The best coffee grinder money can buy, if you only have $69.

This is by far the cheapest decent burr coffee grinder. Some reviews state that it can't grind fine enough for espresso, however mine has no trouble achieving a very fine grind. Sunbeam customer support can send you a shim kit which allows you to tweak the grind even finer. Happy with my results with this and a Bambino Plus as a mainly long black / espresso drinker, or with a coarse grind for cold brew.

    Akshu…

    …if you only have $69.

    Well played

    69 .. nice

I've had a 2nd hand one of these for about 6 months, works great!

It’s good for the money, the only gripe is:
    * the grinds may get stuck sometimes (bang it)
    * it can spread a bit on the bench (most do this - a 3d print will help).

Other than that it gives a great grind without breaking bank

    • How much are you talking re: stuck grinds?

I only ask because even grinders that are 10x more expensive have some retention. For example the niche zero still retains about 0.1-0.3g unless you have some bellows

      • Every 2-3 fills you might need to bang it as some of it piles up in the chute and blocks it. It’s not really a big deal for the price

    • Have you tried spritzing the coffee beans with a small bit of water before putting them into the grinder? This reduces the static and often helps

      • +1

Never did, I’ve switched to the bigger sunbeam machine which has a built in grinder and it’s been awesome

      • Problem is you're not meant to run these grinders without any beans so you risk damaging it if you are only putting enough beans in for one shot.

        • Really? I've worked at places that use these while single dosing and never had an issues

  • I got one and have had nothing but pain trying to get a decent espresso grind out of this. :-(

More for courser grind style methods

Contact Sunbeam and they might send you a shim otherwise you can buy shims online for finer grinding.

    • +1

Also started with one of these years ago. Definatley need to shim them for espresso.

    • +1

i had this issue and bought a washer from bunnings to lift the burr closer and now works great!

      • What washer did you get?

        • +1

0.25mm washer. Some people need multiple.

    • +1

What machine and beans are you using?

      • Use a Grimac Mia with Lime Blue Colombian SO Cauca beans. The last time I tried it on the finest grind setting that would work on the grinder, the water almost came out the portafilter like there was no coffee there.

The big issue is that on the finer setting, the grinder just got clogged. Looks like the finest setting is probably fine for the machine though.

Interesting. That's a quality machine that should probably be paired with a quality grinder. I love my Baratza 270, but my god it's loud. If you're still using this sunbeam grinder, you probably need the shim to grind finer (assuming you can't put more grind into the group head). But that could be an issue if you said it already clogs up

          • @Oldmate88: Yeah. I got the machine and grinder free from a mate. The machine needed some minor repairs but it all fine now. Been looking for a new grinder. We have two different Fiorenzato grinders at church. A full commericial for our main bean and a smaller one for decaf. I enjoyed both of them. Easy to use and consistent enough.

One thing I am going to test on the weekend is lightly spraying the beans with water to hopefully reduce the static issues that are potentially clogging the machine.

I will have a look at the Baratza 270. Looks like it is in my price range. Although the loudness might be a downside. Need to make the set-up as easy as possible for my wife which means any grinder needs to have a timed setting. Another weakness of this Sunbeam model.

@slashor: 3rd party bellows-top for the hopper can mitigate clogging as well

            • +1

@slashor: Check out the Eureka Mignon Silenzio. Similar price range, quality machine and a focus on being reasonably quiet.

    I only have $68

    • That will buy you 45.33333333 small coffees at 7-11.

    • Take my snarky upvote.

    • Here's a dollar mate. $1.00

  • Looks like same sale price at big w also

  • Thanks bought for decaf beans

  • I need a coffee machine first. Any cheap coffee machines that would do the job?

    • +2

      Try a Nanopresso.

They are very good and portable.

You can use that with the grinder and then get another machine later if you want.

    • Figure out if you want espresso or filter cofffe.

For espresso, for $600 you get the gaggia classic pro which is just outstanding, but it's a manual espresso machine (which you typically get with a grinder). I'm not sure what a good cheaper espresso machine is.

If you like filters, then you're up for a lot more choice: French press, moka pot(the Italian thing), chemex, V60, etc. Personally I have a chemex and love it, but I'd recommend the clever brewer (about $40)

      • Thanks mate. Do you have a link for the clever brewer?

    • If you drink milk-based coffee the Sunbeam EM7000/71000 is a great machine. I've had mine for ages and it's highly underrated. The Breville Bambino series is also well-reviewed.

  • +1

You don’t even need the shim kit. Just tighten down the screws.

    • Screws?! Whereabouts?

I think I've had the opposite experience to others, in the years I've owned this. I can't seem to get a coarse grind. Can get it powdery fine, but never very coarse at all.

      • I don’t have mine anymore but I think it’s four screws under the hopper.

  • Thanks OP … been using this model for a few years.

    Great to have a backup.

  • Showing as $87.20 for me

  • +1

    $87.20 now.

  • 87.20$ never tell me the odds!

  • Had this for a very long time, was fantastic but you do need to regularly clean it thoroughly. Replaced with a Specialita which was much more expensive than this, so at this price you can't go wrong.

  • +3

BigW are now listing it for $69 online but scans at full price. I just picked one up and they adjusted the price at the register.
    Thanks Op!

Can also stack with this deal if you need to buy other stuff totalling over $150

    • Thanks, got one.

Just noticed if buying from Big W through Woolies, it's $69 with free shipping.

      • Thanks, I took advantage of this :). I also bought used the offer for '5% bonus gift card value' going at the moment. So overall cost was $65.71 delivered.

    • Haven't read them, but if it helps, its better than the grinder that comes built in with the Breville Barista Express

  • @Tycn I also have the sunbeam emo440 and bambino plus combo but find that the bambino doesn't have enough pressure to push through a fine and well compacted grind. Would be interested to know yr grind, machine settings ( shot timings, single or double etc) . Maybe my bambino needs to be repaired ..

    • +1

Nah you just need to go a little less fine, smaller dose, lower tamp pressure, just one of those or a combination of all three. That's part of dialling in your grind - it will change whenever you try different beans, or even as your beans age.

    • I think it's like Tunblor said, figuring out the three variables until you find the right balance. I use grind size 5-7, aim for around 18g of grounds in a bottomless portafilter and usually get around 40ml of espresso in 20 seconds, but I can't be bothered with the weighing/timing and normally just eyeball it with decent results.

  • I've had one for 10 years and it's still cracking the beans super fine … So fine the machine can choke due to pressure… Perfect!!!!

I did however accidentally break the preventer that stops the grinder being over tightened :D

  • Back in stock @ $69.

  • How does this compared to Breville BCG450? It came with my Breville espresso machine. The problem is it doesn't grind fine enough. Would it be worthwhile upgrading to the Sunbeam EM0440?
