and better build.
